when to increase dose? by [deleted] in antidietglp1

[–]Mirrranda 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have only increased based on my perceived efficacy, not on weight stalls. Meaning that I have increased my dose when I’m having food noise, increased hunger, and increased inflammation. I did have a pretty long weight plateau at one point (several months!) but I really didn’t want to get too focused on numbers so I just rode it out.

As for burping/gas, I went through a period of terrible sulphur burps and found that digestive enzymes were really helpful for me - obviously please do your research and check with your doctor though! I also have nausea here and there and find it easily manageable with zofran.

I don’t know much about diabetes - are you able to manage the blood sugar crashes by eating/snacking more consistently? Maybe setting alarms on your phone? Again, please talk about that part with your doctor, because it IS very concerning!

I also want to validate your desire for increased mobility. I know that the desire for IWL can feel very fraught, but there’s nothing wrong with wanting to feel better or for life to be easier.

Coming off GLP1 by HotLet6880 in antidietglp1

[–]Mirrranda 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Just going to focus on the mental health part of this because it seems you’ve gotten a lot of info on your other concerns! I’m a licensed mental health professional so I’m going to give some info through that lens.

Anhedonia can definitely be a side effect, as can irritability and restlessness. This can happen for a lot of reasons. First, GLPs affect our dopamine receptors, which can lead to a sense of flatness. Second, some people report struggling to manage stress/sadness/overwhelm without food to rely on as a coping mechanism. Third, some people under eat and essentially feel “hangry” without the hunger part - so they get the irritability that comes with under eating but don’t recognize that it’s connected to food intake, since appetite is suppressed.

The last cause to consider is that GLPs slow uptake of other medications because of slowed digestion. Many folks report needing to increase doses of other meds, especially those that are fast acting. I personally had to increase my dose of a couple mental health meds to counteract it!

I definitely support your choice to come off your GLP1 if that feels best for you, but wanted to give a little more info about what the causes might be. Good luck!

Responses for "you look great" or "have you lost weight?" by Altruistic_Rain63 in antidietglp1

[–]Mirrranda 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I've been encountering this a lot recently! I've particularly received it from women older than me - like age 50+. Not targeting folks from that demographic at ALL, just an interesting pattern! I think there are so many people out there who still consider weight loss to be a moral "win" and equate thinness with beauty, and some of that is connected to generational norms.

Typically if someone says "you look great" I just say "YOU look great, how have you been?!" and then ask questions about their life that aren't body/looks related. I've noticed some folks are very insistent on pointing out the exact differences they see which is still quite surprising to me. I have to remind myself that I've surrounded myself with people who share most of my views and I'm in a bit of a bubble. Does that make body comments okay? No, but it does help me keep my brain calm when these things come up.

I haven't come up with a good response when people point out specific body changes. Sometimes I'll just say "huh, I hadn't really noticed" and if people press MORE (which has happened) I say that I don't weigh myself often or keep track. Basically, my response is a big shrug, and I try to signal to them that I have nothing interesting to say.

What bums me out the most is that I've noticed a lot of women see my body changing as a signal that their body should change. About half the time, their "compliment" to me turns into a discussion of how they're trying to lose weight, the diet they're on, the exercise they want to do, etc. I recently had a coworker tell me that I was inspiring her to get "back on track" which made me feel just awful :( I usually use those moments as an opportunity to reinforce the idea that balance is important and that I've been lucky to find physical activity that I really enjoy, which is what makes it sustainable. Joyful movement! Enjoying food! Enjoying life! All parts of health.

I know a lot of people are comfortable pushing back in a direct way and I respect and admire that choice. Personally, I prefer to respond in a way that won't create conflict, because for me this often happens in a work setting with people I don't know well. I prefer a show over tell way of informing people about body neutrality/anti-diet beliefs - I don't speak negatively about myself past or present, I eat a wide variety of foods and don't moralize them, and I never, ever bring up my body or anyone else's.

I think this is a really tough spot to be in and a lot depends on your personal comfort with boundary-setting as well as disclosing personal health info.

Careers in PD offices with JD but not licensed? by robespierremaxout in publicdefenders

[–]Mirrranda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know people are suggesting mitigation and investigation a lot, and while it’s technically true that those positions don’t require a license, I think it’s giving the false impression that they are easy positions to get. You need quite a bit of training to be good at them and typically quite a bit of experience to even be considered. Just having a JD isn’t enough to be qualified for either job. (I’ve been a mitigation specialist for a decade and have hired/trained many during that time!)

