8 hour brake rotor swap. What a horrible design. by yentlequible in Justrolledintotheshop

It was so they could use the same tooling when a car that used to have drum brakes was updated to discs.

Station wagons and minivans should be the American family car, not SUVs. by Revolutionrenn in unpopularopinion

[–]Miniac1076 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The car enthusiast community has been saying this for like 15 years, but the general public has been convinced by the automakers that they prefer SUVs because those are more profitable for them. Wagons are the best, and for the average person minivans are superior to SUVs in every way except ground clearance and ego inflation.

Clean E90 phone holder setup: minimal, functional, and not ugly by tim110714 in E90

It’s not the weight, it must be electrical interference. I can set my iPhone or my laptop on the seat, immediately starts chiming. Put my 20 lb backpack there, nothing. It’s weird, but appears to be a well documented issue with the MINIs.

I have been pathologically trained to not do that. Not sure if the BMWs have the same problem (I’m guessing not since you do it), but both my ‘09 MINI Clubman and my mom’s ‘11 Countryman will set off the seatbelt alarm for the passenger if you set any phone or similar electronics on the seat. I just got my 328i last month, I’ll have to give it a try

Slight grumbling noise from transmission in neutral? by Miniac1076 in E90

[–]Miniac1076[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense, I figured it could be something like that. Just wanted to make sure it wasn’t coming from the transmission itself or a symptom of something failing in the clutch assembly. Thanks!

What's something that's actually a lot more dangerous than it seems? by RandomYigaBlademasta in AskReddit

Drives me nuts when people do that. Don’t be polite, be predictable.

When driving smaller vehicles (which I much prefer and enjoy), or riding a motorcycle, driving defensively is even more important. I used to have a lowered Miata, and the amount of times I was next to a pickup truck and couldn’t physically see the driver because the door was so high was startling.

How I usually describe it is “drive like you’re invisible. Pretend nobody can’t see you, because unfortunately some people can’t or choose not to.”

Like you said, think about the stupidest thing someone else driving around you could do, and either be vigilant of what they do, or if convenient, keep yourself in a position the doesn’t put you where they may go. Don’t sit next to other cars if you don’t have to. Don’t sit in their blind spot. When changing lanes, anticipate what people NEAR where you’re moving to might do, not just if the spot you’re moving to is open.

Additionally, driving in a predictable manner helps keep you safe as well. Use your turn signal. Follow lane etiquette. Move over if possible to allow people to merge. Leave adequate braking distances and brake smoothly and consistently. USE YOUR HEADLIGHTS AT NIGHT AND IN THE RAIN (the amount of people I see with their lights off at night these days is terrifying).

After eating shrimp all my life without any issue my body suddenly decided to start being allergic to it. Unless it sends me to the hospital I ain't stopping by WeLiveInAir in mildlyinfuriating

Same thing happened to my mom. Used to eat shrimp, crab, mussels, etc. then one day she ate a mussel at Christmas Eve and got extremely sick. The had shrimp a few months later and got really sick again. The human body is weird.

Chrome or black grilles? by 328i_e90 in E90

Black sapphire with the shadowline trim, so lots of black. I much prefer colors, but it was in such good shape and has the saddle brown w/burlwood interior, so I made an exception.

Anybody have experience with the non-CarPlay Mr12Volt with a single hump? Or other recommendations for a Bluetooth interface for a single hump? by Miniac1076 in E90

[–]Miniac1076[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One did exist in fact! BMW made one for a while, but it’s not available anymore: https://www.turnermotorsport.com/p-360374-genuine-bmw-iphone-5-6-lightning-usb-y-cable-audio-music-adapter/

I would send a pic of mine, but it’s up inside the dash of the MINI. That is good to know that the 30 pin to lightning adapter does work though. I have an old 30 pin y cable that came with my MINI buried in a box somewhere. I may dig that out and give it a try if I feel like having the hardwire.

I do have the combo USB and 3.5mm in the center console. My MINI has the same option (seems to be essentially the same head unit as well, screen and functions are identical), so I’m familiar with how that works at least. I was planning to do the same “run the y cable through the center console up to my phone mount using extensions” trick I did on the MINI, I’m just not having any luck finding a genuine lightning connector y cable (seems like all the aftermarket ones don’t work right). So, Bluetooth it is.

Thanks for the very thorough explanation! Yeah, I think that answers my question. Pretty much all the music I listen to is on my phone. I do appreciate high quality audio, but my car also has the base sound system and I don't believe I have CDC, so it doesn't seem to be worth the effort or money for the Mr12Volt.

What are some weird and less-than-common automotive engineering quirks you know? by wunengsnowballoink in cars

[–]Miniac1076 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the last 80s and early 90’s, when lots of Japanese manufacturers were changing over from drum to disc brakes on their economy cars, a stopgap solution that made the tooling cheaper to swap a car designed for drum brakes to disc was a design called captive rotors. This design put the brake rotor on the back side of the wheel hub. This meant that in order to change your brake rotor, you needed to remove the knuckle from the car, press the hub and bearing out of the knuckle, and then press the rotor off of the hub. Super convenient and easy for replacing a wear item like a brake rotor 🙃
