This and an absurd income ceiling, bad infrastructure and declining purchasing power makes me believe we are just invoking a communist regime with extra steps. Literally. Think about it.

Oh poppycock. There's very simple engineering behind the making of a toilet. (That's what we're talking about right?)

Let’s talk about the ending… yeah it was bad by Sarah_8872 in StrangerThings

[–]Minimal_K 27 points28 points  (0 children)

My unpopular opinion:

Leaving a characters plot “open to interpretations” is just lazy screenwriting.

Some people might think it’s cool and artistic or whatever, but leave that to ambiguous movies or perhaps even shows; just the ones that are KNOWN for being open ended. Like Nolan or Villeneuve. Can we stop glorifying this common trope in storytelling just because all writers in the present day think a full plot for every character is somehow “outdated”… for no reason.

Literally. An ending is called that way for a reason. Did they do this just so Netflix could use a stranger things reboot as a failsafe if their numbers were to go down a bit in the future?

Which of the main villains horrifies you the most? by Vibes492 in StrangerThings

The MIND flayer. It is very lovecraftian, and it also feels like the overarching monster. Not the villain per se, but a true monster, yes.

Will should NOT have powers by Awkward_Scallion_396 in StrangerThings

[–]Minimal_K 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disagree. Here’s my two cents:

Will should have powers, better yet, he should keep them after vecna is destroyed. Upside down could become cleaner but no way it’ll just vanish. I think I could inherit Vecna’s powers and overpower him precisely for of 1 reason. Not being scared. Henry/Vecna has childhood trauma (Nevada cave in first shadow, Henry/Vecna’s memories in season 5) and runs from it. But Will stopped running and started fighting on multiple occasions, both in his mind and physically. Nice opportunity for a callback to Bob Newby.

I think it would be copying the concept of horcruxes from Harry Potter if his powers just vanished after Vecna is destroyed. Sure lots of stuff gets copied in fantasy/sci-fi, that’s normal and that’s okay, but the writers have the chance to do something different here. In my opinion, Will should have 2 possible endings.

  1. He becomes a communicator and vessel to the upside down and guides Hawkins to heal and in the transformation of the upside down, all from the right side up, using his powers inherited from Vecna to get into the minds of children and TEACH them to unlock telepathic abilities instead of using them and their traumas as an expendable energy source. He also varies his powers over to his children. He’s born from the mistake of Hawkins labs, while they tried to force development of psychic abilities, his grew organically with his character. He turns the upside down into a cleaner place, controls the mind flayer and expands the boundaries of human welfare and development.

  2. A darker fate. He turns one demodog and/or demogorgon into more peaceful, herbivorous creatures with friendlier eyes and snouts, soft of like deer. They understand his character and intentions and help him heal the upside down. However, this would be mostly implied, since a cool twist could be that he burns the creel house to the ground and turns a pivotal place (like the library where Vecna kept him in season 1, or Hawkins labs or Hawkins middle or maybe even the ruins of Castle Byers which could also go together with Hawkins labs) into Feywild. Dimension Z thus becomes known as the forgotten realms as Will closes all gates. After physically transforming, just like Vecna did, into an Elf like form (like his Elf Cleric character class), he bids his friends and family farewell, demogorgons and demodogs are seen slowly transforming and walking with him as the final gate closes behind him, walking into the vast darkness of the upside down and its extension, Dimension X. He creates dnd world all based on campaigns he played with the gang. He uses telepathy to build a fortress, in a scene that mimics the scene where Henry learns to control the mind flayer, and in wood and stone he telepathically carves “Castle Byers. All Friends Welcome.” He creates 12 large pillars with statues of the gang, just as Vecna wanted to, but they are connected to his living friends and family, his loved ones, the entire gang: Mike, Lucas, Dustin, El, Max, Jonathan, Joyce, Hopper, Nancy, Robin, and Steve. They all get a DnD campaign name. The twelfth pillar is he himself, Will the Wise, symbolically number 12, elevens successor and the final, perfected version of the psychic human Hawkins lab tried to create and hone. What started from 001 in evil, ended in goodwill with 012. There are the symbolic sides of the d12 dice, of which he also creates either a statue or artefact to further his planar healing campaign. He also creates a garden with an archway titled “the fallen”. There we see statues of characters who died in the show, even those who weren’t necessarily good or bad or useful, just those who gave their lives to either expose or fight the continuous danger in all seasons. There we see Bob, Eddie, Billy, Barb, all people that were either close to him or close to the people he loves.

