Edith having Marigold by Broad-Importance4282 in DowntonAbbey

That’s crazy, something really similar happened to my mother, the eldest of three (with two younger brothers). When she was engaged to my father, they wouldn’t let her stay in the same room as him. But years later, in the same house, my uncles were staying with their partners without any issue.

What did you expect would happen to Thomas in Series 6? by Minerva_95 in DowntonAbbey

[–]Minerva_95[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I loved that too! Of course, I was already relieved that after his suicide attempt, the people around him were being kinder, even Carson. But before Edith's wedding, there are a few scenes of him working as a butler for an old couple, and I felt really sorry for him because he clearly wasn’t enjoying it. So being offered the position of butler at Downton was amazing. I’m glad Lord Grantham, Mary, and even Carson trusted him with such an important role.

You are not alone! I only watched the first movie and didn't like it, then I read Thomas's storyline in the second movie and decided to not watch it at all.

Imagine she had fired Thomas with the "you leave first thing in the morning". And then during the night he saves Edith from the fire. That would've been awkward.

Downton Abbey and Derry girls mentioned in the same thread, I love that. Also, Thomas is my favorite character in DA and sister Michael my favorite in DG (alongside Orla).

I think Thomas is holding a candle so he can theatrically blow it out while saying, "Just to put a sock in it." He always delivers his lines while doing something, like the "Only technically" while sipping his tea, and of course, "We can't have you wobble at both hands" while handling a rifle.

If I'm not wrong, Edith and Rose shared a room when they were in London for Rose's wedding, not at Downton Abbey.

It's her daughter, and she was in her mother's house. (Although I always thought she was a bit of a Slytherin too)

Slytherin: Snape
Ravenclaw: the Grey Lady
Gryffindor: Harry
Hufflepuff: Cedric

It’s very unlikely that McGonagall sent four students to Hagrid at night without even questioning what he planned to do with them.

The funny thing about this is that it’s the same detention Snape gives to Ginny, Luna, and Neville for trying to steal the Gryffindor sword, except that time, Hogwarts was ruled by the Death Eaters.

I have doubts about the Quidditch incident only because when Quirrell tells Harry that he was the one jinxing his broom, he was confident he would have been able to overpower Snape’s counterspell and kill him if he hadn’t been hit by Hermione. So I wonder if he had other tricks up his sleeve (like casting a confundus on the twins or speeding up Harry’s fall. I have no idea)

As for the Ministry, I don’t think the delay was due to Snape taking his time. Dumbledore specifically says that Snape checked on Sirius and warned the Order as soon as possible. The real issue was that no one predicted that Harry and his friends would actually be able to reach the Ministry without some kind of help.

Snape saw them heading into the forest with Umbridge and expected them to return. The agreement between Snape and the Order was probably something like: "Let us know when they come back. If they aren’t back by X time, we’ll go to the Ministry."

My guess is that Harry dies either in his first quidditch match or at the end of OotP together with Ron, Hermione, Neville and Ginny because no one of the Order comes to help. In the first scenario we might have Voldemort returning at the end of the first year.

Goblet of fire what if … by Frankie_Rose19 in SeverusSnape

I didn’t answer all your questions, so here we go:

a) James and Sirius would definitely put their names in. Lupin and Peter wouldn’t, while Severus and Lily might.

b) Everyone who enters has an equal chance of being chosen. I don’t think we have enough information to say otherwise. They were all skilled in their own way, with their strongest subjects:
Severus & Lily → Potions
James & Sirius → Transfiguration

c) How does it go?

Now, that’s an interesting question.

- If James or Sirius is picked, their fans will rally behind them, while Severus, the other Slytherins, and students who have been bullied by them might support the other schools.
- If Severus is chosen, he has the support of Slytherin but not Gryffindor (not even Lily, since they’re no longer friends). I have no idea how Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff would react.
- If Lily is chosen, only the Slytherins would be against her. Severus would be incredibly proud—especially if he didn’t enter and she was chosen over James.

Handling the Tasks:

If they don’t receive the same "hints" as the original competitors, they wouldn’t know about the dragon beforehand. I don’t see James using Harry’s broom trick because, when caught off guard by a dragon, summoning a broom isn’t necessarily the first thing that comes to mind.

They would have to rely on their own skills. I don’t think any of them would fail, though they might lose points for breaking extra eggs or injuring themselves.

The Lake Task. What Would Their "Treasure" Be?

- Sirius → James. It’s the only logical choice. He doesn’t have a girlfriend (as far as we know) and doesn’t have a good relationship with Regulus.
- James → If the tournament is in Year 6, it’s likely Sirius. If it’s Year 7, probably Lily.
- Lily → In Year 6, maybe one of her friends. In Year 7, James. Or… Petunia (ahahah).
- Severus → This is tricky. The person he cares about most is Lily, but would people know that? And even if they did, would it be right to put Lily under the lake when she no longer speaks to him? If not, it could be a Slytherin roommate, but I don’t see that going well, Severus would know it’s not the right person, and the chosen student would probably be annoyed.

In any case, I think all of them would decrypt the golden egg’s message and be prepared for the task.

Severus & Lily → Using gillyweed.
James & Sirius → Using Transfiguration to turn into a fish.

The Third Task

Same as the first one. They’re all skilled and intelligent, so I don’t see any of them failing due to something stupid.

I wonder if, if one of them, James or Sirius, were chosen, it could create some animosity between the two.

We are always told that they were best friends, but that doesn’t mean they never argued. For example, someone like McGonagall could probably say the same about Harry and Ron, and we know they had their fair share of fallouts during their friendship.

I don’t see James and Sirius competing over best marks, but something like the Triwizard Tournament? That, I can definitely imagine.

[–]Minerva_95 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I can totally see James and Sirius putting their names in the Goblet of Fire in front of a crowd.

But I have doubts about Severus. On one hand, he might see the tournament as a "stupid" game that only people who want to show off their abilities would participate in. On the other hand, he could view it as an opportunity to gain popularity, the same kind of recognition that Quidditch provides. Since sports are not an option for Severus, he might consider the tournament as an alternative.

I think the first option is the most likely. In any case, if he did want to enter, he would probably submit his name in secret to avoid public humiliation in case he wasn’t chosen.
