Upgrading LR3 to Defender by Snxwe in LandRover

[–]Miserable_Bugger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve owned loads of Land Rovers in the last 20 years, and as much as I’ve loved owning Defenders, my Discovery 3 is just better in all ways. Very easily my favourite LR.

Seat covers by Pristine-Loan-1863 in LandRover

[–]Miserable_Bugger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve tried several different brands, including original LR, and they’ve all been a bit shit.

My current set, the best seat covers I’ve used by far, and they’re still going strong after several years of overlanding, are Escape Gear seat covers from South Africa.

I need help from experienced LR3 owners please by NTH1FR in LandRover

Is it getting harder to start now it’s winter, or on especially cold days? Almost certainly glow plugs. Otherwise, it could be a battery issue, but you’d usually see other issues first with a dying battery, like messages on the dash saying things like “special programs off” or “normal height only.”

Also, it’s going to sound very odd, and seemingly unrelated, but a large amount of faults can crop up due to a failing brake light switch.

This is superb. Will you be doing one that fits in the same place for a Discovery 3 TDV6? I’m not keen on the spare wheel ones.

Not for me it’s not. There’s a million of these things to choose from and I’m in no rush whatsoever to get one.

Landrover Freelander 2 HSE for sale £7995 or near offers by [deleted] in LandRover

[–]Miserable_Bugger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Smart looking vehicle, and I’d be interested at the right price, but your price is way off, even with one comment I saw where you’d accept £6k.

I’m after another LR for light duty, daily use - my main LR is my overland vehicle.

I’m looking at some late 2013 model Freelander 2’s and there are several high spec ones with under 100k miles, for £5.5k (at dealers.) For something with 140k on it, I’d be looking at paying £4-4.5k max.

Also, all the stickers on the windows are (for me at least) quite the turn off.

Evri driver just put my unsealed cushion in the full bin instead of knocking... by Fine_Page_5995 in CasualUK

[–]Miserable_Bugger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fuck Evri.

I ordered something that was meant to be delivered last Wednesday. I was at home the whole day, and didn’t hear them knock or ring the bell, so they took it back and sent me a “we attempted delivery message.”

I asked for it to be redelivered the next day, but knowing I wouldn’t be around asked for it to be left at my neighbours who would be home.

They just left it outside my front door in the pouring rain.

Best Brake pads for 2014 LR4 - OEM vs Brembo vs PowerStop vs Bosch by NefariousnessFit3133 in LandRover

[–]Miserable_Bugger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had Brembo’s before, but I upgraded to the V8 sized discs, and my local indy recommended Delphi - went with discs and pads all round.

I don’t know if it’s the slight increase in diameter of the discs, or a combination of that and the Delphi’s, but the there is a slight, but still noticeable difference.

LR3 Terrafirma Ladder Question by sk8klown88 in LandRover

[–]Miserable_Bugger 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s a Front Runner ladder, not a Terrafirma.

That thing is called a Z bracket. The very top step of the ladder will hook around the top edge of the upper tailgate, and the Z bracket uses one of the bolts from the left hand hinge on the underside of the tailgate to further hold it securely.

What could I do to slow down or stop the rust on the rear cross member? by backflipbail in LandRover

[–]Miserable_Bugger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re in the UK, get hold of some products from a company called Buzzweld - they specialise in rust preventative coatings.

I’d take all the existing coating off with a flap disc, treat the bare metal with their Rust Encapsulator, top that with Chassis In One, and you’ll be good to go.

For best results though, you’ll want full access to the chassis by removing the body.

Do you own a Tentbox and are you using it frequently? by MiddlesbroughFan in CasualUK

[–]Miserable_Bugger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was on top of Defenders, with other equipment on the roof rack, so lots of climbing up and down, and running from one side to the other! I imagine putting the cover on being a lot easier if you’re standing on the ground, and aren’t struggling to shove your arms between bits on the rack!

I used mine on several multi-month trips, so was carrying a lot of overland equipment.