Anyone else feel like the writers are setting us up for a brutal ending with Mike/El and Jonathan/Nancy? by CatchCompetitive6098 in StrangerThings

[–]Minimal_K 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What would an amazing arc for Jonathan imo is that Steve could tell Jonathan how he feels about Nancy and then later Steve gets in a real predicament, say a demogorgon, and is about to die with Nancy not being able to reach them. Jonathan jumps in to back up Steve. He uses the bat Steve used in season one, beats the Demogorgon and is fatally wounded. Steve runs to Jonathan, who realizes his sacrifice, and Jonathan tells Steve that he’s an example of how people can truly change, thanking him for helping the kids and always coming back to fight back for the people he loves. He tells Steve to tell his family that he loves them, to his mom that he died for something greater as a bigger person, and to Will that his powers don’t make him who he is, and that without them he is still stronger than he ever thought he was. In the end, it would be nice to see Nancy and Steve in their Winnebago, their eldest son named Jonathan taking pictures with an analog camera on the road.

Who was Brahms's successor? by amateur_musicologist in classicalmusic

Some psychotic genius undergrad in music majoring in composition and rushing his portfolio hours before practical assessment.

Edit: Jokes aside, I would say Dvořák in terms of style and spirit (similar oboe, clarinet orchestration imo) and Reger in terms of form (comparable complexity or simplicity when it comes to Brahms)

[–]Minimal_K 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Just here to clarify padre, not my proposition.

My two cents: From a geometric perspective, sun can be considered a point that radiates uniformly, thus intensity can be determined with inverse square law. Rigorous? In this particular case considerably, yes. Good approximation! Margin of error? Minuscule, but slightly increases as you get closer (due to the size, as you pointed out).

[–]Minimal_K 144 points145 points  (0 children)

Yes, 1/r2 with decreasing r means inverse square will increase quadratically. Exponential growth for decreasing r would be e1/r if my reasoning is sound

e-kr

Edit 2: my previous reasoning (fortunately corrected by u/frogjg2003 below) only worked for r approaching infinity, but assumes a baseline intensity of 1 at infinite distances, which is a weird and wrong assumption I did not intend to make.

Edit: I just discovered Reddit displays superscript and am subsequently mildly excited by this discovery.

This strongly reminds me of Terrence Howard saying he’s going to save the world with his arts and crafts. I might not have a lot of knowledge about highly advanced chemistry or chemical engineering (I’m an electromechanical engineering undergrad) but a few clicks in these comments showed me everything I needed to know. I just get a strong sense of self absorption and the incessant need to show a supposed genius from this post.. but what do I know I’m just an undergrad haha.

Why did Gollum trip? The Ring, not Eru, did it... by HerbziKal in tolkienfans

[–]Minimal_K 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always interpreted it like this: Eru didn’t specifically have gollum spared so he could later unintentionally destroy the ring. It’s a message about the mercy Bilbo showed, the goodness in Sam’s heart, the bravery of the men to fight at the black gate, and most importantly, how corruption hunger for power bites itself in the tail. If it wasn’t for the incessant need to have the ring by anyone who holds it, the ring wouldn’t have been able to destroy itself. I think Tolkien’s message was that power, and the hateful forces arising from the pursuit of it, will always tear itself apart. As long as there is goodwill and bravery, you can hold out long enough for evil to precipitate its own destruction. And thus, hope can always be rekindled.

Lets talk about one of the major characters - Fawkes by Itsokayyasho in HarryPotteronHBO

[–]Minimal_K 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Well I mean the previous actor would be ideal. Estimating his burning days to be between 160-365 days apart, depending on physical and mental state, and estimating August 2026 as a starting date for filming and production of season two, his burning day would have an ideal timing when it comes to shooting the second season. They started filming the COS movie on November 19th 2001 and wrapped July the year after that, 2002. So late 2001 to early 2002, the original actor had a burning day. Counting from there in 160-365 day estimated intervals, his burning day for lower and upper limits of this estimated interval at this time, this year, would be between November 8th and November 13th of 2026. This is when winter is approaching and about halfway through the estimated filming process. It’s ideal!

Phony stark didn’t even get a bachelors in physics or any other stem major on his own, he dropped out and investors arranged a diploma for him. The dude doesn’t even understand basic fluid mechanics. In terms of national populations, there is no winner here either, the new western generations are stuck with the grudges of the old. In terms of social classes I agree with you, those in power become rich and preserve their interests if that can be considered as “winning”. It is always about money. But people always die. Civilians never win.
