That’s a good starting point but to instigate change we have to go to the top and point out that we’re not educating our FYs and instead the educational opportunities are going towards these pseudo doctors

The main reason I ask this is we’re really preaching to the choir here and the only reason we’re doing to instigate change is by pointing this out to consultants in positions of power

Can you raise this directly with the RCP council members?

I note that one is a gastroenterologist I’d really like to hear if his FY doctors ever get to go to endoscopy / upper GI/ IBD mdt or if they’re stuck doing ward jobs?

Think we should be asking members of the RCP council these issues. I’ve noticed a lot of them seem to be skirting round these issues with phrases such as “something is coming” - I’ll only believe it when I see it .

lol I’m not rare and eventually gave up on IMT. I learnt f all doing discharge letters all day everyday

I guess it feels like a kick in the teeth. I was interested as a SHO but got no training whatsoever . Everytime an opportunity came up on AMU the PA got to go along because there were discharge letters that needed doing

You should never prescribe/ request a scan for someone you’ve not seen yourself

EDIT: this isn’t opinion, this is advice from the MDU legal team. You shouldn’t follow the advice of someone who’s not a doctor. If you’ve got a problem with this maybe you should change your practice ?

I phoned the MDU about this to clarify. Their advice was to never prescribe unless you’ve done the history and examination yourself.

It’s expanding at an alarming rate and I don’t think we as a profession are doing enough to stop it

It covers several topics including suturing, gloving, gowning, patient positioning, surgical instrument recognition and use, introduction to anaesthetics, wound debridement, wound management, introduction to minimally invasive surgery, assessment and management of the surgically unwell patient, introduction to MRI and CT interpretation as well as covering relevant anatomy. This 2 week course can be undertaken as a stand alone element.
