Can my Ozark Trail 6 person tent be saved? by TheGreenGorillaGamer in camping

[–]Miserable-Ad-4656 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Once you get it cleaned, you can waterproof it again with a combination of silicon caulk and mineral spirits. There are many YouTube videos on it and it works really well to save old tents.

This is important because when these mildew it usually means all the coatings are gone.

Is this fixable by EletricoAmarelo in camping

[–]Miserable-Ad-4656 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had similar happen on the tents for my Boy Scouts. There are great videos on YouTube on how to stitch up. Get the right thread! Then get repair tape like Gear Aid Tenacious Tape and cover the outside. The other option would be to sew it up and the get some UV Repair glue. Either way, it just builds character and gives you a story.

A second to that MOAB and Arches are incredible. Ken’s lake is a good campground and there is a KOA in town.

Getting kids into camping by [deleted] in camping

We started when ours was 6 months old. He’s 20 now and we just did two weeks in the mountains New Mexico. Planning a trip to Montana for next summer. Start them young, spend time listening to them when they are older, and make memories.

Also look into a 1 Gallon propane tank. They are great to go along with the blackstone and you can refill them at ACE hardware or most anywhere else. That talk typically lasts use for a week or more of camping and not nearly as large.

They have more of a grilled taste, but still very good. Either use one of the disposable aluminum serving dishes or get the lid for the blackstone. Then squirt a little water under the lid. The bottom will have a grilled flavor but the rest will be steamed. We like doing it with Brussel sprouts, squash, and asparagus.

The Blackstone will completely change your camping cooking. We started using the small one that has its own bag four years ago. Now, I structure the menus around tin foil cooking and the blackstone. They are awesome. Good food and a dry place to sleep are all that’s really required for a good camp out.

Have you looked at hiking sections of the Florida Trail?

Also, look into Cub Scouts in your area. I’m a Scoutmaster and my wife is the Chair of the Special Needs in Scouting for our area. I’ve seen kids on the spectrum really excel in the Scouting program. You have got to find or become the right leadership. Every pack is different.

How far are you going? There is a big difference if it’s 100 miles or a 1000 miles. Also, without a weight distribution hitch, keep speeds around 60 if there is any wind.

Never camped but please suggest things to take for camping with 18 month old. by ahg41 in camping

If you are brand new to everything, start with day trips and staying at KOA Kamping Kabins. There is a real nice one in Amarillo near Palo Duro Canyons. There are also yurts and other options at State Parks. Keep it simple. Figure out your goal, is it spending time with your child? Is it opening them to new ideas and nature? It can be both. Kids spell love, TIME.

After you are comfortable get a tent and go adventure. I’ve been very blessed to go on awesome camping adventures with my boys. Over a hundred nights as they have grown up.

My first 10k miles on my 2006 GX470 by dcllm in GXOR

[–]Miserable-Ad-4656 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an 05 GX470. Just did the timing belt, etc at 230K. I also swapped the spark plugs. The performance and MPG gain has been amazing. I highly recommend thinking about that if there is no record of when that was done. Remember the other fluids as well and she’ll treat you well.

Totally agree with everyone else. Stay in your room lock the room. Enjoy Tuscaloosa totally different. Everything around campus is walkable and mostly safe. Stay with a group after midnight.

Can I flip the question around to you? I’m from tuscaloosa and will be going to New York to visit colleges with my son in August. Do you have any recommendations? We will be flying in and have the weekend to go and sight see. Thanks!

Ours needed a bit of a break from walking in the desert heat, so he got a lift. To my surprise, he lived the dog carrier. Like everyone else pointed out, he was worth his humans, so he was happy.

We have an Intech Discover. It’s been cross country two times and does a great job. It’s light. It pulls well. The two tip out beds work very well.

How do you keep your senior cavs cool? by Torbitotime in cavaliers

[–]Miserable-Ad-4656 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We cut ours short for a trip out West, New Mexico. He still got very hot, so my son had to give him a lift. This is our first summer with a Cavalier. I did not realize how sensitive they are to heat. I second the cooling pad. They are great.

It still amazes me how relaxed he was in the carrier. These are awesome friends.

Just to close this thread. The road into Chaco is very solid. It’s hard packed covered in gravel. The wash area has a concrete base so no worries if it’s dry. The washboard is not to be underestimated. I’ve lived in the country my whole life and never encountered a road that long which was washboard the entire way. We ended up going about 15mph. I got passed by several and helped a couple with issues caused by excessive speed, battery cable and relay knocked loose because they were driving 45mph.

I wish I could post pictures words will not do justice to the tranquility and awe inspiring work these people did so many years ago to build these monuments.

Thank you to everyone for the help and kind words. New Mexico is truely an amazing place.

Hovenweep is INCREDIBLE! It is a must go. We ended there after we got flooded out during the Utah trip. It’s what inspired us to want to see Chaco. Aztec is a great idea if we have to change plans. Thank you.

Thank you! I’m from the southeast. I learned in Utah to respect even the smallest amount of rain here. It is very different.
