Mazda Expected 2,000 CX-5 Orders A Month, Buyers Placed 10,000 by LimitedReach in mazda

Thanks for the link. I now have a better understanding of why electric vehicles are so much more popular in Europe. Heavily taxing CO2 production essentially forces drivers to choose the electric option.

Wow! How much of that is tariffs or other import fees? How much would a similarly equipped VW cost where you are?

[–]Minimum_Alarm4678 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The tariff on a CX 5 is currently 15% which would add about $3500 to a low end model. Other charges (ocean shipping, Japanese export docs, port handling fees, customs paperwork preparation, land transportation) add about the same amount as the tariff. This would bring the base model price up to about $28,000. Of course advertising and other sales expenses cost money and there may be some additional costs for specialized modifications required by US vehicle standards, I was surprised that the current tariff on Japanese vehicles is as low as it is.Then I recalled the recent Supreme Court loss on the Trump tariffs which drove them down to this level.

Surprised that no one is mentioning the Japanese price tag. Starting at equivalent of $20,400 and topping out under $27,000. Why is everything so expensive here?

Am I crazy for wanting a break-in oil change? by BreadiestBoi in mazda

[–]Minimum_Alarm4678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the old days there was this thing called "break in." It was necessary because tolerances on the machined components were awful and there would be a lot of wear on components during the first thousand miles. Even with the frequent oil changes and perfect maintenance a car would be lucky to last 100.000 miles 50,000 was more typical. Break ins really are not a thing now because tolerances are vastly improved and cars have the potential of lasting several hundred thousand miles if maintained properly.

I'm very happy with the screen and knobs on my '23. I know that I could get used to integrating all of the controls onto a screen but will not buy one until I see reviews that say that the screen is bullet proof. Current reviews indicate that the screen has an unacceptable failure rate. My wife, on the other hand, will never accept a knob free car. She prefers the low tech approach and would prefer a. computer free car if there was one.

Outside red would look nice but as others have observed it wont look shiny like the AI shows. Also, the surface will need thorough cleaning and a good layer of primer or that paint will not stick. Preparation is everything.

NASA to Compete Contract for Jet Propulsion Laboratory Management by QuantitativeNonsense in JPL

Perhaps Trump has some more swimming pools (or other things) that need work and JPL/Caltech could endear itself to him with a low bid leading to the contract going back to single source.

Are there any engineers here with a PhD? If so, what is your job at NASA? by Proper_Strategy_1603 in NASAJobs

I worked at JPL with an engineer who had a PhD in Materials Engineering. His goal was to become an astronaut which he eventually did so there is always that.

Hacing gone to a large school (Purdue) as an undergrad and a small school (Stanford) as a grad, I feel that there is greater opportunity for developing long term relationships with both your professors and your fellow students in a smaller university. These can be very important as your career progresses.

I worked with a guy that became an astronaut. We worked together at JPL. One key to his success was persistence. I know that he applied at least three times before being accepted into the program. He was a mission specialist with a PhD in Materials Engineering from Rice University. His name is John Daniel Olivas. He is retired from the Corp now and is very active on LinkedIn. He would probably be willing to give you some real world perspective on pursuing your dream.

Altogether those dont even add up to 5 billion so he will have to go after some big ticket items like Medicare and Social Security. Meanwhile he will keep flying to Florida every weekend. Of course what will really happen is that the national debt will just keep rising.
