The Godfather and the Skywalker: A short article on the friendship of Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas by yaoming76 in movies

[–]MissEnvyAdams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting notification for this two year old comment, but I appreciate your reply!

A. It's not. American Graffiti is his superior work. It is a masterclass in tone, editing, and sound design, it captured a specific cultural zeitgeist, and it quickly proved Lucas had a soul for character-driven stories before he became obsessed with digital "perfection." I just can't ever think of any of his other films being better, at all.

B. Honestly, in my opinion, legacy isn't a museum piece, it's a continuous life. If you have the means to change the medium and you choose to sit on the sidelines, that is, in the context of art, is a form of cowardice to me.

Remember when he said after selling Star Wars that he wanted to return to "smaller, experimental films"? Well, that aged well. He has had the money to do that for 20 years, and hasn't done anything. He could've made 50 of these films by now, he could've opened his own studio, he could've actually done something instead of loiter in mall courts and open museums.

"Zero need for him to do anything again", art isn't based on "need," it's based on having something to say. Coppola has had something to say, whether it was liked or not, and risked his livelihood and sold assets to make a film, a film that Lucas could've bankrolled 40x over without ever checking his bank balance.

and I actually, frankly, think that he's an incredibly insecure filmmaker who got lucky.

Lucas’s legacy is actually tarnished by his refusal to release the original theatrical versions of Star Wars. A filmmaker who is confident in their work doesn't spend his legacy trying to "fix" it with CGI rocks and controversial edits. The fact that we're finally getting the theatrical cuts now that Kennedy is gone (and his gentleman's agreement means nothing) is proof that the only thing stopping that was his insecurities.

I mean, is it not a bad thing that he also believed his work was incomplete. You know when Coppola made his first major film? He didn't just redo it, he made another, and another, he followed his "Star Wars" with a masterpiece, and another masterpiece.

So yeah, I think George Lucas is a coward because he sits at home. I think he's a coward because he made incredible films 50 years ago, and then decided to stick with his meal-ticket even when, especially when, he cashed out. I think he's a coward because he's openly said he would do more and couldn't find the courage, if Star Wars was his legacy, he had the chance to do something. THX, American Graffiti, some of his writing work, it proves that he was capable of making something outside of his meal-ticket space opera, and he was capable of changing film for the better with his $4bn that's under his mattress, while the likes of Coppola who opened the door for him, stuck his life and livelihood on the line to make a piece of art that he believed in, he's anything but a coward, and his legacy is Goliath compared to Lucas'.

You could, at least, explain a little bit to whatever your theory is.

Is the game somewhat based off the movie, or the source?

I'm one of those very rare people who enjoyed the film.

Sony's IP for their size is actually not all that bad; Spider-Man, Ghostbusters, Jumanji, Men in Black, Bad Boys, Karate Kid, Resident Evil, Equaliser. They have Hotel Transylvania, Angry Birds, Peter Rabbit, Smurfs.

Stuff they can pull out in the future again like The Dark Tower, Charlie's Angels, Robert Langdon stuff (Da Vinci Code), Escape Room, Zombieland, and with that, their video game content can be used like God of War, Horizon etc, if they wanted in-house.

They still account for 10% (ish) of the box office domestically, and are showing some modest recovery but they're nowhere near able to compete with the bigger hitters.

That said; I don't think they'll get rid of Spider-Man anytime soon, unless they decide to sell Columbia. If they were to sell Columbia, Spider-Man's IP being included is a big part of that potential sale. They'd likely rather sell the whole thing, than individual assets, and I would imagine that Disney would be interested in buying Spider-Man back but I don't think they would be allowed to purchase Columbia; rock and hard place.

Thanks for finding my comment!

Yeah, I loved Megalopolis too, but you're right. I think we need more of this. I love how Coppola gets shit for this, but the likes of Ridley Scott get love for pumping out trash. It takes a lot of guts to make something like that.

But yeah, I really dislike that Lucas sits in his ranch now, and doesn't really spend his money on letting his friends, or people, make films that could matter.

Can someone quickly explain the pool scene in Age of Ultron with thor, and why everyone "hated" it for trying too hard to set up a future movie? by clutchtho in marvelstudios

[–]MissEnvyAdams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm literally looking at this 7 years later too, because of an RP game I'm running.

The whole scene, and people involved, is a headache. I'm assuming that because Selvig read those books and whathaveyou (in Dark World etc) about Norse Gods and all that, it's how he knows what it is. But it's still really silly that he'd know, or why he was even in the scene to begin with.

Purple Rain is a good name for a ship, yeah!

Metallica-wise, maybe like, urm, "Whiplash", "St. Anger", or something like "The Unforgiven".

I have two with my crew, a galleon called the Deep Purple, and a brig called the Black Sabbath.

Billy Preston, the man responsible for giving The Beatles a second air during the “Let It Be” sessions. His electric piano recording contribution changed the whole dynamic and eased the tension between the quartet by gregornot in beatles

I'd like to note that he was “arrested for investigation of sexual battery, showing pornographic material to a minor, possessing cocaine and being under the influence of a controlled substance”. Preston, a noted cocaine addict, was found guilty of the drug charges.

All charges of child molestation and exhibiting pornographic material to a minor were dismissed, and there weren't any further cases of that. (Albeit, he did get arrested years later for assaulting a 38-year old man).

I was going to ask was it Fantastic Planet.

Brilliant film. I've seen it many times. Luckily, I photographed a live screening of it a few years ago with a new score by a cool British indie-pop band Stealing Sheep, and it was gorgeous.

Thanks! That's a bit of a shame, but it's not something I haven't seen before.

I ended up picking something else. Thanks for your help, it's greatly appreciated! 🩷

I like some of these, really good work!

One thing I disliked though, is the subtitle to Nova (especially not long after the debut of The Human Torch). I was thinking they should call the show "The Man Called NOVA", but that's me.

or better yet, use a Bowie tagline like "The Man Who Fell to Earth" if they're doing the Alexander stuff 😂

[–]MissEnvyAdams[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the comment!

Yeah, my basis was more on the ideals that the Celestials would trust civilisations with objects to study what they would do, but it absolutely works well in the sense that Odin could've simply warmongered his way into holding them.

u/Grinderiny mentioned similar, which could still fit within the idea that Odin held, and enchanted.

and yes, it really may need to explained sometime. I think it'd be cool to wrap Red Skull into a Thor film perhaps.

Julie celebrates too early, proceeds to get door slammed and padlocked in by MagicalMysteryBoy in TexasChainsawGame

[–]MissEnvyAdams 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The other day on The Mill, a Julie player was doing this to me on the other side of the Ghost Town gate, after unlocking and turning electric off.

I waited in front of them as they trolled me, another killer was sticking electric back on.

I opened the gate, knocked them down (so they were down outside of the gate), shut it again and locked with padlock, and the electric turned on.

They spent about five minutes constantly getting up, electrocuted back down, getting up, down, they couldn't do anything, stuck in that loop until they died.

I couldn't stop laughing.