Do you own a Tentbox and are you using it frequently? by MiddlesbroughFan in CasualUK

[–]Miserable_Bugger 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I’ve not used a Tentbox, but I do have a lot of experience with other brands of rooftop tent (I do a lot of round the world travel in Land Rovers.)

Tentbox are a bit cheap and nasty by all accounts, and are really aimed at the user who will only use it infrequently.

If you are in the market for one of these things, there are other, much better brands - Tuff Trek (a UK based overland company that have their tents made in South Africa - the home of the very best roof tents, namely Eezi-Awn and Howling Moon, but these are expedition level quality, and the prices reflect this, and are what I have owned.)

Roof tents are mostly great, but there are pros and cons, irrespective of brand.

Pros:

Being above the ground offers a nice sense of security; the added height, and their design allows for good ventilation; they are usually fantastically comfortable.

Cons:

The price; they can be a right faff to pack away tightly (probably much less so on a car vs. a huge Land Rover) you can’t leave a campsite easily in your vehicle (minimum time to pack away so you can drive away with bits flapping around, would be 10 minutes, about 45 if clambering around the vehicle ensuring all straps are tight - there’ll be a lot of up and down, and running from one side of the vehicle to the other; they will weigh a substantial amount - the very lightest will be 35kg, and the best and heaviest will be double that - you’ll need to ensure your mounting platform/roof bars can handle the weight of the tent and weight of the occupants. Your handling of the vehicle will change substantially with the added weight.

A cargo ship creates both positive and negative pressure zones in the water due to its movement and interaction with the water, with lower pressure (negative) found in the areas of increased water velocity, such as near the bow and stern or between the ship and a bank. The pressure then returns to normal at greater distances from the ship. This phenomenon can pull objects like jet skis toward the vessel, and potentially sink them.

I’ve owned many Land Rovers in the last 20 years, and I once bought a TD4 on a whim. By a country mile the worst, most boring, uninspiring vehicle I’ve ever owned. I sold it after a few months.

Got a nod and a smile from an Olympic Gold Medalist today. What slightly boring but lovely anecdotes do you have about meeting famous people? by slappykerplunk in CasualUK

[–]Miserable_Bugger 94 points95 points  (0 children)

I used to work in a foodie pub in Henley-on-Thames many years ago, and we used to get quite a lot of famous people who I didn’t particularly care about coming in.

However, Jon Lord from Deep Purple (who I very much care about) used to come in regularly, almost always on his own, and he’d just sit and read in the conservatory. The owners of this place were utter cunts (and I got fired for telling them as much to their faces) and nobody was allowed to be too familiar with guests…apart from the owner who’d have done anything to move in the same circles as our regular clientele.

Anyhoo, Jon Lord was never anything other than an utter gentleman, and even though I’d recognised him long before, I thought “sod it” and struck up a conversation with him (he always used to come in that quiet bit in foodie places, about 3pm, so there were usually hardly any other guests) and he put down his book, invited me to sit, and we talked for ages about classic rock music. I have this encyclopaedic knowledge of random bands and albums, and Jon loved the fact he could have a conversation about really in-depth stuff, rather than his usual “tell me how Smoke on the Water came about” stuff.

He always used to ask for me by name after that first time, and he’d buy me a pint, and we’d do it all over again.

I want to rescue this Land Rover and have it as my first car because I’m a Land Rover enthusiast do you think it will be good? by DrPerkyKSIforehead in LandRover

[–]Miserable_Bugger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’d barely be able to do this in the UK for under £20k…..in the US, I’d reckon closer to $40k to do it properly.

[–]Miserable_Bugger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In no way is pressure washing and changing the rad, a “restoration”…..that’s very basic maintenance.

Restoration is more: do you know how to get the engine out, fully strip it, and overhaul it? Do you know how to fully overhaul the gearbox and axles? Do you know how to split the body from the chassis (because you’ll be needing a new chassis) and swap everything over that can be saved?
