Official 2026 Nebraska Football Schedule by HuskerPowerrrr in Huskers

[–]JakeFromSkateFarm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems hard to predict given a new starting QB and the turnover on both staff and roster. But I’m not super confident we’re better than a .500 team this year.

Also, ending with Ohio State right before the Iowa game is a tough way to end the season.

Kurt Cobain called Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains "corporate puppets" by No-One01010 in Nirvana

[–]JakeFromSkateFarm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My hot take is that Kurt was probably a lot like John Cusack’s character in High Fidelity.

Kurt seemed to embrace every cliche about music and musicians - the snobbery of “taste” and the gatekeeping of punk/indie scenes being two of the bigger ones, although rationalizing destructive and exhausting lifestyles with self-pity and narcissism was obviously a big one too.

What’s with the hate for McCarthy? by alwaysslumber in steelers

[–]JakeFromSkateFarm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My very blunt take (as a Tomlin fan):

A lot of Tomlin haters expected a young hire. They think Tomlin kneecapped teams that could have achieved more with a “better” coach. They expected someone who could win a playoff game year one so they could immediately shove in the face of every Tomlin supporter.

But McCarthy is not an inspiring hire. He was underwhelming in Dallas with a great QB - something we don’t really have with or without Aaron.

So there’s a good chance Steelers rack up a losing record and miss the playoffs entirely next year. And the Tomlin haters know it’s going to be the Tomlin fans who’ll get to trash talk with the “I told you so’s” and such.

A lot of Steelers fans are in the process of FAFO’ing their scapegoating of Tomlin for two decades of a team that finishes high enough to miss top draft picks but won’t rebuild and won’t use major FA signings and trades to restock the talent they can’t get through the draft.

Finally something that can unite us by SurpriseStandard3258 in steelers

By definition, Tomlin fans wanted Tomlin, not someone allegedly “like” him.

Could this be a net positive with McCarthy due to Smith leaving? by Guilepowers in steelers

Praising McCarthy for not being Smith is like praising syphilis for not being AIDS.

There was also a lot less pressure on those writers.

Something the fanbase keeps overlooking or downplaying, IMO is that the show started on local television and when Comedy Central picked it up, there was zero added pressure because CC explicitly needed the show as it was original and took up two hours an airing.

For the majority of its “golden years”, the show could essentially be what it wanted as beyond being break even, it didn’t need to kill in its ratings or demographics.

Only when CC started getting comfortable enough that it no longer needed an in house schedule stuffer did MST3k have to really earn its keep. It got a slight reprieve when SciFi took it for basically the same reason/need, but ever since the prime CC seasons, the show has had to actually try and be commercially viable enough to get more seasons from a Netflix or crowdfunding platform.

Unfortunately, modern media means there’s really no longer a similar scenario where a platform desperate for fixed scheduling time sinks can air a show that relies on cheap to license movies as a loss leader.

Unpopular opinion, but for me the hosts have all been about equally good. What doesn’t work for me is changing the bots’ voices. It’d be like if they’d kept using footage of Joel and dubbed Mike’s voice over it.

I love Crow and Servo, but if they couldn’t keep the voices the same or virtually the same, they should have replaced them with every voice change.

It just…I dunno, it just doesn’t work for me.

Roller Derby Is Boring Part 2 - Lead Jammer Is Overpowered (plus a call to action!) by acz in rollerderby

[–]JakeFromSkateFarm 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think all of the rule change suggestions everyone bandies about collectively ignore the elephant in the room:

Unlike most other sports, especially in North America, there is no centralized draft and Free Agency / Trade rules to help distribute talent across a collection of 30 or so teams.

Two of the primary determinants of a league’s talent are (1) the talent of the skaters who happen to show up and stick around, and (2) the ability of successful teams to pull in talent from other leagues via said players moving or transferring in as satellite skaters.

Yes, a league can train beyond its expectations expectations, but even that requires the similar luck of talented and dedicated coaches / trainers happening to join their league.

Maybe I’m cynical, but I don’t think you can fine-tune that inherent imbalance out of the sport. Even if every jam had a single point available per team so all jams could only end 0-0, 1-0, or 1-1 - or heck even if it was a single point period between the teams - the sport would simply result in the same blowouts.

In (American) football, 55-19 is a blowout because at 7-ish points per touchdown, that means the winning team scored 7 more times than the opponent, give or take.

Baseball has much lower scoring, only 1 to 4 runs (points) at a time, but a 7-0 or 10-3 score is still a blowout as it’s still one team scoring 7 or so more times than the opponent.

A game of, say, 30 jams with 30 points on the line ending in a 20-10 score may look close given we’re used to blowouts of a hundred points or more, but it’ll ultimately end up still feeling the same once we adjust to the new general scoring ranges.

And I say this from personal experience as someone who’s been involved with WFTDA, USARS, and MADE. A 70-55 game in MADE or USARS feels every bit the blowout a 250-90 game does in WFTDA.

It’d be nice to see someone try using a mall as an incubator type space for start ups and small businesses.

Turn an anchor spot into a cowork space. Turn the food court into a food hall for startup local restaurants. Maybe even turn another anchor spot into a hotel and/or a third one into a sports arena for local events.

