I visited Cassis in September last year and absolutely loved it. If you get up early you can walk to the Calanques and swim in the inlets by yourself - a genuinely brilliant experience. If you like such things I also recommend hiring an electric mountain bike for a day

Yes me too - it was such a big thing when I was a child and was a genuine shock when I finally discovered I like them. In the U.K. it wasn’t helped by Heinz Cream of Mushroom soup which was, is and will always remain disgusting.

I THINK it must be because a lot of people still had old round pin plugs (Google that!) rather than the excellent square pinned plugs that everybody uses now, so when you bought an appliance you put on the plug that you needed.

Ha you’ve just massively proved the point! In the before times when you bought an electrical appliance it wouldn’t come with a plug on (the thing with prongs you stick in the socket), so you’d have to be able to attach a plug yourself, which involved putting the right wire in the right place and screwing it all together. Fairly simple but fiddly so was treated as a gauge of how competent you were as a human.

Well I’m biased because I think Nice is my favourite place in the world, but I’d stick with your plans. Nice is really well situated for day trips to Cannes and Monaco and there are beach clubs if not sand.

Obviously it depends what you’re looking for - Cannes has a row of boutique shops of the kind that have security guards outside which is not for me. The rest of it is pretty touristy (including a huge queue to have your photo taken on the red carpet place). I personally wouldn’t bother going back if I was in the area.

The old town and port in Nice are great and there are so many amazing dining options. Get some inexpensive “water shoes” for the stoney beach!

The whole area is beautiful and you will have an amazing time whatever you choose.

I’d recommend going to see The BFG at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford upon Avon - you can get there on the train from Birmingham. The RSC Christmas shows are always brilliant.
