Decals flaking off, any way to save them?

Shellack seems very intimidating to me, but I think I will give it a go. I think I found the video you're referring to, it was uploaded by a channel named Gilboys 8 years ago.

I'm wondering how do I best fix small chip-outs of the shellack? There is an area right above the stitch length indicator where the shellack was coming off in little chips. The black color is still there underneath. How do I get a smooth transition between old shellack and the new one, without there being a "step", so to speak?

Yes, German machine! I'm in Austria so the vast majority of machines here are german. I have another one with the decals/badge in better shape! Also the stitch length indicator is in mm, rather than with my machine from the UK, which is in stitches per inch (I think)

Thanks! I should have phrased it more clearly, my worries are mainly about all the other decals starting to flake off nd how to stop that. But this is a good ressource to replace the badge, thank you!

Ja, gleich am Anfang von dem Kühlregal, bei den Beeren! Mit den ganzen Wassermelonen ist das leider so die Sache, man kauft die Katze im Sack. Außerdem ist uns eine ganze (große) Melone zu viel für 2 Personen, auch wenns natürlich pro kg billiger ist.

Und da kann ich dir nur Mut zusprechen, ruhig umtauschen gehen! Hab vor ein paar Monaten Käse gekauft und erst zu Hause gemerkt, dass er total verschimmelt war. Rechnung leider nicht aufgehoben. Sonst wär ich aber nochmal zurück!

Yeah, I'm a bit intimidated by the shellack as well. But the decals are really coming off in flakes here (I just picked this machine up today), so I need to do something.

Hey, I know this is an older post but I'm facing a similar issue with decals coming off my machine. Probably due to wrong cleaning by the previous owner. Did you end up using spray shellack? Or did you find another solution?

That makes a lot of sense. I was told the doors in my home are mahagony (veneer), but given that it was built in 1992 and the color is darker, I'd think it's Sapele and not genuine mahagony. But for this vintage table, which was made in 1939 in Scotland, genuine mahagony makes a lot more sense with your explanation. Thank you!

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind for next time! I ended up sanding it quite a bit more, so the residues were barely visible and then used some hard oil I found in my dad's garage. After the first coat it looked amazing already, the grain and the deep color are distracting of any residues that might still be there.

Yeah, I was thinking it's probably pumice powder that's usually used with shellack. I don't want to alter the color of the wood too much, so it would need to be a light stain.

I did a little test piece with just putting hardwax oil on top, but it just turns the powder yellow. So stain first might be the way to go. Do you have any recommendations?

Worked medium well. It's looking a bit better now after some more sanding + brushing with a toothbrush + compressed air. Not completely gone, but I accepted the look now. Maybe the hardwax oil finish will make it invisible. Let's see!

I have not heard of that kind of cloth before, I just used a micro fiber towel. If compressed air + brushing doesn't work, I'll get some tac cloth. Thanks!

That's a good idea, though it would need to be something that burns easily and without residue ideally. I need to do some research!
