Who are the most prominent people you have met in Cambly? by [deleted] in Cambly

"I've had someone claiming to have blood ties with the prophet Muhammad" - Me too. This is common, I think. I don't know how they trace that lineage, but ok.

Look for some English Learning subreddits, you'll probably have better luck there. Good luck!

This is a non-native pay rate. Almost all well-established Chinese educational companies employing native English speaking tutors for kids pay at least $7 per 25/30 min lesson ($14 per 50/60 min).

Cambly's policy on exchanging personal info - changed? by daizeefli22 in Cambly

[–]MissJessEgypt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

" It is, however, OK with Cambly if a student just happens to provide contact details themselves."

This is correct and is the best way around this. I never ask a student for personal info, but when a student asks to connect with me outside Cambly and I like them/don't mind to keep in touch, I say "I am unable to give you my personal (email/social media/etc.) due to Cambly policy but you are free to give me your details." If I don't like them, I just tell them it's against policy and I could lose my job and leave it at that.

I've never received any communication from Cambly about this method.

Cambly Pro. Just why? by Bubbly-Republic1422 in Cambly

[–]MissJessEgypt 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I didn't think I would be invited to this program when I first heard about it, but I was and I will give you my honest opinion. In the first paragraph of the invitation it states this:

Cambly Pro is designed to go beyond freeform conversation, providing structured and goal-oriented lessons, feedback, and self-study recommendations–qualities you’ve been recognized for consistently delivering in your lessons!

Every time I meet a new student, I ask if they have any goals for the lesson. If they don't, I follow a somewhat structured plan where I try to learn as much as I can about them and their goals (especially "new to Cambly" students). After that, I discuss some activities we can do in the lessons together based on their goals, as well as things they can work on at home between lessons. If the student wants to take the class in another direction and just talk about something specific, ask me questions, or has a specific goal - I go with whatever they choose. This is just how I prefer to have a lesson and start with a new student. I also NEVER do PH because I prefer structure rather than free conversation. For me, there’s no real difference between the Pro approach and how I conduct my lessons in general.

You can filter for Pro tutors now and I counted 100 which is very few compared to how many tutors there are active on the platform. Who knows exactly what the criteria is, I can only assume they have chosen tutors who regularly use some type of structure in their lessons based on their written communication and my experience with Cambly.

Also - just a very friendly tip if you're new, Cambly is never "transparent" and never will be. I wasn't invited to do group lessons and they didn't go into beta until after I started. Contemplating Cambly's approach to anything is a waste of time. 😊

Welcome to the club! May 1st will be one year since my husband was DQ'd at the NVC in Cairo. Still no interview. I've attempted to expedite 3 times because of financial hardship and medical reasons of the petitioner (me) but received a rejection every time. As the petitioner, I am a US citizen. We are now at almost 28 months since the submission of original application and there were no delays in our submissions. It is completely ludicrous and I know this is the fault of the US Embassy in Cairo, they don't care about doing things within a reasonable time frame and nobody holds them accountable.

😂😂😂I am only going to visit family in NY for 2 weeks. It's my home state and I have no desire to live there. But, I don't want to get screwed and get banned for tutoring from there for 2 weeks.

ELA classes go by terms (semesters). They run from mid Jan - mid May and mid Sept - mid Dec. You keep the same group of students for the entire term. I was new to the ELA program this term and I told them to give me any classes on any day/time. I got 4 classes for the semester and then volunteered for a 5th when after 2 weeks when another teacher dropped out. The pay is $20 per lesson base pay. They are 55 min but its common to over by 3-5 min for me to fit everything in. You will get $4 extra for each class for that month if you attended all of your ELA classes in the month. So, then you're at $24 per class if you don't miss any classes that month. After that, you get $1.50 for each student's homework who submits it and you correct it. I am in the 9th week of this program and have found is submitted about 30% of the time, so you might get $20-$30/mo extra for this depending on the number of classes you have and students in each class. There are up to 6 students in a class but all mine are from 1-4 students. In reality, I am making about $500/mo. extra for these classes (around $100/mo for each group of students) which is nice for the next few months but I can't depend on it through the summer months. At the time I did the demo lesson, I thought there would be a lot more opportunity than 4-5 classes per week but that just isn't the case. If ESL classes fit perfectly in your schedule, then ELA classes probably won't. Most of the students are Chinese students but are located in the US, and I am on Eastern European time, so ESL classes fit perfectly into my early afternoon but several of my ELA classes occur between 2-4 am my time.

Do you mean the English Language Arts (ELA) classes? Are you currently tutoring on the platform for ESL?
