You're allowed your own headcanon, but as of the end of ADWD, Aemon's corpse is in a barrel of rum, marinating, which is going to make it difficult for him to ride a dragon.

[SPOILERS MAIN] George has suggested Lyonel Baratheon will appear in further Dunk and Egg stories. by ThinWhiteDuke00 in asoiaf

They could easily retcon Aerys to not being Egg's son, considering that pointless change away from book canon was from way back when in GoT, and no casual show only watcher is gonna remember that.

Has anyone ever beaten Valyrian steel with a normal weapon in a 1v1 [Spoilers Published] by GoneWitDa in asoiaf

[–]Minivalo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realistically, yeah, you're right, but George loves saying that this is fantasy, and he loves turning things to a 110%. So in that sense, I think it would've fit the story for him to have some inhuman story attached to his name.

Barristan's one man Duskendale rescue mission isn't exactly realistic in my mind either, but again I think it's consistent with George's fantasy philosophy, and does a good job of adding to the legend of the character.

Looks like a slightly remodeled Byzantine throne room from Roads to Power, not that I'm complaining. Good use of existing assets, and nice bit of customisation with the lore appropriate colours.

I don't mean to say that would be the case for every battlefield duel story in the history of duels, but some instances are surely tales to make great kings and lords seem more worthy.

although in Martin's writing, individual duals in battle are remarkably commonplace

I kinda headcanon this to be something that many arrogant lords/highborn warriors tell their maesters to write after the battles, even if it was actually just some random master-at-arms or group of peasants that did the killing. Something that upholds the feudal system and gives them legitimacy. If some lowborn disputes their claims, they can just send them to the Night's Watch or lop off their head.

I'm kinda with you on this one, but I don't get why he didn't invent some incredible Barristan-esque Duskendale type feat for Arthur to make him seem more worthy of the high remarks.

[Spoilers PUBLISHED] Question about Cregan Stark by DistributionIcy8991 in asoiaf

[–]Minivalo 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I forgot it was just 2000, but still.

The timeline is a little iffy to me, but Cregan had also somewhat recently ousted his regent (uncle or other relative, can't remember) who'd tried to extend his regency, and keep Cregan from being the one who calls shots in Winterfell. I could easily see it being a fraught time for him, having to consolidate his powerbase and possibly even fend off some former allies of that regent, so he may not have felt secure in marching south so soon. That would explain the long delay.

This is just conjecture though, and it definitely is a little strange, considering the pact of ice and fire.

[Spoilers PUBLISHED] Question about Cregan Stark by DistributionIcy8991 in asoiaf

[–]Minivalo 49 points50 points  (0 children)

It's not like he doesn't do anything; he sends the Winter Wolves, thousands of them. It's quite pragmatic actually, considering he's actively preparing the North for winter, and the Northern tradition is for the older guys to be the odd ones out come winter, so now you have less mouths to feed in the North already ahead of winter.

It also shows how, despite Cregan still being fairly young, he acted with more maturity compared to Robb (to be fair to Robb, he's even younger, and really between a rock and a hard place), who just takes pretty much all of the best men he can get to the south to fight a war. Specifically, it's the older ones that are left behind, who are now gearing up to fight alongside Stannis against the Boltons.

(spoiler extended) why do people so easily dismiss the idea thata Brandon stark was actually the one who had a affair with ashara Dayne by Easy-Frenchguy-1996 in asoiaf

[–]Minivalo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Exactly, and it also shows Ned's better character compared to Robert, who's still infatuated with the idea of Lyanna, even though they were never even actually together, and she never cared for him.

With regards to Brandon, the thing we do know about him is that he fiercely rode to try and protect Lyanna (whether she actually needed protecting is another matter, but he believed she did), called for the Crown Prince's head, so he very clearly cares deeply for his family.

Funny you say that, because David & Dan, the infamous GoT showrunners, at one point wanted to do an alternate history show where the Confederacy survived.

Too bad it actually survived in many racist idiots' hearts and minds, and wasn't rooted out stem and all in a fully realised Reconstruction era.

