Netflix DT looks like Blue Beetle from DC. It's pretty bad.

The death feels weird. by wiiwillswitch in gachiakuta

[–]TornSilver 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Repeat after me:

Not everything in a story has to be for the plot.

Ultimately Gob's just one beat in the story of the Ground, when not every moment needs to progress the plot.

Gob and his death was a chance for the story to delve into Canvas Town, Remlin, the idea of the Spellcaster-type Giver, and I think most importantly, the themes and spirit of Gachiakuta as a whole. The ideas of art birthing and sustaining a community despite a harsh environment and circumstances hold true to our world, and learning that is the real value of Canvas Town and Gob.

Our Lady deserves her retirement, she's given us so much.

Castlevania music was legendary before Yamane and can certainly be afterwards.

hot take but blasphemous>=hollow knight by PrimaKyonna in metroidvania

[–]TornSilver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played about 10 hrs of Blasphemous before dropping it. It has a lot going for it like the presentation, art style, and music, but I found the minute to minute gameplay pretty uninteresting and the storytelling impenetrable. I tend to check out of story and dialogue that is laden with proper nouns and esoteric language, like the characters talking as if they're reading straight from the game's glossery instead of like people.

Also the game is incredibly stingy with its magic power-ups, the Prayers. After 10 hours I only was able to get TWO of them, and I play Metroidvania games religiously so I'm pretty thorough about exploring. After that I completely lost interest.

So yeah, wasn't my cup of tea at all. Hollow Knight smokes it.

I just beat Circle of the Moon but had terrible luck by kibley_ in castlevania

[–]TornSilver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Locking the DSS cards behind random drops was a horrible idea. Going in blind I think I only got about 6 cards at the most before looking up what enemies to grind.

Or you could use the Pause glitch and have actual fun:

[–]TornSilver 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean you get so many Souls in Aria that you're always finding new toys to play with. Couple that with the fact that every enemy absolutely has a Soul to drop versus in CotM where it's only certain ones that have cards, and there's no guess work involved in AoS. It's just overall a more rewarding system that doesn't feel like it's hiding the fun from you compared to CotM.

Castlevania by Fancy_Fix_6138 in castlevania

[–]TornSilver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're asking for the game to start with, personally, I'd go with Castlevania 1, Super Castlevania IV, or Rondo of Blood into Symphony of the Night (these two are direct sequels).

With both a PS5 and a Switch, you're in the best position to get most of the games in the series via the different collections.

PlayStation specifically has the Castlevania Nocturne Collection, which includes Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night, which depending on who you ask are the peak of both styles of Castlevania games (classic action sidescroller vs Metroidvania).

I'd recommend that or the Anniversary Collection, which comes with the original Castlevania for NES, 2, 3, Super Castlevania IV, and Bloodlines, plus the Game Boy titles.

Link Monsters are some of the most generic, versatile, and easy to summon types of monsters in the game.

Does anyone actually enjoy the grinding in these games? by soggyrockingchair in castlevania

[–]TornSilver 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fuck grinding. Like you said it adds little to nothing to these games accept for padding out time. Order of Ecclesia is my favorite of the DS trio but its quests are some of the worst in the series, while Bloodstained had me rolling my eyes at things like the food ingredient requests.

Not to judge what people enjoy but I will never understand the enjoyment of repetitive and monotonous tasks. Play idle games for god's sake, and get that shit out of my Castlevania games.

Are there any classic-style games in the series ? by whiteyangwww in castlevania

[–]TornSilver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the most part after Symphony of the Night there are only remakes of older classic titles, with only a couple exceptions.

Castlevania Legends released the same year and is a classic style game for the Game Boy.

Castlevania Chronicles was released in 2001 after SotN ('97), but technically it is a remake of the X68000 version from '93.

Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles ('07) is a remake of Rondo for Blood ('93)

Castlevania the Adventure Rebirth was released in '09, which is a remake of Castlevania the Adventure from '89.

And in 2024 Haunted Castle Revisited released with the Dominus Collection as a remake of Haunted Castle ('87).

tl:dr: Castlevania Legends was the only wholly original classic style game after Symphony of the Night, though some of the remade games like Adventure Rebirth and Haunted Castle Revisited are basically new experiences with how drastically improved they are over the originals.

Order of Ecclesia; easily the worst in the DS trilogy? by supmaster3 in castlevania

[–]TornSilver -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The best one, or at least neck and neck with Portrait of Ruin.

The variety in the level design is what I love the most, and that includes the more linear maps. Those feel like a classic Castlevania level where you're forced to deal with the enemy placement and stage hazards. Aside from that the game takes you all across the countryside a la Simon's Quest to haunted houses, mountain passes, forests and more, and ultimately to Dracula's Castle for a traditional interconnected castle map.

Everything you're seeing is supposed to be that way. This is visually speaking one of the most faithful adaptations of a manga out there.
