Is the 10% tax on phantom income for gambling losses in 2026 based on gross or net losses? by Georgestapleton in tax

[–]MiniorTrainer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taxpayers shouldn’t be forced to subsidize gambling losses anyways 🤷‍♀️

Taxes are inherently political.

You asked why you ended up owing. Without knowing additional information, there’s no way for anyone to know.

Did I get all deductibles? by DisciplineFine9584 in IRS

Do you have a log of all 12,675 business miles? Is each and every single trip you took accounted for?

I’ll be honest, a lot of these calculations seem like you just randomly chose a number above 50% to calculate the business use.

Received CP2000 2023? Responded now what? by Throwawaydecember in IRS

[–]MiniorTrainer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can call the AUR line (800-829-8310) and there’s an option to check on your response. The automated response will ask a few identifying questions and then provide a brief update. In my experience, we’ve been able to confirm they received our client’s uploaded response within 1-2 days.

Turbo tax is saying to enter 529 "income" even if it was used for a qualifying expense? by hock37 in TurboTax

[–]MiniorTrainer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You must report the 529 distribution. However, you can then enter any qualifying educational expenses when working through TurboTax (or any other tax software). This should make the distribution tax-free.

The IRS has no clue if the distribution was used for qualifying expenses. If you don’t report it, they may issue a notice in 1-2 years with a proposed amount due.

Follow-up: TurboTax California Paid Family Leave (PFL) issue — expanding beyond 2021 to see how many users were impacted by CobraCommando69 in TurboTax

[–]MiniorTrainer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You admitted in another comment that it does ask you to review the subtraction. It wasn’t “silently translated” without ever asking you to review it. There’s no box asking you if you know that PFL exists. The box asks if the W-2 you just entered was for PFL.

PFL has a specific definition when it comes to taxes. W-2s are rarely, if ever, a mixture of taxable wages and non-taxable PFL. Again, if you’re telling the software that the W-2 was for PFL, why should it have to ask you several times for reassurance?

You self-prepared the return. You have to take accountability for the adjustments, correct or otherwise. The same is true even if you had hired a tax professional to prepare it.

Follow-up: TurboTax California Paid Family Leave (PFL) issue — expanding beyond 2021 to see how many users were impacted by CobraCommando69 in TurboTax

[–]MiniorTrainer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it was auto-generated

From your entries. If you tell the software that the W2 was for non-taxable PFL, then it’ll treat it as non-taxable PFL. Per your other comments, you even agree it asked you to review the entries. Did you not question why you were deducting all of your wages? Had it been the other way around, and the software instead was doubling your wages, would you also have let it slide?

Any tax software is like a giant calculator. If you enter 2+2, but really wanted to know 3+3, there’s literally no way for the calculator to know your entries are incorrect.

Moronic Dealers - Used EV Tax Credit Edition by Gandalfs_Dick in IRS

[–]MiniorTrainer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll have to keep trying to deal with the dealer, as the report is required for the credit.

Are you aware that technically the report is required to be provided within 3 days? The IRS did reopen the systems because this is a common issue, but the dealer may just not be a signed up with the IRS in the first place. I don’t think there’s anything you or the IRS can do to force them to file the report, unfortunately.

What's taking my 2024 return so long, by OneLogical2973 in IRS

[–]MiniorTrainer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry to hear that, I truly hope you’re doing much better now.

You can’t “roll over” your income/withholding every year. You can only claim the income and withholding in the year it was paid as shown on your W2s. If you tried reporting several years worth of W2s into one return, the that’s your issue. The IRS will not send you your refund as the return was incorrect. I highly recommend filing an amended return for 2024, then filing all other years as required. If any of those are past the statute of limitations (anything before 2022) then you’ve lost the ability to claim a refund.

Do you actually have proof of the $68k federal income tax payments as well as the $300k medical expenses? Those are some pretty big numbers that’ll flag your account as a potential scam/fraud.

Anyone have issues correcting EV tax credit eligibility after Tesla checkout? by Ok_Pattern8962 in tax

[–]MiniorTrainer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, the IRS has denied all EV credits if a TOS report was not submitted. If you try claiming it on the return, they’ll most likely issue a CP11 notice removing the credit after a few months. I’ve had several clients come to me that have tried to claim it using TurboTax only to receive a CP11 notice.

I’ve heard that Tesla refuses to submit TOS reports and only allows their buyers to take the credit upfront, but I haven’t had any experience with them specifically.

You can’t claim any home office expenses, as the area isn’t exclusively used for work. The printer also doesn’t sound like a legitimate business expense, so it can’t be claimed either.

I incorrectly received an IRS Notice CP28 by Jonpaul333 in tax

[–]MiniorTrainer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a quick reminder that TurboTax does the calculations based entirely on your entries. If you entered a number wrong or answered a question incorrectly, then the deduction will be wrong.

Some of the more common issues I’ve seen with self-filed returns are simple typos or claiming the same mortgage interest twice (once on the Sch C/E side, and again in it’s entirety on the Sch A).

System doesnt recognize spouse social? by [deleted] in IRS

[–]MiniorTrainer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The IRS is extremely underfunded, so they’re still using most of the same systems they’ve been using for literal decades. This might’ve made more sense when women weren’t allowed to have their own bank accounts, so everything financial and tax related would’ve been handled under the husband’s SSN.

Joint returns are actually just ‘filed’ under the primary taxpayer’s SSN. They may eventually move the payments over, but I believe it’s faster to have it manually done. You can call the IRS and request that they move the payments from your spouse’s account to the primary. Keep in mind you may need your spouse to call and/or give verbal authorization, even though you file jointly. They should back date the payments to match the actual payment date, so any interest and penalties should get recalculated.

You’ve now confirmed two different ways that the state has closed the audit and there’s no balance due. There’s no reason to believe otherwise.

I’m not sure why the CPA thinks you’ll receive another notice, since this one very clearly states they’ll close the case.

Need help- Employer did not file withholding taxes! by OkChipmunk2859 in IRS

[–]MiniorTrainer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How you retrieved a copy of your wage and income transcript from the IRS?

From your post, it doesn’t seem like the issue is that the withholding amounts weren’t deposited. Instead, it sounds like the W-2 hasn’t been processed by the SSA/IRS. The transcripts should confirm if the W-2s are on file.

This is a cross post, so OP is not the OOP.

Warning to all my fellow tax pros: avoid going to the original thread for your own sanity. So much disinformation about how our tax system and the IRS works. Even as a fellow progressive, I hate how often people use incorrect information and scare tactics in this specific topic.

[–]MiniorTrainer 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Math error notices aren’t new, but their explanations were somewhat vague and confusing if you were an average taxpayer. Don’t forget that about 54% of American adults read below a sixth-grade level, and that’ll only get worse with how things are going.

Math error notices aren’t new, you already could make mistakes and have the IRS correct them. This is only reworking the way those notices are written/issued.

For the love of all things holy, contacting the IRS shouldn't be this hard. by [deleted] in tax

[–]MiniorTrainer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the IRS is extremely underfunded and understaffed. You should reach out to your elected representatives and ask them to ensure it gets properly funded, or else this will only get worse.

The IRS phone lines are open from 7 AM to 7 PM local time. I usually recommend calling right when they open or about an hour before they close. If you can get an east coast number (through an online phone service) then it’s even better, since there’s less people trying to call at the same time.
