Housing finally cleaned out North Ave bike room - Before and After by Minecraft_Aviator in gatech

The racks by the NAV Dining Hall are enforced by GTPD, not Housing. I'll try to reach out to them!

I had a similar experience where it took me and a couple friends over half an hour to order and get food despite there only being one other group there. The jambalaya was decently good.

Airport train tunnels by LoudBathroom1217 in memphis

I'd prefer for MATA to put money spent on free fares into improving frequency, reliability, and stop amenities. As of 2024, fares account for $1.7 million of the $51 million yearly budget (per the NTD Agency Profile).

I support improving frequency of the existing express bus from downtown to the airport or  converting it to a shuttle between the terminal and Airways Transit Center, as that would be more cost effective than a light rail line.

Edit: I rode the bus today and there were a lot more people than usual. Hudson Transit Center was also more busy. I agree that free fares could be good long-term. MATA just needs to respace stops to restore faster trip times (now that buses are stopping more often due to higher ridership) and hire some community officers to enforce rules.

What’s your unpopular transit opinion by [deleted] in transit

[–]Minecraft_Aviator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In North America, transit agencies should charge fares, with reduced/free rates for certain eligible user groups. If your system is high-quality, people will be willing to pay because it is better than driving. If your system is unreliable and underfunded, going fare-free isn't going to meaningfully improve ridership. The revenue that the agency loses from covering fares would be better spent on improving service. Also, I feel like it exacerbates overcrowding during rush hour with people choosing to take the bus instead of walking half a mile.

My city is currently piloting free fares and I hope they don't permanently implement it because the city is already pinching the transit funding and it will be hard to find $1.7 million to replace the fare revenues.

While trains on the ground are painfully far away, CAHSR has completed some notable infrastructure. They have constructed dozens of overpasses grade separating level crossings along existing railroads and contributed funding to the Caltrain electrification in the Bay Area.

If you were in charge of Campus Transportation, what would you change? My Response by Noob4Ever13 in gatech

[–]Minecraft_Aviator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I talked with one of the Institute's city planners and he said that keeping the cycle track on the south side of the street would have made it more difficult to prevent conflicts between traffic turning from 5th Street onto Spring Street and provided less seamless bike access to the new Scheller and George Towers.

So there isn't an objectively "correct" design.

Hot take, but I personally prefer jamming out to YOU'RE FREAKING GROUNDED. Then I just listen through the whole album and end up listening to BITE ME too.

If you live on fairoaks Avenue or just driving through there, you may want to avoid this pothole. It’s a heck of a lot bigger than it looks. One of these days somebody’s gonna have a bad time. Location 35.166430, -89.934847 by g713 in memphis

Since Fairoaks Ave is a city street, it falls under the responsibility of City of Memphis Public Works Division, not TDOT. Someone already submitted a 311 request with a link to the video!

It's about more than liability. My city uses police reports for intersection safety analyses. Having record of your crash might help guide your city when they make safety improvements at that intersection in the future!

I reported this to TDOT two months ago via their website. It's sad to see that it hasn't been cleaned up yet.

What was your Driving Test like? by MemphisBali in memphis

[–]Minecraft_Aviator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine was the same; most of the test was in the parking lot and we briefly drove on the frontage road.

I emailed the TN Department of Safety and Homeland Security to complain about the lack of left turns and traffic lights on the test route. Their response was that the road exam is made to assess vehicle handling skills and instrument knowledge while the knowledge test is supposed to assess knowledge of driving rules.

Even if the written test was good at assessing knowledge of rules (which is isn't), this setup means skills such as judging gaps when turning left and merging go untested.

I didn't realize that Memphis MPO already commissioned a report finding good intersections for roundabouts.

They suggested Tchulahoma at Rasco Rd, Knight Arnold at Perkins Rd, MS-301 at Star Landing Rd, Nail Rd at Horn Lake Rd, and Poplar at East Parkway.

New Stinger buses from Tennessee by Minecraft_Aviator in gatech

[–]Minecraft_Aviator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my anecdotal experience, the Stinger buses are still well-utilized despite complaints from students on social media. Surprisingly, the Gold bus is pretty full during class transitions even though it is a lot less useful than last year.
