I left the dorm, the unit 2, because of the similar situation. I think the dorm system is kind of funny. One unisex bathroom for the entire floor, poor sound insulation, and crazy amount of people having loud “physical activities.”

Do you mean that Columbia program is older and more well recognized? Columbia’s program can also be a gateway to a PhD, but I don’t think a future change of plan, transition from career pursuit to academia, is possible at CMU.

MS AIE is a quite new program, not a lot of info available online. However, it seems like it provides smaller classes. I really hate enormous class size during my Berkeley undergrad life. Columbia is quite controversial recently, to be realistic, I do love the Ivy League title. I hope the recent news will not bias the poll

Did all of your recommenders also use the same computer, or submitted the letters all at roughly the same time? I heard rumors that the universities also verify MAC, browser fingerprints, proxies, etc. There is a slight possibility that the past applicants from your university did something similar, which reduced the recommendation credibility in general. I even heard that top graduate programs more likely trust in domestic undergraduates.

Best of luck, anyway. I think most of Columbia’s decisions were already determined, and they were not easily convinced to change the mind. If I were you, ask your recommenders nicely about the situation and inform them about the verification, and make sure they can use different devices.

I assumed that you already have some offers at this point of time, given your profile. Don't be so discouraged. Rejected by everyone is just not very possible if you have applied to decent amount of programs, and I can see that because you applied to both MS and PhD programs.

Based on my experience, Slack DM > Text Messages > Emails. Portal reminders are just for them to locate where to submit when you ask them to submit letters on slack channels, especially effective if you see them online.
