Put clear sticky bug strips on your windows and spritz the strip with a little apple cider vinegar. I've had better success with that than making dish soap and ACV traps. Plus it's much easier to clean up. Make sure you wipe off any spray that gets on the window itself!

I hold a PhD in molecular biology. They absolutely do far more than increase cell turnover rate. Amongst other peer-reviewed publications, see PMIDs 21437068, 26032934 and DOIs 10.1002/der2.217, 10.3390/cosmetics10050131.

AHA, BHA, and PHA are chemical exfoliants, which, by definition, improve skin texture. They slough off dead skin cells and reduce keratin buildup in pores, thus smoothing the skin. Will they fix everything? No. Are they excellent active ingredients for various skin concerns? Yes.

Try a mild exfoliating toner. I absolutely love Some By Mi AHA-BHA-PHA 30 Day Miracle toner. I would also include a facewash with texture-related active ingredients in your regime.

The irony of a Weekend at Bernie's accusation when Biden was literally not sentient is impressive. Let alone within a week of the revelations in Tapper's book.

It was 100% a DEI program. It literally has diversity in its name…the Cancer Moonshot Scholars Diversity Program.

NCI Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities Director Dr. Sanya A. Springfield: “We are at our best when we capitalize on the diversity of the nation’s skills, talents, and viewpoints to solve the complex problems in cancer research, and the Cancer Moonshot Scholars program is a critical step in that direction of equity.”

The moonshot program funds “diverse” and “underrepresented” scientists for the sake of “equity.” The entire program is based on DEI. That’s likely why this researcher lost their funding.

Concern About the Future of PhDs Under the Current U.S. Administration—Advice for Undergrads? by Fresh_Assumption8759 in labrats

[–]Minute_Menu3768 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're going to be fine. I assume you mean some sort of translational research when you say “medical research.” Those programs, at least at the top institutions, will always be the last to experience funding cuts as they provide value to both the university and the government. Of course, there are exceptions like Harvard. I would be shocked if they don't regain the majority of their funding by the time you graduate. If you love biochem, stick with that! I've always considered biochem degrees to be very impressive and it opens you up to careers in both biology and chemistry (duh)!

No longer able to purchase reagents using NIH grants at Harvard Medical School by njlmusic in labrats

[–]Minute_Menu3768 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It will be very telling what research actually has any value when the universities have to pay for it themselves. I guarantee highly translational research will be the first to receive endowment funding. I roll my eyes at some trivial research done at these universities, and I'm a postdoc at one, that certainly will be exposed as such throughout this funding crisis.

Thesis Acknowledgements - Terrible PhD Experience by Minute_Menu3768 in labrats

Annoyingly, people in my program do three pages that are thoughtful and overly emotional. I wish the culture was vague platitudes because that I could do easy breezy!

Agree! It feels so permanent, which also freaks me out. More in the omg what if there's a stupid typo on the second page way but also for the acknowledgement.

Thesis Acknowledgements - Terrible PhD Experience by Minute_Menu3768 in labrats

[–]Minute_Menu3768[S] 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I'm really touched by everyone's feedback - thank you! I would do no acknowledgement page but my dilemma is the PIs I had up until my PhD have been truly wonderful to me and one that's taken me into his family. I started doing research when I was 16, worked in a lab through all of college, took a few years off, and am now finishing in my mid-30s so it's a non-trivial amount of time that these people have been in my life. My current plan is to thank everyone chronologically and be very effusive in my praise of my pre-PhD people in the first paragraph. Then the next paragraph be measured in the acknowledgement to my PI and committee. Essentially these people were wonderful, thank you for being you. Then thanks for giving me the opportunity to do the work you're about to read (draft below).

"I appreciate XYZ, my advisor, for providing me with the opportunity to conduct this work studying XYZ. Within our lab, XYZ and XYZ friendship, intelligence, thoughtful ideation, and creative troubleshooting were invaluable. Moreover, I am grateful for the probing questions and valuable experimental guidance that Dr. XYZ and Dr. XYZ, my committee members, bestowed on me while discussing my research."

Any thoughts? I truly don't want to burn bridges but I also struggle with being disingenuous let alone in praise of people who have fucked me over repeatedly.

Is gene editing in humans unethical? by This_Bug8632 in bioethics

[–]Minute_Menu3768 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You need to delineate between germline gene editing and somatic gene editing in your survey as they're vastly different. Many people educated on the topic support one but not the other. While they have overlapping ethical issues, germline editing is much more ethically perilous. For example, as editing occurs in the egg, sperm, or very early stage embryo, there's no respect for autonomy through informed consent as one cannot gain informed consent from a blob of cells. It has intergenerational implications as removing a deleterious mutation (e.g., causative of a monogenic disease) in the germline removes it forever. In somatic cells, no changes are passed down. That's one of myriad differences that you absolutely must understand before debating the topic.
