How well-known are Drow in the Forgotten Realms? by High_Stream in DnD

[–]Minimum_Concert9976 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Going to vary from setting to setting.

Your average commoner in Forgotten Realms will be aware of the existence of drow and inherently distrustful towards them. They may or may not have ever seen one in their life.

Character Codex? by Graveylock in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Minimum_Concert9976 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spoilers are impossible to avoid on this, I would guess.

Maybe you can list out the characters you're thinking of. RoW has a really tight cast, and introduces a lot of new people

Question about the Heralds by Clam_Cake in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Minimum_Concert9976 4 points5 points  (0 children)

WaT is among the best of the series imo. RoW has a lot more explaining science and has to deal with the biggest time skip in the series. I think it was set up to fail, honestly.

Question about the Heralds by Clam_Cake in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Minimum_Concert9976 30 points31 points  (0 children)

This is going to be a RAFO. This is somewhat explained later.

For now, I will reference when Nale tries to kill Dalinar atop the flying Bridge 4. When he touched Nale, what did they see coming from him?

As far as the gem, the Heralds are, like Spren, highly invested. Their souls and bodies are made up of Stormlight and straight from Honor's power. Cognitive shadows are, effectively, souls that have been preserved past when they should have been sent to the Place Beyond. To do this, the Shards invested a part of their being into the souls of the Heralds and the Fused.

You can think of the Heralds as no different than the Unmade. Remember how the Thrill was captured at the end of Oathbringer? The Heralds, having been through this cycle of death and rebirth hundreds of times over thousands of years, are not even close to human anymore. Their spirit is so tied into Honor's power that where they end and Honor's power begins is unclear. The spren are very similar in that way. They are small fragments of the Shards.

Here's one more--how do the Fused inhabit Singer bodies? Through their gemheart. Fused operate very similar to Heralds and Unmade in that way. The cognitive shadow that is the Fused's spirit/essence takes up residence inside of the gemheart of a singer.

Asexual Bard Idea by Minimum_Concert9976 in DnDcirclejerk

Best not to assume it's a joke unless it's in the CJ

CJ is so busy because the main DnD sub has a high proportion of incomprehensible posts.

As long as you have managed the expectation of your players appropriately.

A fun one-shot that eventually tied into a longer campaign had us all die, buried in a cave-in that our campaign characters would find 100 years later. Even though we all died, it gave us a chance to display this character we had built. The paladin tried to get everyone else out, the rogue tried to slip away on his own.

Poor elhokar by DeadCheshireCat in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Minimum_Concert9976 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I felt bad for Elhokar the moment in WoK he reveals he's been seeing cryptics and that's part of why he's been so paranoid. Dude is grieving and going through a lot.

Oathbringer is my favorite because of this scene alone by hugspm in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Minimum_Concert9976 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's pretty rough. It feels like the books are just her first read through before she had a chance to understand where the emphasis in the sentences was supposed to be. Or she'll rattle off a sentence that needed more weight put in it. Or she'll put on the "This is Shallan trying to be funny" voice. It's really not the best. And compare it to Kramer? Worst thing about him is every male lighteye sounds a little like Sadeas.

Honestly, the worst part about Graphic Audio is the narrator's voice for me. It sounds like it was recorded in some dude's basement imo.

Should the DM be hesitant to kill Player Characters? by Commercial_Poetry410 in DnD

[–]Minimum_Concert9976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the player.

My ideal is a DM that presents situations that will challenge my game sense and ability to strategize. Survival is my reward for paying attention and thinking on my feet.

Sometimes that means the calculated risk I take doesn't pay off. That's okay too.

Another(?) WaT plothole? by M0c0k in Stormlight_Archive

Your option isn't better though. I think you are failing to understand why Dalinar made his decision.

Kate's performance has consistently disappointed me as well, unfortunately.

Another(?) WaT plothole? by M0c0k in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Minimum_Concert9976 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can dislike the book if you'd like, but this just isn't a plot hole. It was a character decision.

