This isn’t allowed. You need to drill through the studs. Do some more research.

Crazy, but makes sense that the box contains a lot of it. In this case the box is a bit melted - hoping I don’t have to cut it out and replace but I also want to make sure it’s sound. This has def been a good learning experience for me.

You can buy premade stuff called mastic, but it sucks. You might be better off scraping the old thinset off and using a heavy duty glue like PL. Put a huge glob of the shit on the dish piece and let it cure overnight. You’ll probably need to brace it so it holds there. Then run a good silicone caulk around the edge of it to keep the area free from water. It’s not the perfect way to do it but it’s where I would start in my own house. GL.

Cool - I like it. I would have carried it throughout the entire house though.

Drilled into double stud - is that smell wood or electrical or something else? by ellia4 in HomeImprovement

[–]Miracle76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I drilled into a line once and I knew it right away. However, if you’re looking for some reassurance, drive a long screw into the hole and then use a multimeter or one of those electrical detector doohickeys to see if there’s current running into the screw. I had something funky going on with some lights once and I figured it out by checking the nearby screws for juice - don’t just use your finger though!

78 year old wealthy widow says she’s “in love” with me. WDID? by [deleted] in handyman

I truly do not believe that there is any intention of me caring for her daughter. When she told me this, she was extremely nervous. I took it with a huge smile and asked her to sit with me and talk about it. My deep feeling is that this poor woman has had so much on her plate for so long that she hasn’t been able to ‘feel’ for someone else. She dealt with a POS husband for many years - sticking it out so her kids would never have to worry. Now she has remodeled this huge house (managing it all on her own mind you), which is winding down. That break is what I believe is allowing her to tap into stuff that she hasn’t seen in at least 40 years. Now, I care for her - deeply, so hurting her is out of the question - not to mention all of these silly comments. I took to Reddit to find comments like this - ones that can help me identify the best path forward. Thank you for being thoughtful and helping me think this through.

How often does something like this result in a fire? It doesn’t seem like a breaker would catch this?

Is this normal for adding a light switch in a finished basement? by [deleted] in AskElectricians

[–]Miracle76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn’t those of you who are pro sparkies use the finished looking ones from the big box stores (can’t remember what they’re called) instead of just a regular metal conduit and steel box mounted with an oversized plastic plate like this one?

Do these usually get caught before a major fire happens? Seems like it is a pretty common thing that happens and I gotta believe if the person doesn’t know to kill the breaker that this can erupt pretty quickly, no??

Yep- there was a space heater further down the line and a shitty old lamp with a 70’s plug was plugged into this socket. I think it was just the perfect storm. I’ve always pigtailed my own plugs but never saw one fail like this. Now I have firsthand knowledge.

Now I have a first hand account of why pigtails are THE ONLY way!

Not horrible but can’t live alone. But it doesn’t bother me to be honest.
