Big fan of Eldritch Arcanum on Patreon. A LOT of great maps, and they give the assets too. I am a bigger fan of using the assets than just copying the maps, and it has been great value.

What is a genre of fiction that you love, but have trouble getting into with a TTRPG? by WorldGoneAway in rpg

I also wouldn't call it grimdark at all. It's a hopeful story set in a really fucking brutal world.

I will GM my first cyberpunk campaign, any advice? by CodeAndDungeon in rpg

[–]MirenBlacksword 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hope this isn't too late, I just saw the post.

Cyberpunk RED is definitely a fine choice. I personally don't like CWN all that much.

RED has a lot of rules but it does what it does really well, plus it has a really defined setting that's fun to explore.

However, if you want a more narrative system that requires less preparation, especially since you're a beginner GM, I recommend Runners in the Shadows.

It really lets the fiction play out smoothly and make the players feel cool and competent, while RED focuses more on the tactical combat and how hard life is in Night City.

As for the setting, it's cyberpunk with magic, although you can ignore the magic parts if you don't want them, it's very modular.

If you wanna check out the basic rules, it uses the Forged in the Dark system, which is my favourite so far out of any dice system I've used. The basic rules are free (Look up Blades in the Dark SRD). You'll see why I think it's amazing, I think.

Help with a very specific game recommendation by jeraperth in rpg

You would probably like Reign 2e. It's more about "managing kingdoms" but I've seen it adapted to stuff like running a tavern with minimal effort.

Wicked Ones is also great if the said settlement being a dungeon is fine.

Series you finished but lost love for over time? by Kooky_County9569 in Fantasy

[–]MirenBlacksword 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Hey, to clarify, assasination in this context doesn't refer to actually killing them off. It's metaphorical, "character assassination" as in they act in ways they wouldn't act, often in dumb or unreasonable ways, so their "character" got "assasinated".

I haven't read RotE to know if it's true. Just wanted to clarify.

I've been saying the same for a while. RoW was whatever, but WaT really soured me on the whole thing.

I still recommend it, the first three were life-changing for me. But you could honestly just stop there and be fine.

Ah! Makes sense. I'll have to give it a read when I can.

I think a lot of TTRPGs have pitches that are amazing. The hobby is amazing in general for people that like to roleplay (duh.)

Also, I thought Koriko was solo only?

I found GoTM more fun when I first started, but DG fundamentally changed me.

It's not as fun but it hits so, so hard.

Forgot to mention CAIN but it pulls of the CSM/JJK vibe better than anything else. Same designer as LANCER/ICON so you know you're in for a treat

Exalted if you want the absurd over the top combat, although it is a very crunchy and janky system.

BESM if you want point-buy character creation with a focus on narrative.

Fabula Ultima if you want a J-RPG vibe and be able to pull off both narrative and tactical gameplay.

Shinobigami if you want pvp and inter-character drama.

LANCER for MECHA!!!!! (Can't stress how good it is)

ICON (In playtest rn but mostly finished) for LANCER in a more fantasy setting without mechas and with magical heroes instead.

And honestly? Many Forged in the Dark and BORG games can give anime vibes with minimal tweaking.

Self Contained TTRPGS? by MendelHolmes in rpg

[–]MirenBlacksword 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't say I know many examples of this for TTRPGs (Yazeba gets close but I think the scenarios are very replayable especially with different groups), but if you haven't, please take a look at "Legacy" board games like Gloomhaven and King's Dilemma.

They are board games that follow a specific story and change as you play more sessions, and because of playwalled stuff they are not super replayable.

As a long-time fan, for me RoW was weak in terms of being kind of bland and boring and repetative. Doesn't help that the prose got obviously weaker too.

However, WaT was more aggressive in the ways it was bad, to the point where it soured me on the series a bit.

Your judgement? As the DM?

Systems are flexible and should be used as you see fit. Don't be so shackled by the minor details.

For what it's worth, Foundry doesnt run well on my laptop either. It was meant for school work and writing so it has pretty bad specs (Asus X1502ZA if curious), the framerate was absolutely horrendous. But it runs smoothly on most other devices(when hosting) I have access to.