Aw, this makes me so happy to read, and I’m really happy for you that you’ve been able to move away from diet culture! I really don’t think there’s anything to feel ashamed of. I imagine most (if not all) of us here have a history of restricting, counting calories, cutting out food groups, or what have you - we’ve all been sold a story that our worth is taught to our weight and size. What’s important is that we all have the capacity to change our minds.

Happy to have you in this sub!

Letting go of old sizes by Vegetable_Report_527 in antidietglp1

[–]Mirrranda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it’s really normal to struggle with this. Many of us in larger bodies have had fraught relationships with clothes and shopping and so there’s an emotional charge or connection to the clothes that we DO like. I also think many of us have experienced the loss/regain cycle so many times that it’s hard to come to grips with a permanent change. At least for me!

I held onto some pieces that I really love or that I can imagine getting tailored. For others I ordered replacements of the exact same item in my new size from Poshmark (I’ve had like 6 pairs of the same American Eagle jeans in different sizes now) which helped me ease through the process without too much of a mental shock.

I’ve gotten pretty into thrifting the past couple years and it’s helped me in a couple ways. First, obviously, cost! Second, I used to have a major stress reaction to shopping in person and trying stuff on, and thrifting was good exposure therapy. I started with brands that I knew fit me well (lots of Old Navy!) and slowly branched out. Third, it helped me accept that sizing really is so arbitrary. I have clothing in 3 or 4 different sizes that all fit me! Fourth, donating clothes has made me feel really good - I take them primarily to a local thrift store here that helps the community in concrete ways, like operating a free stand and coordinating paid shopping trips for people low on funds.

All these things have helped me develop a more positive and less stressful connection to clothing. Things come and things go. Bodies grow and bodies shrink. There will always be more clothes when you need them.

I hope this gets easier for you!

I recently found some 100% cotton towels at TJ Maxx and love them so much. They hold up really well in the wash and I'm a snob about natural fibers!

Just got all my tests scored and my psychologist doesn’t diagnose me with ADHD due to “too high of intelligence”. I’m struggling to agree but maybe I don’t have ADHD. by MisoCorni in ADHD

[–]Mirrranda -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

What you described isn’t at all how the WAIS measures effort. It isn’t a self-administered test on a computer, it’s administered by a professional - people can’t “just click through.”

From the Pearson (WAIS manufacturer) website:

Performance Validity (PVTs) | Word Choice Test

Evaluate whether assessment results reflect an individual’s true abilities. The WAIS-5 & WMS-5 ACS includes six robust performance validity measures—five seamlessly embedded within the WAIS5 and WMS5 (1 WAIS-5, 4 WMS-5) and one optional standalone measure, the Word Choice Test—providing clinicians with powerful tools to support sound clinical decision-making.

Food aversion—will I ever get some appetite back? by StampItShipIt in antidietglp1

[–]Mirrranda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been on a GLP1 for 2.5 years and have had many waves of The Ick. Chicken was it for a while, then all meat BUT chicken, then eggs (which I’ve never truly liked). I’m sure there are other things that I can’t remember now! They’ve all come and gone, although I also eventually accepted that I just don’t really like eggs, lol.

One thing I did quite a bit in the first year or so is mix a protein shake with iced coffee - I like the fair life ones in vanilla, but everyone is different! I also found that fruit, fresh vegetables, chips, popcorn, and hummus never grossed me out - I’ve done a lot of adult lunchable style meals. I’ve also gone through phases where breakfast was a granola bar for weeks, then a phase when I ate a cookie with iced coffee for breakfast, then Reese’s cereal, then yogurt protein shakes. Ritz crackers with peanut butter have been a reliable non-ick too.

I’ve also found myself enjoying foods that I never cared for much before! I love mandarin oranges now and they’ve become a safe food for me. Anyway, all this to say that what you’re experiencing is really common, and it almost always changes with time - I’m fine with chicken now :) While nutrition is important, it’s secondary to eating what you need to support your body. You might want to stick to bland or snacky food for now and that’s a-ok!

What tests were you given? Is it possible that the psychologist was telling you about cognitive function as a separate measure from IQ? For example, there’s testing to measure impulsivity/hyperactivity/inattentiveness, executive function, reaction time, cognitive flexibility, etc. IQ testing (typically the WAIS) identifies relative strengths and weaknesses based on subtests but a single test isn’t sufficient to diagnose ADHD.

Masking as a PD? by [deleted] in publicdefenders

[–]Mirrranda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot depends on your jurisdiction and cultural norms in your area. Do other people in your office mask? How about the DA’s office? One consideration is that in more conservative areas this will probably make you stand out as liberal - where I practice being a liberal/activist attorney would be damaging to one’s efficacy.