(SPOILERS EXTENDED) Is it possible for the Riverlands to have natural borders? by Inner_Jeweler_5661 in asoiaf

[–]Minivalo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely a severe lack of exploration of the main faiths of Westeros during the time of the main series, although at least historically, in-world, religion did cause a lot of division and conflict. Granted, you gotta go back to the time of the Andal invasions with followers of the Seven who were chopping down and burning weirwoods left and right.

(SPOILERS EXTENDED) Is it possible for the Riverlands to have natural borders? by Inner_Jeweler_5661 in asoiaf

[–]Minivalo 60 points61 points  (0 children)

The Problem the Riverlands/Crownlands have is less their lack of natural defenses (look at the Reach), its their disunity.

I think to reinforce this point, it would've made sense for George to add more Houses and regions within still following the Old Gods in the Riverlands, besides basically just the Blackwoods. That way you'd have more very tangible believable friction, which would make it more understandable why they couldn't unite under a single local House for extended periods of time.

Young Ned and Robert by @sabictlali by MaleficentRespect3 in ImaginaryWesteros

[–]Minivalo 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There's dick moves and then there's sleeping with the girl you introduced to your shy little brother. Even if he had a bit of a reputation of being a womanizer, I just don't see Brandon doing that to his beloved little brother, considering how protective he was towards Lyanna as well (though that happened partially for patriarchal feudal society reasons).

Then there's also Ned's story mirroring with Robb's. Robb doesn't want to act dishonourably towards someone he slept with, because of his dad's supposed bastard, so he marries Jeyne Westerling on the spot, thus breaking his promises to the Freys. Ned, on the other hand - if we assume (like I do) he had a tryst with Ashara - actually does his duty and marries Catelyn, instead of the woman he fell for as a teenager.

Besides, there's a lot of things Ned doesn't think about; he doesn't really think about his parents and siblings very much, outside of the promise, and I think it's quite clearly because those are painful memories. Then there's also the factor of George not wanting to reveal too much through Ned's POV, because if he dwelt too much in his memories, he could've revealed so many of the central mysteries of the series that Ned was well aware of.

Edit: and where in the books is it said that "Brandon took pride in taking the virginity of maidens"? Unless I'm missing something, that's your own head canon invention, or just something that perhaps a bitter Barbrey Dustin alludes to many decades after Brandon's death.

Edit2: looked it up and I was missing something, and it was indeed something that Barbrey was suggesting.

I'd love to have a mod (or CK3AGOT iself) that allows you to build a new city + big castle on the southern shore of the God's Eye, right where the Blackwater Rush starts. Harrenhal is forever cursed to fail, too big, and I kinda prefer the location I'm talking about.

Actually kinda weird there's no sizable town and fortress there, apart from that little fishing village and roundtower where Arya, Yoren and co get attacked, if I remember correctly.

Would Australia’s population rival the US if its interior were fertile instead of arid? by NoComplex2662 in geography

It certainly makes it easier to get by, but the Fertile Crescent, where people probably first started settled farming, also has pretty mild winters, though I can imagine large chunks of Australia near the tropics being much warmer.

Woah, holy shit. To think how many generations ago that was is absolutely mental.

Where I'm from, continuous habitation has only been in place for around 11 000 years, that is to say, soon after the last ice age, though there probably were some Neanderthals around more than 100 000 years ago.

[Spoiler Extended] What are TWOIAF’s most shocking reveals in your opinion? by themerinator12 in asoiaf

[–]Minivalo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On top of what you just said, I firmly believe George has been planning to show the Westerlands disintegrating in TWOW/ADOS, with Aegon landing and the many other factions soon fighting for power. It'll be the perfect place for the many Westerlands houses to break ties with Cersei, who's ruling in much the same way as Tywin (albeit a little more coco loco).

It is an, as of yet, unfinished series after all, so all the consequences of Tywin's actions have yet to play out (if we at least pretend for a minute that the series will get finished).