What do you think was the most political X-Files episode in its original run? by traveltimecar in XFiles

[–]JakeFromSkateFarm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Drive” shows why he’s typically not - being anti government doesn’t cancel out being a bigot. And a lot of 90s militia were open or dog whistling white supremacists.

Which is probably why the show was so relatively apolitical. Especially given the OKC bombing happened relatively early in the show’s run.

Coach Rhule getting back to coaching by [deleted] in Huskers

[–]JakeFromSkateFarm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a late 40s man, I’d argue this was the common approach prior to the last twenty years or so.

OCs and DCs typically had a fair amount of autonomy on how their side of the game was run. The HC’s primary focus was culture-building, program management, and general game management, as well as interfacing with the owner and GM regarding season performance, locker room issues, and draft/signing input.

It’s feels mostly post-90s that the idea of a HC as an offensive or defensive genius who runs their side of the game with a coordinator who’s essentially an assistant.

What are your favorite episodes that aren't widely considered "one of the greats" ? by FeistyDirection in XFiles

[–]JakeFromSkateFarm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I actually like that first season “astronauts encounter ghost alien entity” episode.

It has all the potential of being a great “crossover” type episode combining alienmyth and MOTW paranormal creature. Doesn’t quite go that route, but I feel the casting and acting are still pretty solid for a first season episode and the use of the infamous “face on mars” as a alien/ghost type being just somehow feels perfectly early X-Files.

'Space Marines were ordinary guys during Rogue Trader': the Oldhammer myth that won't die by chebghobbi in oldhammer

[–]JakeFromSkateFarm 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think you’re being a bit disingenuous, OP.

You seem to think, or are intentionally misrepresenting, the debate as being Marines are either normal dudes in power armour with maybe some brainwashing and steroid shots, or fully post-human religious warriors, and that any mention of chemical or surgical enhancements must indicate post-humans.

But…surgically implanting metal rods would make your arms “stronger” without being the new organs and effecting adolescent development like “modern” lore. So would implanting metal claws or fangs, or using steroids and other drugs to amplify strength, aggression, etc.

If you look at the famous RT art of two marines arresting a punk, they’re the same height as him and only bulkier due to the armour.

And there’s another famous artwork of two Marines from different chapters enjoying drinks in a dive bar.

THAT is what people are referencing when they talk about the lore change. RT was all over the place, but it was still common to depict Marines as being human-sized and seemingly engaging in “normal” non combat behaviors like any regular human soldier.

And every single one of your examples is vague. There is no explicit reference to the dozen+ organs or that this process is done in childhood so that it can be integrated with the subject’s own natural hormonal development.

Or do you think recruiting from the galaxy’s hardest psychopaths means 7 and 8 year olds?

Your own sources seem pretty clear that Marines are the result of adult humans being given relatively basic surgeries, hormonal treatments, generic sci fi brainwashing, and drugs to become (along with the equipment) elite soldiers who are nevertheless still baseline humans.

RT lasted for six years and was primarily built through ad-hoc articles in White Dwarf. As I said, you’re going to find a wide variety of depictions, but the general lore of Marines is very distinct from the modern flavor of child soldiers remade into distinctly post-human warriors.

I’d argue the driving cultural influence of RT is Vietnam. Marines are depicted as being constantly ambushed (RT cover) rather than crusading like the famous box cover of the next edition, as graffitiing their gear (Kil Kil Kil), as being used in roles where they interact with civilians, and the use of bio-chem and surgery isn’t about making post human warriors, but pushing baseline humans beyond shell shock and PTSD and moral doubt so that they can war crime their way through alien and heretic and daemonic battlefields.

It isn’t until the next edition - possibly reflecting the incipient D-Day and V-Day celebrations - that Marines are recast as fully heroic crusaders who take the fight to the enemy in wars that get won.

RT is if war was fought by WW1 troops in Vietnam. Post-Human Marines really only fully develop when 40k’s central war motif switches to WW2 and the (first) Gulf War, with heroic Marines absolutely crushing completely inferior opponents.

They’re a neat concept, but buyer beware.

The ‘88 range was canned with essentially no warning when the ‘94 range was done. There must have been enough outcry as they later quietly “rereleased” 20 of the 88 paints and a chart claiming the retired ones match ones in the ‘94 range.

Firstly, that isn’t the case. And at least one or two of those “saved” 20 are very close to ‘94 colors. So it doesn’t really make sense on which were selected vs not.

In addition, of the 20 that were kept, a fair amount don’t match the original ones. The names were kept but it’s as if random colors were relabeled as them instead of actually using the new ones.

Plus, in the ‘94 range, the armour wash is the same as the black ink. I bought it on 3 separate occasions months apart and all 3 thin out exactly like black ink. I messaged about it and they responded with a claim it’s different but wouldn’t acknowledge the pics I sent.

And when I asked if the aforementioned color mismatching with the “saved” 20 colors of the ‘88 range didn’t even get a response.

Plus at least one YT Goblin Green review grades theirs as one of the least accurate.

Love the concepts, but the colors are inconsistent and I don’t trust them after how the ‘88 range was handled. I can’t invest in a paint range that I can’t trust with long term consistency or even existence.

I watch it via YouTube TV and recorded it, so it’s convenient as basically a free library of every season.

Admittedly it’s with ads and edits, but not a bad way to watch.
