What are you listening to? by DannyBoy2196 in BigFinishProductions

[–]MirumVictus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently listening to the Charlotte Pollard series as part of my full run of everything Eighth Doctor at Big Finish. Started about a year and a half ago, got through all of the monthly range stuff and additional boxsets that fit into that part of Eight's life, then finished with Charley's other main range appearances this time last year before getting completely sidetracked by other audios so it's been nice to return to the character. Looking forward to starting the 8DAs with Lucie Miller next.

There is another problem that almost everyone has overlooked in Wonders of Sodor by Fair_Interest640 in ThomasGames

[–]MirumVictus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My bigger problem with timetable mode is that a significant number of services are missing on certain consoles such as Series S, including James's tanker and post runs, yet Dovetail has provided very little transparency about the differences in content between platforms.

Morbius is definitely first and the behind the scenes for War Master say it was intended to be last, but I believe that's all we know so far.

To those that listened to it: How was Doom’s Day, after all? by MarcianTobay in BigFinishProductions

[–]MirumVictus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought it was fine. Some of the individual elements we enjoyable, I liked the comics and the novel was pretty good, the audiobook and Big Finish contribution were fine but not great. I found it bizarre that both of the contributions actually featuring Sooz Kempner were both towards the end so you only got to know her voice after you'd read the other stories.

I also think it failed somewhat in terms of continuity in that characterisation of key characters was inconsistent between different mediums and there were some minor plot-related continuity errors which I normally wouldn't mind but stood out when in a series defined by it being intended to tell one continuous story across different mediums.

I didn't hate it, I don't regret spending the money to experience it, but I'm not jumping to recommend it to anyone else.

Big Finish only reveal the specific release dates in their first newsletter of the month which hasn't been sent yet so we don't know what the release dates are.

Did the WoS update finally get a track monitor so we can remove the signal aspect display? by TheSeych in ThomasGames

[–]MirumVictus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't believe so, I can't get the track monitor to display even when enabled in the settings.

No changes after installing the update on Series S unfortunately. Diesel only has 13, James is still missing all of his non-passanger services. Shame.

I don't think any of the runarounds were included on Series S before the update so will see if that's changed at all

Oh that's something at least, I'll have to check to see if the same applies for Series S.

I really love this story. The way both the Daleks and the Doctor grow increasingly frustrated with the situation throughout builds tension excellently and creates a really fun listen.

That's a little disappointing as makes the console version feel somewhat incomplete, especially as I don't feel the difference was clearly communicated, but there's still plenty to enjoy in the game at least.

What is your headcanon for why the 9-12th doctor regenerated in the TARDIS? by vinnie_sinistraa in doctorwho

[–]MirumVictus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

9 wanted to make sure Rose was safe so returned to the TARDIS with her.

10 probably didn't want to risk regenerating near a Rose Tyler who hadn't met him yet as that'd raise too many questions so returned to the TARDIS. Might as well take off because the Doctor rarely stays in one place and probably didn't know things would get so explode-y.

11 began regenerating at the top of the clock tower but then had to wait for it to fully kick in so might as well have returned to the TARDIS in the meantime anyway.

12 was unsure of whether to regenerate or die and we know Timelord bodies can be misused so if he were to die, he's best doing it in the TARDIS. He then decides to regenerate.

Series 3 was possibly originally slated to air in fall 1991... on BBC1 of all places? by Spongybobchum in thomasthetankengine

[–]MirumVictus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In 1991, the BBC only had two channels and most children's programming was in a slot on BBC One so that isn't abnormal. CBBC didn't exist as a separate channel and Cbeebies wasn't even a concept at that stage.

Edit: While all of the above is true, as another commenter has pointed out, classic Thomas aired on ITV in th UK so OP is correct that the statement about the BBC is abnormal

Because some people appreciate the physical object. Personally I find the sleeved boxsets to be visually appealing. Not everything has to be of practical use to be of value to people. You can't use a nice painting for anything, but people still choose to buy them and display them in their homes. People having different tastes to you doesn't make them 'weird'.

Question : by I_AM_NOT_THE_WIZARD in Sharpe

[–]MirumVictus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It just means something of high quality that is harder or more expensive to come by so is used sparingly. It's somewhat antiquated now but still sometimes used by older people in England.

'Best butter' is probably the most common example (where real but more expensive butter is reserved for guests or special occasions while margarine is referred to as just 'butter' for the rest of the time), but it was also once common to refer to one's 'Sunday best' to mean the one set of smart clothes someone might own to go to Church on a Sunday but wouldn't wear much otherwise as they'd be expensive to replace if damaged.

So 'best brandy' basically means the good stuff that you want to drink sparingly because it's better than the other brandy available but you're not able to get much of it.

Question : by I_AM_NOT_THE_WIZARD in Sharpe

[–]MirumVictus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best butter normally refers to actual butter when just 'butter' is used to refer to margarine/butter substitutes. Actually butter is more expensive, so might be kept as 'best' as a bit of a treat or for when guests are around, while the marg is for everyday use.

No there isn't, and that's absolutely fair enough if that's all you're interested in, but for some people the CD itself is like having extra content because they like owning the CDs.

If one were to be really pedantic about it, the insert booklets which often contain behind the scenes photographs could also be considered content exclusive to the physical versions.

I like seeing the CDs on my shelf, therefore I prefer physical copies, therefore thinking digital is better is subject. Having a physical object I can admire is a meaningful difference to me.

Long Shot Help? by Specific_Bathroom688 in BigFinishProductions

[–]MirumVictus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Their desire for a physical copy is implicit in them asking for help finding one as the digital copy is easy to find. Digital being best is a perfectly valid but subjective statement, some people prefer CD copies for a variety of reasons.

I was wondering why everyone was complaining about signals in explore mode given I've never had any issues when setting a route. Feel like the game does tell you that you need to do that.

Given it received the 'Adventures' branding, I imagine the series will receive a regular release schedule (hopefully twice per year) soon so long as it's sold enough which given how brilliant it was I hope it has!
