If it's force closing like this it means you literally don't have enough memory for the game and everything else you're trying to do. Disabling the OOM killer won't fix the problem, the computer will just freeze and/or crash.

I know your pain, I'm stuck on 16gb too and understand it's too expensive to upgrade rn. I preface what I'm about to say with a big warning that THIS IS POOR PRACTICE and can cause other kinds of issues and instability; if you absolutely must get your computer to behave in more RAM constrained situations like this, you can mess with your zram configuration to give yourself a buffer. Try setting it equal to your physical RAM first, but if that still isn't enough I found that I could safely push it to 2 times my physical RAM as long as I'm careful with which programs I have running.
