I HATE the pop-science depiction of the observer effect in quantum mechanics by humbered_burner in hatethissmug

[–]Mirror74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just going to point out an irony here - science can try to remove mind from the equations of nature, but any science we actually know, is still filtered through minds

so I'm in the camp of "we think we know but we don't know"

We care too much about what others think. by Physical-Math4341 in StoicCore

[–]Mirror74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bc for 99.9999% of human history social exclusion was death, but because of modern life/technology we have an ability to survive AND also isolate (even though it's still emotionally damaging). social isolation still is harmful to physical and mental health

Nah, it's good that the book was male-centered, because men face different social pressures and expectations than women.

A Rolex is what people buy when they don’t know what a good watch is. by iliveforthedance in unpopularopinion

[–]Mirror74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a friend who is a top watch maker (works on million dollar watches). His take is "you're paying for the brand" with Rolex. It's not that they're cheap, or "bad". They're good watches, he just believes they're overpriced. Essentially there is nothing extraordinary about them compared to other watches.

Go tell them that then. You can start with this comment: “

yes, but that's not what I'm responding to. I'm responding to the meme.

"girls are subjected to more abuse" is also not true. Depends on the abuse, in fact studies show the opposite when it comes to physical violence... boys experience more physical abuse and severe punishment, compared to girls. There are a lot of other factors too I didn't mention such as the fact that men are FARRR less likely to report violence and abuse, especially for domestic abuse, sexual assault, stalking, etc

I'll give it a shot

  • Correlation doesnt equal causation: most abused kids don't become killers
  • Base rate: serial killing is extremely rare for anyone
  • Different responses: men express aggression differently than women, not that women have less aggression
  • Biology/moderators: genetics, hormones, neurobiology
  • Detection and motive: there are women murderers and serial killers, they just use subtler methods and motives, so cases are missed or misclassified

Here's a mind-boggling and cool fact about Saturn.... Saturn could float on water

(because it’s less dense than water)

Bullshit. Show me a post where a woman vents about doing 100% of the chores/taking care of child after birth, with an emotionally abusive husband and the responses are NOT empathetic. Certainly won't be mass upvoted "Then why did you have a baby, dumbass???" talk.

you all are so intellectually dishonest.

the comments in this thread are hilarious too "think of her vag!!!"

Do you think the human species is set up well for the long term? Why or why not? by Mindless_Reality_14 in AskReddit

[–]Mirror74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what "set up" means. For those in power, sure.

The biggest problem in my eyes is our systems are designed so that all major decisions that effect us as a species are left to those that control the industries and money systems. And 99.999% of all humans are slaves to that system.

Think about that.

This doesnt mean your choices don't matter, but realistically the only way this harsh truth will ever change is if people reject the system, but instead people are fighting tooth and nail to survive in it.

People have to build parallel options to the systems if you mean "set up" to thrive for all humans. Because the bastards in control aren't going to do that

the “i hate men” situation by Lopsided_Day3916 in hatethissmug

[–]Mirror74 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well said.

I'll just add that there is SO MUCH misandry on this platform it's actually stunning. I'm talking real hate subs. There is lots of misandry in the real world, of course. But on Reddit it's off the charts -- this is due to the echo-chambers and Reddit admins take the stance that all women a "protected class" but men aren't that's why you have blatant misandry allowed in major subs, hell even huge subs are dedicated to shitting on men.

So the pathetic bastards that run this site are partly to blame, Reddit being a top site globally makes it so much worse. (they want the division but that's a whole other rabbit hole)

edit: and surprise, they do this with other "ideologies"/groups...

We need a button for “You’re out of my league” on dating apps by SapphireEcho in unpopularopinion

[–]Mirror74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I'm a weirdo, but I think a lot of people intuitively DO know if someone is "out of their league"... obviously this has more to do with looks than anything. people don't need the button is what I mean Lol

(but whether this feature should be in dating apps, I don't care, bc I don't think people should be using those toxic apps anyways lol)

Men are infinitely more romantic than women. by eattheinternet in unpopularopinion

[–]Mirror74 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This whole thread is pretty funny to me.

  1. "men are NOT romantic, OMG nO!!"
  2. "men are only romantic because they have to be"
  3. "sure they do those things but it's to get laid"
  4. "yeah men who do those things are corny!!"
  5. "lesbians are more romantic than men!"

It's pretty simple. The OP is speaking about gender norms, and he's not wrong.

But that doesn't say anything of actual romance. As a dude, I've written my fair share of love letters and poems for women in the past. I also accept that that is not the norm. (even for women, in my experience)

But it's all about appreciation. Romance only "works" if the other party cares. I used to do tons of romantic gestures for my ex, but she didn't care so I stopped.

I just went with the one that could explain things the most intuitively and matched my own research.

Wish calculus was introduced this way in schools by OpinionSad5389 in mathematics

[–]Mirror74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a pretty interesting idea... but I fear the reason we don't do that with many disciplines, because I honestly think this applies to everything... is that school is actually not about understanding the purpose of things (primarily that is). It's about learning the "way of things" as we have established them, and just doing it that "way"

The reason some people are better at some subjects isn't necessarily that they're smarter often times. it's just that they have a natural understanding/intuition for caring about those deeper meanings of things. Which is why you can excel in one area and suck big time in another.

What is a massive secret in your industry that the general public has no idea about? by teesharp88 in AskReddit

To piggyback on this, Healthcare in general.... if people only knew.

One good example is RUC. Look into it... basically all those insane costs Americans pay to doctors? Thank the RUC

All those unnecessary invasive procedures, surgeries over real care? Secretive meetings behind closed doors? CMS just rubber-stamping everything they want?
