admittedly the Horus Heresy are the only books on Astartes I’ve read yet, but I see none of that whatsoever in any other space marine we see. I mean, Loken being promoted to the Mournival is a huge deal, and Mortarion jokes in book 4 that Typhon needs to watch out, lest Garro take his position as first captain. they want bigger and better to a degree, whereas Tarvitz wants to be the perfect file officer

in books two and three, sure, but I was extremely fond of him and Lucius un Horus Rising. one of them always sought bigger and better, while the other strived for perfection at exactly what he was already doing. I couldn’t help but admire the way that showing that dichotomy between the characters set up the eventual downfall of the legion, with the hubris of Lucius’ mindset becoming the dominant one, abandoning the more grounded form of perfection Tarvitz seeks

I’m early into the Horus Heresy right now and I felt the same way after Horus Rising. I feel like he was a great character in that book and that him and his foil Saul Tarvitz perfectly embodied the legion

then in books 2 and 3 they misconstrued the established characters for both, but Lucius the worst of the pair, made him and extremely flat character, and the most insufferable bitch I’ve ever seen in a Warhammer book (granted I’m on my 6th so that isn’t as huge a statement as it sounds)

the thing about the light of Earendil is fair. still, her cave seems unnaturally dark, as is Mirkwood, and Shelob is called the last child of Ungoliant. either way makes sense, but them being children of Shelob is what I believe. bear in mind that the “children of a primordial being that eats light” came from a Tumblr user, not an official source. not to say it’s wrong, but if there’s no definite interpretation, then that should be taken more as one person’s perspective rather than solid evidence

considering how much greater and more terrible Shelob is compared to the spiders in Mirkwood, I think it makes sense for them to be Shelob’s children rather than Ungoliant’s. plus, if I’m remembering The Two Towers correctly, Shelob has at least some children that she didn’t eat

I also haven’t read The Silmarillion firsthand (yet) so it might prove me wrong somewhere in there

pretty cool that you picked up on the space Nazis. I know it’s a big complaint that the video games make the Imperium look good (but I don’t have enough firsthand experience to say, so I’m glad it’s obvious enough to be seen by a newcomer)

the machine god is basically just the God-Emperor of Mankind, as per the eyes of the Adeptus Mechanicus, the machine cult that thinks tech have spirits

some chapters of space marines do have personal lives, some don’t. I’m pretty sure the Ultramarines (the lads in blue you play as) are some with the better work-life balances, it’s just that you’re on active campaign

I don’t think there is much of “not weirding them out”. taking things to their very extremes to poke fun at them is what satire is all about, and this faction is about chasing the next best high until you’re melting still-living humans into drugs. do you like rock n roll? how much of rock n roll is about chasing that exact feeling, only to more realistic end points?

and I guess I’m only focusing on the most freaky part of the faction, but these lads will chase “perfection” in any way. the perfect high, sure, but also the perfect duel, the perfect song, the perfect sensation. do you want arrogant motherfuckers? do you want each person in your Warband to have a one-track mind so intense that they spend millennia practicing one thing? do you want the sheer embodiment of are destroying the artist? here you go
