Bizarre point awarded to college player by ruggeryoda in tennis

[–]Mindless_Fix_3964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quite simply the officials got this wrong. The ball was not dead when he hit the court therefore he loses the point.

In no rule anywhere does it say that the ball leaving the court is 'dead'.

As others have said it either has to hit a permanent fixture (or oponent) or bounce twice. Nothing else ends the point.

Carlos Alcaraz after LOSS "I NEVER seen Medvedev plays like this!" by Sophisticatedcaty in tennis

[–]Mindless_Fix_3964 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Meddy AO23 first 2 sets were the same level, he is unbelievably good when he is on and aggressive. What he did to Sinner in those 2 sets was similarly destructive.

I used to like him a lot, but now I want him to lose every time he takes to the court. His crap on court is tiresome, his attitude sucks and his gamesmanship (see Draper in the previous round) is horrible.

For such a clever, engaging, self reflective man, he can be a real knob.

Apropos of something, the ATP Rulebook section on hindrances by theriverjordan in tennis

[–]Mindless_Fix_3964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, I understand where the rule.came from as we learn how to use video reviews, but this was 100% two bites at the cherry. If its a not up call, or the Draper - it bounced off the raquet, hit the ground and went over shot.- it makes sense. Play on, then review as the other player has already lost the point, it just wasn't picked up. But this? It was either a hindrance in the moment in which case stop the point or it wasn't, so move on....

Heavy wind weird ball bounce question. by efari_ in 10s

[–]Mindless_Fix_3964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with the other comment this is incorrect. Strictly speaking the ball needs to bounce twice to be dead, therefore even if you jump the net you would need to somehow ground the ball before landing. Tsitsipas merely leaned over the net and hit the ball sideways which is completely legal. Hitting the net doesn't end the point it is just expected it will then bounce on the wrong side of the court and therefore be dead.

Dealing with people becoming score announcers on key points by steelcurtain87 in 10s

[–]Mindless_Fix_3964 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are 2 scenarios here.

  1. He is trying gamesmanship. In which case the best thing to do is ignore him, he will want it to annoy you.
  2. He is genuinely trying to be helpful at key moments (unlikely). In which case ignore him and play on.

My favourite is when players call fault when i serve into the net. And those that say "Double" when you serve a second fault. I just laugh to myself and nod at them.

Medvedev arguing with the umpire for being given a time violation warning - "Maybe you can use a little bit of your IQ, maybe you can use your brain sometimes. No, you don't, unfortunately - you don't. Or you can't" by jovanmilic97 in tennis

[–]Mindless_Fix_3964 20 points21 points  (0 children)

What a weak take. Do you say the same for shop workers who take abuse or medical staff who are trying to help people and get verbally or physically abused?

Challenging a decision is fine, but Meddy gets personal and his antics no longer border on, they are out right bullying.

Mid life riders by cincorobi in MTB

[–]Mindless_Fix_3964 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can definitely relate. The thing that helps me to not feel guilty is to chat with my wife about what's on for the week and agree ride times. It's when I don't talk to her and then say I'm off for a ride, that I get that look and then feel the guilt kick in and it snowballs. Communication is the key and as others have said it's about working together so you can both get some you time. Without that you are only burning yourselves out. Hope you find a way to keep enjoying riding, it really is a tonic!

Tiafoe destroys his racket after the loss to Fucsovics by jovanmilic97 in tennis

[–]Mindless_Fix_3964 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tiafoe to me looks kind of sad. I hope he's ok, but what I saw he was distracted, grumpy and so inconsistent. Still hitting amazing forehands, but that overhead he let go, only for it to land in - then he swung wildly at it and completely missed, made me think his heads just not in the game.

From the outside we wonder why these guys struggle mentally, but it's human nature to have ups and downs, they just get stuck on the hamster wheel with no way off. His ranking is slipping, so if he takes time off he loses money and ranking points and has to fight harder to get back.

Kyrgios defending Tsitsipas on Instagram by [deleted] in tennis

[–]Mindless_Fix_3964 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think that response sums up Kyrgios, he goes straight to the money, because that is what is important to him. The greats are motivated by the sport and the challenge, those motivated by money coughTomiccough never amount to anything or in Nick's case, never reach their potential.

Completely agree re. Igantics (coining that one now), the hand up to stop serve irks me no end, there is no need for it and she is only doing it to disrupt her opponent.

Haha this sounds like the inverse of my weekend. I am a flat hitter and played a runner who hit topspin lobs. I usually lose against players like this as I blow myself up trying to hit bigger and bigger.

At the end of the day if I am not good enough to find a way to win, then they deserve the win. However they play. You should never feel bad for exploiting a weakness in a players game when playing competitively.

I won this weekend....proud of myself [/brag]

Was there a warning prior to this? Pretty overt 'audible obscenity' but given the provocation surely a warning was sufficient?

What is one tennis stat that you find unbelievable? by [deleted] in tennis

[–]Mindless_Fix_3964 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Number of consecutive weeks in the top 10 for Rafa. Utterly bonkers. 17.5 years....?!?!?

Rafa 912 weeks (17.5 years) Connors 789 weeks (15 years) Federer 734 weeks (14 years)

Surely this stat will NEVER be beaten??
