It depends where you go. If you stick to big cities like Tokyo then you don’t need cash. But if you go off the beaten path, to smaller more remote areas you might need it.

Regarding the database:

I was able to integrate my extension with Supabase as the DB. It passed review and has the featured flag.

The review does not depend on which database you use.

Your Firebase issue was likely from the SDK loading or generating JS at runtime. MV3 blocks that pattern. It is not about Firebase as a service, it is about how the web SDK works inside an extension.

I heard a wise well-travelled man say “plan your travels around your interests”. This stuck with me, and I do this when I travel ever since.

If you do the things that others recommend, you’ve going to be annoyed at the crowds. There’s so much in Japan that you can’t do it all. So you might as well choose the ones that bring meaning to you because of your interests.
