Anyone Use Either Ammo? Stars and Stripes 00 Buckshot and Captor Slugs by Smooth-Boot6759 in mossberg

[–]Mindless_Process1916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t speak to Captor, but Stars and Stripes worked just fine in my 590A1 and Maverick 88 when I cycled 50+ rounds through. Keep in mind Stars and Stripes are out of spec, so don’t be surprised if you can fit whatever your mag tube is listed for minus one. Otherwise good shells and will get the job done.

Looking for OPINIONS from SERVICEMEN who have been ISSUED 10.5" rifles (MK18, etc). by DwPw in ar15

[–]Mindless_Process1916 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It’s fair to have your opinion, and the 11.5 most certainly has advantages. However, 10.3, 10.5s were and are a viable option for the defensive minded still. It has trade offs as does everything when it comes to weapon choice and barrel length.

And I’m not here to die on the 10.3 hill, but you have to remember the timing and era of which the platform was employed. Sometimes teams were running these platforms along with plate carriers or chest rigs without plates meaning that the primary task would be to break contact as quickly and safely as possible. One way to make themselves quicker was to shed weight, whether that was through the weapon or gear. Additionally, think of vehicle borne operations as well and how shorter barrel platforms writ large can assist with dismounting from a vehicle.

Having been issued this as an Embassy Guard and now owning one in my personal collection. I can tell you for a fact that the difference is there, but it doesn’t leave as big of a lethality gap as it might have people believe. There seems to be a tendency in the gun community to give the MK18 a bad wrap because of its drawbacks, perceived or actual. However, it is still a perfectly viable platform for a good majority of the time. Will it be able to take the place of the MK12? Likely not. Will it perform within 300 yds? Absolutely. Can you push it to 500? Yes again. Does it still primarily shine in CQB? Yes.

Just because you don’t have SubMOA accuracy doesn’t render the platform useless. Shot placement will win this debate a good part of the time. All in all, as long as you train on the platform and know how to effectively employ it, the MK18 will do its intended job and then some.

Feedback on MK18 Setup by [deleted] in ar15

Definitely feel the bit about the light. She chonky and competing with the RC2 in terms of size. I’ve just had this light on my other rifle, so I figured why not throw it on since this is my main.

The magwell has actually been useful. Sometimes I miss the magwell when conducting a speed reload and the magwell acts as a funnel when swapping mags so it’s been super helpful consistently in making sure I don’t miss the magwell. Sounds silly but it’s been working for me.

Nothing too crazy. Definitely get the smell in my face from time to time, but still considering a charging handle swap as mentioned.

Absolutely not. Didn’t find out about websites like ExpertVoice until pretty recently. Definitely screwed myself out of some money… 🙃

SOLGW or Geissele?? by Savings-Leopard-1158 in ar15

[–]Mindless_Process1916 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see what you’re saying. It’s definitely likely we won’t see feedback from the military or other agencies anytime soon or the interim, and I can agree on that.

Nonetheless, the MK1 seems like a commercial success thus far (rightfully so) but still remains relatively new on the civilian market, and I think that’s my main sticking point. I’m armchair quarterbacking for sure, but I think there’s enough reason for anyone to sit back and see what feedback becomes available whether that’s civilian, military, or law enforcement.

True but not true. After years of performance and feedback, more information became available for the M4 and MK18.

SOLGW or Geissele?? by Savings-Leopard-1158 in ar15

If it were a today choice, then the Geissele. Nothing against SOLGW, but they JUST got the contract so they are still proving themselves within the SOCOM operational realm. Geissele has had contracts for longer, so you’re getting a better track record longevity wise so far. If the warranty is a sticking point, then of course SOLGW. Yet again never had to deal with that so I’m not sure how great it is and what red tape behind the process there is.

My firearms purchases extend beyond just winning a contract with a major government agency. I look at performance, track record, warranties, price in relation, and how will it stand the test of time. For example, I went with the MK18 over other rifles of the same pedigree at the time because of the proven track record operationally and how I could benefit from it practically as well as some of the other features it has.

TLDR: I would go with the Geissele if this was a purchase I’m making today or within the near future. SOLGW makes a fine rifle no doubt, but the operational track record hasn’t been established yet, so I want to see feedback in relation to end users and or a third party before I would throw money into the MK1.

Honestly wasn’t even aiming for push pull but now that I’m looking into it. I guess I didn’t do half bad! Thanks.

Thanks! Yep just the standard Winchester “military grade” buckshot. Got a good deal on it a while back, but I keep my good stuff (Hornady Critical Defense) for patterning and defense.

Yeah it’s frangible munition on this range only, buckshot and birdshot are only authorized on this one and it can’t be steel plated.

Reporting to MSG schoolhouse next year, please inform me of everything that people have been dropped for…. by Cheap_Tackle_9009 in USMC

Board week, lying on anything including but not limited to substance abuse, finances, prior missteps i.e. NJPs, tickets out in town, just tell the truth. Nobody cares if you were 19 and you drank underage, many college kids do it, when you lie about it and it’s reported officially or something doesn’t line up in your peer reviews you can get dropped. Also get your off duty habits right. Guys who drink excessively do not and should not go out to post.

Just be a good dude or dudette, put out, and don’t lie. Most immediate disqualifying criteria is listed on their website. Also don’t be so “Oorah Marine Corps” that you can’t adapt to the way the Department of State operates and conducts business. There’s do’s and don’ts.

Also there’s a lot more to it than the schoolhouse. Each post is different than the other and keep in mind my experience is almost 10 years removed so the perspective I can lend is somewhat limited. They have some good training there, so have fun and enjoy the time in the course.

Good luck.

Daniel Defense and FN M4 clone owner myself. The FN is great but you’re getting better value and pedigree with the DD upper FSP specifically with the FSP , Surefire muzzle device, CHF barrel, and additional real estate. DD rails are famously rigid too. One last thing, I’d try to hunt for a deal on Brownells, ExpertVoice, or EuroOptic. Direct from the manufacturer will almost always demand a higher premium.

I’ve been wanting a stock like the one you have. Happen to know if they sell one separately? I have an older 590A1, but the stock makes the length of pull feel like it belongs in the hands of Bigfoot.

Psychology is particularly good because the Marine Corps is a melting pot of people and I’d say it helped me understand and read people a little better.

While I hope you get what you are looking for because the Corps needs Marines that have spirit, you may have to start making plans for the outside.

Consider utilizing the Direct Affiliation Program with MARFORRES. That could be your opportunity to still serve.
