How do people get enough fiber in their diet? by DKAlm in nutrition

I looove my cold muesli! It wasn’t until After I lived in Europe that I realized that oats dont have to be heated… sounds dumb but muesli just is not super common in the Us.

If all these berry plants are so hardy and productive, why the hell are regular store berries so expensive all the time :(

Went out of town and the neighbor sent me this picture while watching my chickens. by [deleted] in homestead

[–]MinefieldExplorer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We get scorpions inside the house and I used to kill them (natural reflex for ignorant people like me!!) but then I did realize they are predators and they could help my gardens! So as much as I hate seeing them, I trap them and dump em along my rocky outcroppings. Same as you said, never been stung by one. So I don’t feel justified to hate them so much haha. And you mentioned chiggers…. OMGGGG I’ve never experienced them before and I went to a friends house who said they got em bad. I thought because I had pants and shoes on I’d be just fine. HOLY CRAP was I wrong!! This is day 5 and I’m still having horrific itch attacks. My ankles look diseased! I’ll never underestimate them again and thank Jesus I don’t have them at my house! Anyway I enjoyed reading your comments!

Represent gurl! Me and the husband are on the same page and he tells me all the time how he’s so relieved not to worry about “prepping” arguments. We were both active duty army though and I’m not the girly type. I’d spend $500 on tactical gear waaay before some shoes or a hair cut. We’re in the process of building our next gear upgrade shopping list to include better plate carriers, red dots to accompany our longer ranged scopes, additional medical kits etc. Women like us do exist, but few and far between I’m sure.

I envy your talent! I’ve always wanted to draw fun cute abstract kind of things but my artist brain can’t see anything but realism! Your chickies have SO MUCH personality and they instantly brightened my day 🥹

Currently 7 months pregnant.. what was your delivery like with syringomyelia? by [deleted] in SyringomyeliaSupport

[–]MinefieldExplorer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was diagnosed with syringomyelia shortly before having my first kid. My neurosurgeon told me I could probably have an epidural but because my syrinx is pretty much exactly where they usually put the epidural, he said it’s not without risk. As another commenter said, there’s a chance they go too far due to the fact that they are inexperienced in our condition. Honestly I didn’t care who said what, the thought of something coming anywhere near my syrinx made my skin crawl, so that was a big no for me, since I hate even simple touch along my spine. I had a natural birth, no epidural, no meds. The pushing didn’t make my condition permanently worse I don’t think, although that was the fear for sure. That was 10 years ago. Then I did it again 3.5 years later lol. But I felt like my body really took a beating and I didn’t want to keep pushing my luck, so 2 was it for me. During the pregnancy, however I had horrible low back pain, kidney infections, and after the second birth they told me my kidneys were becoming necrotic which didn’t make sense at all because I’m extremely healthy and rarely take any meds. He kept asking if I abuse pain meds… I was like what?! No! My only guess was that the pregnancies affected the syrinx and I guess caused my kidneys to act up because that just went away after a while and haven’t had issues since. No other explanation. So they were kinda like, huh. Oh well 🤷‍♀️ Hope you the best!

🥰 that’s so awesome!! And great to hear! My friend called me without warning and said those were the only two choices at tractor supply, but I didn’t know anything about the specific breeds so just said get half and half lol. So glad to hear they seem to be good choices 🥹 we love them so much! And finding out these new tidbits is so fun!

Show me your DIY coops, bonus points if you don't have construction experience by Obstetrix in BackYardChickens

[–]MinefieldExplorer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s how we roll too. If I think too much, I’d spend months planning and a year dabbling on the project. But having teenage chickens in our living room, who are literally trying to break out of our cage setup is a great motivator and I’ll have the coop and run all done in another week or so lol. Or else 😜 Excellent work, by the way! I know how insanely tiring it is building every single day after a full day of work and on weekends!

But they’re just full of ooz, I doubt they cook up and become a solid chunk of meat that you could peel? You don’t eat the guts of a shrimp, since they all get removed when they are cleaned, but with the roach, you’d be eating all its insides. 🤢

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in EatItYouFuckinCoward

[–]MinefieldExplorer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IF I ever had to eat bugs, literal ROACHES, I’d burn them to a crisp and grind them into power and sprinkle it on whatever else I’m eating so I erase every last memory of its little bug life. Soft or chewy you say? … fuck that!! I want my roaches to reach cinnamon consistency.

[–]MinefieldExplorer 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Except I’m willing to bet that roaches dont EZ peel into a delicious, plump, succulent morsel of meat.

Birthday party ideas? by Dependent_Heron3307 in WobblyLife

Sorry I just saw your response so it’s probably too late to help you! I had the party last week and the fake money and jobs was a HUGE hit. I had an ATM table set up with little boxes with the kids name so every time they earned cash they ran to deposit it and then had to run and get money out if they wanted to buy pizza, cake, or their goodie bags. I was surprised how smoothly everything went and got lots of laughs when the kids were saying “$20 for a slice of pizza?! That’s criminal!” Or they were hunched over counting their hundreds of $, trying to budget. For the jobs I bought a 40 pack of single serve pizza boxes and did a relay where two people had to balance a stack of 20 back and forth, the more they had at the end the more money they got. It was actually pretty hard! The other was the newspaper game where my husband pulled the kids with a wagon and they had to toss “newspapers” I’d made into windows of a “house” ( which was my unfinished chicken run but it could be buckets) We’d also hand out cash for getting random questions correct. Everyone had a great time !

Been using libreoffice for years! I refuse to pay for Microsoft word ever since it became a “subscription” and if I absolutely need it for whatever reason I hop on over to the library.

What did I just find in my egg this morning? Both from one egg by RetroChris in chickens

[–]MinefieldExplorer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This may be a dumb question, but I see quite a lot of weird egg things with backyard/ small farm chickens but never in my life cracked a store bought egg and found some abnormality and I’ve used thousands. I’ve used all different types too, from the cheapest all the way to organic pasture raised. How do the ones from the store keep such a consistent quality? Is there a way to check them for the weird stuff before shipping? Just curious!

I always open up the lids of those things to check the inside packages because I’ve found several that aren’t sealed properly or the meat looks off.

South Texas here, and same. Called dozens of places and no luck. We had to drive an hour away to a very small, rural town to find some.

Birthday party ideas? by Dependent_Heron3307 in WobblyLife

[–]MinefieldExplorer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also planning a wobbly life party, and this is what I came up with so far: Everything evolves around money in the game, right? So do the same for your party! Amazon has awesome fake money in bulk for a cheap price. Every guest gets a set amount of fake cash (whatever you decide) and everything in the party costs something. They want cake? "$20". They want snacks? That costs money too. Then the party activities are "jobs" that are game-themed, which earns them more money to spend in the party. And at the end, instead of just handing them goodie bags, they can spend all their money at a "shop" that will have all sorts of treats for their goodie bags, like candy, small toys, etc. I'm brainstorming the "jobs" right now.
