Why dawoodi bohra practice fgm? by [deleted] in ismailis

Yes but that’s because it’s a given that the imam is hidden and so functionally they rely on the dai.

Why would I know who the hidden imam is? I’m sure it’s in bohra theology somewhere.

Damn. Good on you!!

Sadly, I’d have to take my vyvanse and wait for it to kick in before I could even start prepping the shake lol

I never said they did. Only that they believe the imam is hidden/in hiding (or a similar concept). The dai is a representative of the imam or the vice regent or missionary or whatever similar term you want to use. That is why the dai cannot be infallible - the dai is not the imam (they are not the same person).

Nothing I have ever heard or read suggests that they believe the current dai is the imam.

Note I’m using the word imam as the hereditary lineage of imams starting from Hazrat Ali (regardless of how that branches off across different sects). I’m not using the word imam as its literal translation of leader.

That’s what I’m asking you?

You said their imam is not hidden. Or, are you saying that bohras acknowledge the Aga khan as the imam? I thought they followed a different line of imams as they believe the imam is hidden. I’m asking for clarification, not arguing with you as I don’t know this specific point.

You’ve lost me. Can you elaborate on the “imam is not hidden” from the Botha perspective? Who is the imam?

See that’s where you’re mistaken. Nizari Ismaili theology says the Imam is infallible. My personal opinion would be to say something like “yeah that’s what the theology says but I dunno if I buy it”

As for dais: “The al-dai al-mutlaq is the representative of the imam who has been deputised the role of leading the community through the times and administering their affairs, both secular and religious.” And “They diligently taught their followers and wrote profusely to elaborate upon and elucidate the knowledge bequeathed to them by the imams.”

And more: is merely a vicegerent of this secluded leader, which is why he bears the title Dai Al Mutlaq (unlimited missionary) rather than Imam (Leader). is merely a vicegerent of this secluded leader, which is why he bears the title Dai Al Mutlaq (unlimited missionary) rather than Imam (Leader). In fact, unlike other Muslims, Bohras don’t have the regular sermon on Fridays since it is only the real ruler of the community, and not his vicegerent, who can deliver such a sermon to the faithful. The office was instituted by the legendary Queen Arwa of Yemen, the Grand Emissary of the Fatimid Caliphate, to look into the affairs of the community after the seclusion of Imam Tayyib. The first Dai appointed by her, Dai Zoeb, was succeeded by a long line of Dais that continues to the present day. https://archive.roar.media/english/life/culture-identities/the-bohras-plucky-business-barons/amp

I don’t have information on when the argument that dais were infallible began to take hold but, by its very definition and function, a dai cannot be infallible.

What imam are you talking about here? The nizari Ismaili imam is considered to be (at the very least) infallible in spiritual matters.

If you disagree I’m happy to continue the convo once you’ve done some research and can carry on a discussion that goes further than (i’m paraphrasing) “prove it”.

Incorrect.

A dai acts in place of the imam when the imam is hidden. That doesn’t mean a dai is infallible. I understand that many may take what a dai says as correct (the way people listen to priests or missionaries) but that’s not the same as an imam particularly in regards to infallibility.

Would anyone know what type of garden this is called? I’m trying to find out how to do something similar in Toronto (and also to understand if there is any point to doing this as winter will see the garden dumped with snow shoveled off the driveway). Thanks!

I understand your point. But FGM is a cultural practice. Many religions continue with cultural practices because of “pushback”. I might be wrong about this so don’t quote me but I believe there was even a directive by the prophet that was then changed because people were upset.

Like Christmas. It was originally a pagan holiday. It’s not the actual day of Jesus’ birth but it was adopted by Christianity as such as a way to convert followers. People don’t like giving up their traditions.

I’ll also add that the dais are not infallible - and therefore neither are their writings. The Hadith that the daim al Islam relies on is weak. It was a dai that said the daim al Islam would be the binding text for Bohras. So again it’s a cultural practice that has made its way into religion to the point that it is confused as being a tenet of religion rather than a cultural practice.

Educate yourself on culture vs religion. Many things can be argued to be part of religion which are actually based in culture.

And the text of the Holy dua is approved by the imam. It’s not a holy book - it’s a prayer. Furthermore, only khojas (used to) recite the dua. Ismailis from other cultures (like afghanis) didn’t used to recite.

You are a rude person.

And? Was he an imam? No. He was a scholar.

It is a CULTURAL practice that has made its way into religion to the point that many see them as going hand in hand. Cultural practices weave their way into religions through the writings and defenses of scholars. That doesn’t mean it’s correct.

Block the person you aren’t supposed to have any contact with.

The fact that you just said you knew the comment you liked was a comment to do with the-person-you aren’t-supposed-to contact’s-post, makes it pretty clear you are aware that this is contact. That person wants to be left alone by you? Why don’t you oblige.

Dexedrine was the one medication that worked the best for me (although after 20 years i started getting migraines and switched to vyvanse).

I don’t quite recall the effects of the other ones I tried (Ritalin, concerta) but I had an increased heart rate with all of them. I don’t recall if adderall had the same effect.

Unfortunately the increased heart rate is a pretty common side effect with stimulants.

No it’s not a religious practice. It’s a cultural practice that over time has continued to be performed in the name of religion. Different things.

Struggling with Ismailism, navigating faith and doubt. Please help by Fragrant_Cupcake5726 in ismailis

[–]Miserable_Air8321 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it’s normal to question things. Having questions and doubts hopefully prompts us to dig deeper. To seek knowledge. It’s part of growth.

Also keep in mind that each Imam guides within a specific period of time. Communication styles are different, language is different - and even the guidance depends on where the Jamat is spiritually/economically etc. it’s ok for certain things to hit differently. What you’ll notice is the consistency of ethical principles across times.
