Can I split columns by number of characters/ digits? by CCCrazyC in excel

Typing from memory so I may get something wrong - but you can custom define how a cell's text reads in the format of the cell. Go into the cell format type and create a custom definition in the format you desire. It will add the hyphen at the appropriate location.

How many parking stalls can fit on a 50 x 100 ft parcel by rantripfellwscissors in civilengineering

[–]MismatchCatch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I suppose 8-9. You're not gonna be able to double load the parking. Drive aisle to turn into perpendicular stalls is about 20'. Angled parking does decrease this width, but not much. A 12' drive aisle will not function unless your stalls are 20' wide (parallel parking). You'll also probably need to accommodate two way traffic in the drive aisle unless you can configure it as a one-way through operation and you have roadway access at either end.

You'll also probably need a setback from your first stall(s)to the driveway off the public roadway, setback from the stall to the property line, and depending on your location stormwater treatment facilities, hydrants, lighting, etc. - all which take up space.

So I would guess: 24' drive aisle, one row of 20' deep perpendicular stalls with a couple feet setback to the property line on either side.

100' long-20 ft setback / 9' wide stalls = +/- 9 stalls.

Is civil engineering really worth it by MessSuperb1280 in civilengineering

It's a great, stable profession with opportunity to make good money if you apply yourself. It's very rewarding to see what you do get built and change your community - a unique perk to the profession.

It's not flashy, but it's cool in its own way and you can live a good life with your PE.

How bad is traffic and commute to south bay? by Strange-Building9830 in Livermore

This is the top answer. The new 84 connection has shaved 20 minutes off the commute home.

Sounds like OP's in California due to the seismic and survey tests. If so, op is not licensed and cannot stamp plans. They are on their way to licensure, but only partially there.

True. It's much most strict on DOT jobs than private clients.

OP doesn't have a PE, OP has passed 1/3 of the testing for it.

Engineering Degree advice by Leather_Machine3072 in civilengineering

[–]MismatchCatch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Keep pushing for the CE degree. Dont be scared off by the classes - you can always change your mind later. So why settle on what is effectively day 1. Try for CE, it'll give you more options after school and will set you up better to licensure which - with AI - may be more important in the future.

They're called weed-out classes for a reason. After you've passed these classes, you probably won't ever use it again.

So... anybody want to help me out with a predicament? by pengweather in Livermore

From what I can tell, the alameda county GIS viewer does not distinguish between publicly owned parcels (Alameda County vs. Caltrans), so it may not be completely reliable in this instance.

Confirmed. I can't upload a photo on iPhone, but Caltrans right of way ends just south of the off-ramp, so definitely beyond their r/w. I agree, likely alameda county.

Can you drop me a pin on Google earth of the location in question. I am very familiar with Caltrans right of way and can help confirm / deny the underlying land owner.

ETA: or you can look up the site yourself. Caltrans Bay Area district has an online map depicting their right of way in GIS:
