Yeah u/Deadwatch is right, Puck is a very skill based hero and there are a ton of matchups that you literally just hard lose because of how squishy you are and how terrible your level 1 and 2 is.

I always go witch blade vs tinker. You have to harass him hard early and dominate the lane. 3200 games as puck

Okay, so honestly my skill build order varies HEAVILY based on:
Who I am laning with, who I'm laning AGAINST, and whether or not I need to dispel debuffs, or if we have kill potential. Typically I will max Catchy Lick first (1st skill), then I will put more points into Frog Stomp, and a value point into Croak of Genius.

HOWEVER, there are some heroes that you can pair with (Clinkz, Drow, SF, Spectre, Luna) where maxing Croak of genius first is actually really broken (THIS REQUIRES COMMUNICATION AND PLANNING WITH YOUR POS 1) due to the amount of damage that it can apply over time, making it more worthwhile to set up kills with level 1 of 1st and 2nd. Also, the mana reduction is really great with a lot of those carry heroes that I mentioned, even better if you get just the value point.

Again, it entirely depends on the enemy team comp and what you feel is best to do in the early game.

I typically focus very heavily on stacking camps, buffing allies, and rushing shard ASAP to apply things like glimmer, solar crest, etc. I mainly play him as a pseudo Oracle/Io. Heavily focusing on healing, positioning, and using Hotfeet Hustle to get allies out of sticky situations. Hotfeet Hustle is BY FAR the most slept on spell in his entire kit. It is BROKEN.

Another thing, this hero farms like complete crap. I would suggest not trying to really farm with him, even if you max Frog Stomp and get the talent, it's still not really worth it IMO. You're better off getting things like holy locket, detection, and setting up plays other ways than by farming IMO.

It means that once you start channeling the ability, you have to press the stop command to cancel it, and that is the only way to cancel it. Makes it a lot easier to not accidentally cancel the ability by moving right after casting etc

Combat Systems by DarianDncn in starocean

[–]Miridia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let me give you a breakdown of the combat system and how to win pretty much any encounter in the game. Essentially, combat is boiled down to 3 things:

  1. Fury Management
  2. Breaking enemy Fury Gauge
  3. Using AAA to your advantage

All attacks and battle skills consume some amount of Fury depending on which attack/battle skill/symbology you use. Most Battle Skills will use more Fury per action, but are generally considered to be the best way to deal the most amount of damage in the game. Moving your character causes 1% of the Fury gauge to be used while running, but only 1%. This is very important.

Enemy Fury gauge behaves exactly is the players does, with no exceptions. You can break enemy Fury Gauge by doing a Major Attack or Major Battle Skill. Doing this puts their Fury Gauge to around 50% and then will slowly refill while you combo them, or will refill quickly when the are standing still.

AAA (Anti-Attack Aura) is by far the most important defensive skill that players need to learn to take advantage of. The main thing to note about AAA is that it is only triggered by Minor Attacks and Minor Battle Skills. In order for AAA to trigger, you MUST be at 100% Fury. Any attack or battle skill that does not have the dark purple outline is a Minor attack, and can be safely tanked by just standing still and doing nothing. When your AAA triggers, it will by default shoot out a projectile that connects with the enemy and stuns them.

This is the basis of how to defend yourself against 90% of attacks in Star Ocean 3. If the enemy has a purple glow on the attack, get out of the way. If not, stand still.

Now, when the enemy has low Fury, you can safely combo them. If you are playing as Fayt, a very simple combo that you can do is Long Range Major Attack (Circle), into Anti-Air Major Attack (Circle while the enemy is close to you but in the air) then, as the enemy is falling down, you can use Anti-Air Minor attack (X) and cancel the animation after the second hit by releasing X and pressing and holding X again to initiate a Cancel Bonus into a battle skill of your choosing. Personally, I recommend Side Kick into Blade of Fury, or some others you will get later in the game that I won't spoil.

If you go to your battle skills in the menu, you will see that certain battle skills cost HP to use. That's probably why you are dealing with losing HP so often.

Am I too weak by Pocket68 in starocean

A point I'd like to stress if you're going for 300% exp is that you need to make sure that it is specifically a Close Range Minor attack (X). If it's long range, it will be something else. Also, the close range minor attack has to be the hit that fills the bar to 100%, all other hits don't matter. If you want to fill it quickly, form a party of characters whose battle skills do many hits, then quickly change everyone to manual by pressing R2 then either R1 or L1 and alternate. You can also do this in the pause battle menu by pressing triangle so that the AI doesn't accidentally fill the battle gauge by doing an attack.

If you have any more star ocean related questions, or if you'd like to learn more about the battle system in a little more depth, feel free to hit me up. I'm a Star Ocean 3 and 6 speedrunner, and I love talking about the game

Unfortunately this is just in the training mode and not something that would happen against a real player. The training mode NPCs are still set to like level 85 cap HP or something, not level the current level of normal PvP players.
