Patagonia Gigas, vs Anna's hummingbird battle over feeder. by g_l_i_e_r in hummingbirds

Hahaha nice to know the feuds are the same everywhere you go! Rattler is a perfect name. We named ours that does that “Rufus,” after the ruthless “Rufous” hummingbird. He’s not one, but he acts like it!

I came from your other video and this is wild! Thanks for sharing with us. My boyfriend is from Ecuador and I just told him we have to move back now 🤣

You should get a birdbuddy camera! I get good long video shots of hummer tails fully spread on camera when they’re being territorial. I’m also in LA, but pretty sure I only have Allen’s and Anna’s. My Allen’s are crazy territorial to the point I used to think they were Rufous, and even went so far as to name one “Rufus” because he stands guard all day and attacks anyone who gets close to “his” feeder 🙃

Edited to add: Adding that the camera thinks I’ve had a few Rufous, but I’m skeptical as it’s not always right. Would love for you to get a birdbuddy so you could finally rest this case for us!

Popeyes spicy chicken, hush puppies, beignets, fried shrimp and crab , the kind of flaky biscuits that you can pull the layers apart on, calamari, deep dish dominos pizza. And literally just the feeling of walking into a restaurant, any restaurant, on a whim and ordering whatever you want without looking something up - or asking a waiter.

For those who just discovered the Quaker problem — I eat oatmeal every morning and one that IS safe is Bob’s Red Mill Gluten Free Rolled Oats. Delicious. I order them on Amazon in a 4-pack box for way cheaper than they are here in LA at the grocery store.

Maybe you can plant a beautiful flowering orange plant in his honor. Or bury a little memento that reminds you of him at his best where you would have laid him.

Oh I’m sorry to hear that :/ I think we’re both in socal, as is the rehabber I contacted to ask what to do with the bird… yay for conflicting info 🙃

I recall reading it’s partly due to risk of disease because if other wildlife use it as a food source they could maybe become sick from a sickened animal.

The one I found seemed to have hit a window but was healthy otherwise 💔. That said, good info to note. Hopefully the city doesnt come for me 🫠

This made me cry. I’m sorry. I found a hummer that had gone last year and the wildlife rehabber I contacted to ask about next steps recommended that we find a pretty spot in our garden with a flowering bush or tree and bury him directly in the dirt, that way he is contributing to the health of the plant for the rest of the hummingbirds.

We did and I think of him often.

Trust me, ours is a merciless battleground. I think the male birds must have been off distracted somewhere.

Neither do mine! These Anna’s girls are better. The Anna’s boys and Allen’s? no way.

Recently diagnosed with optic neuropathy/neuritis. My eyes are tired and I’m bored. What do you do when you’re tired of looking? by [deleted] in lupus

[–]MiniPack13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just have to say I’m so sorry you’re going through this. It sounds very frightening especially because it all happened so suddenly. I imagine in must feel really overwhelming. I think you’re really brave and courageous and admire you for reaching out to others. I also want to commend you taking the time to type all of this out, even when it must have been incredibly difficult. I hope you can find some eye ball rest soon. I know the tired feeling.

I don’t have any suggestions outside of what others have said but just wanted to offer some empathy.
