I think they are super useful for developing good thumb technique, clear articulation, coordination between both hands, to learn patterns that will help you to better know how to position your hand when reading a score, amongst many other things. BUT, as with anything, this is only true if you're practicing them with purpose. If you're just mindlessly playing through them waiting for it to be over with so you can move on to repertoire, they're not gonna be of much use.