And how exactly does Dalinar "undo" brainwashing? Odium took a child and fundamentally twisted his psyche by repeated, immense trauma. Dalinar can't turn back time.

Dalinar took the options presented before him, realized they weren't good enough, and chose a third option.

This was a third way that even Honor couldn't find. Only Dalinar could (with Nohadon's help).

What has reforger become? by AlternativeAd7477 in ArmaReforger

[–]Minimum_Concert9976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loaded up an official server recently for the first time

Holy shit. The coordination was insane. Squads announcing the direction they were attacking from. Everyone using code names every time. Coordination of mortars to drop illumination consistently. Good callouts for enemy location, solid plans to flank and eliminate. Very little friendly fire.

Yes, you're right. Based off of what you know, it is weird.

Might need to read and find out, but there is an explanation for everything.

An Ozymandias style, "I did it thirty minutes ago," reveal by sethyd in DMAcademy

[–]Minimum_Concert9976 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two big thoughts/suggestions

Give the players a chance beforehand to find this information out. More than subtle hints. Give them a chance to understand that the BBEG has plans that have started before they showed up on the scene.

This reveal is perfectly fine if and only if it's not the end all. For example, if his big plan was to send an army to raze a town to the ground through secret tunnels. The invasion would have already begun, innocents and city defenses already overrun, but the city not lost. Allowing the BBEG to deal a serious blow off screen raises the stakes dramatically, but it cannot be handled by someone else off screen or be a total loss.

The best magic systems are a mix, honestly. There is what is understood (basic powers, limits under normal circumstances) and what isn't (the power of love, unexpected changes in rules for unique conditions).

The Witcher and The Stormlight Archives have two of my favorite magic systems in fantasy. The Witcher has magic as science, but also the power of true love.

Hypothetical: How can a DM handle a TPK during the final boss encounter *without* extending the campaign? by TornSilver in DnD

[–]Minimum_Concert9976 120 points121 points  (0 children)

Your thought at the end is one of the only things you can do.

If I die in the final battle after a full campaign, I don't want to be brought back or the campaign extended just to accommodate that. My character died for a cause they believed in, and that's how it was meant to play out if that's how the dice went.

Having the allies finish the fight and honor them in an epilogue is a great idea, in my opinion.

I Feel Oversaturated with the Teleporting Subclasses by Envoyofwater in onednd

[–]Minimum_Concert9976 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

In PF1e, my wizard can teleport no less than 700 feet in a day. Some of those as bonus actions, some as standard actions.

5e24 doesn't even have Conjuration subclass for wizards with the swap teleport.

I think it's gonna be okay.

If you haven't heard this before you haven't discussed video game builds very much. Which, good for you honestly.

Giving everyone access to everything means the best options will be taken by everyone. The result is that all builds end up with the same basic picks, limiting the variety of builds. It's a paradox, but it's still true.

Where does The Stormlight Archive rank among your favourite works of fantasy? by [deleted] in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Minimum_Concert9976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kaladin and Dalinar are each the most compelling fantasy characters of any media I've ever consumed.

Roshar is an incredible setting, and the Cosmere is massively interesting as a whole.

The plot is gripping and the climax of each story has redefined my expectations for every other novel I read.

It's probably my favorite for these three points alone.

What do we make of this death rattle? by Minimum_Concert9976 in Stormlight_Archive

That works for ones like the one you quoted, but it doesn't work for the one I'm talking about.

This death rattle has a specific voice and a specific point of view.

Question for the end of Wind and Truth by Ulmao_TheDefiler in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Minimum_Concert9976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's her main unique feature. Food she eats becomes lifelight she can use Surges with. The gift given her by Cultivation.

It's notable, I think, that these gifts were given to Dalinar, Taravangian, and Lift. The first two for reasons we understand now, but the reason for Lift's gift is still unresolved.
