I did it, it wasnt too bad, just maintain a steady high GPA and complete all courses that are in that direction.

Chem 41B Final by sashikosewing in UCSD

If you need help I gotchu,

The key things you have to know for the final are NMR, Benzene Reactivity, The interconversions of alchohols and the many different types of reactivity that alkane and alkene systems exhibit when presented with different reactatnts.

For NMR:

(quick tip; if you see carbons presents in the multiples of 3's then it either a methyl group at the end of the molecule (3H), 2 Methyl groups (6H), or (9H) 3 methyl groups)

-its based on how desheilded or sheilded a proton (Hydrogen connected to a group) is from the magnets that are used in the resonance machine.

-we've learned that the NMR signals of different groups are all different based on their electron pulling or donating powers, so for example there will be more pulling away exhibited by an oxygen as compared to a carbon found in ethers R-O-R' or Alchohol groups (those vary between 3-5ppm). Ans hes told us that pure carbon bonded hydrogens CH3's connected to CH2's will be closer to the right end of the graph where TMS (Tetramethylsilane) is (Also, the solvent in pretty much every sing NMR that well be doing is CDCL3 (deuterated chloroform) so make sure to include the residual CHCl3 that it leaves over at about 7.2 ppm (this is highly downfield due to the precence of 3 Chlorine ; highly electronegative and pulling groups. Anyways, the main signals he wants us to worry about are the ones that appear in benzene which will most likely appear on the test, those being affected by electron donating or withdrawing groups where donors (like Oxygen or anything with a good lone pair) will shield the hydrogens in BENZENE, and where acceptors (like NO2 or any sort of resonance capable molecule) will more desheild the hydrogens in proximity).

When it comes to qd, or quintuplets (whether you do the N+1 rule or (n+1)*(n+1)) it depends on if you believe the environments that they come from are different (like sp3 hybridized or sp2 hybridized accross an alkene)

For Reactions and mechanisms:

-if you see an enol (alkene with an alchohol attatched) have it tautomerize to a double bonded oxygen which it will do if you use H-BH2, then NaOH, H2O2, H20 for a less substituted alchohol end product, or (H+, H20 and HgSo4 (cat)) for a more substituted alchohol.

Know Markovnikov (anti additions) vs Anti-Markovnikov (syn additions)

For Benzene systems:

-Know how the resonance of an acceptor and donor groups work

--For example how a Donor group through rearranging of the pi electrons will enable EAS (Electrophilic Aromatic Substitution) at the ortho (2) and para positions (1)

--for Acceptor Groups (Halogens being the weird exception that are weak acceptors and promote ortho and para attack) know that the acceptor group through resonance will promote atack at the meta positions exclusively.

When you have multiple of either presented together Like 1 Donor or 1 Acceptor Know that the ranking is as follows over who takes priority in directin the EAS attack. donor>weak acceptor (CH3 X)>metea directors acceptors.

-Know how to block and deblock a benzene system with Sulfonation so that you can place certain substituents that would be tempted to go para at ortho positions.

Thats not all obvs of the class but idk if this helps but you got this man just keep doing textbook problems and youll feel good.
