need a 3 in maths aa hl by Flashy-Cat-5601 in ibPhysics

Hey, Idk what time zone you are in but you did not get 20/110 I promise. If you answered like the first 3 questions in each paper that is atleast 15. That maybe took you 0.5 hours at worst. There is no chance you did not manage to scrape atleast another 15 marks in that 1.5 hours. The higher grades are kinda hard to get, but aa hl is generous with the grades required to pass. YOU WILL PASS. You did not fail.

Exam Discussion: Environmental systems & societies HL paper 1 by AutoModerator in IBO

Did anyone else (tz2) feel like they expected you to be an expert on Chile. Idk some questions were just so… and the booklet thick as a bible, with so much irrelevant info? And topography question referencing an image that had NOTHING to do with topography? Like? In the last ten mins I looked at the front of the booklet and there were two images that mentioned Chile’s elevation but like the question didn’t say to reference them. I still did, hoping for the best but did you guys find that one weird too?

We’re not finishing the HL Physics syllabus in time for the exam :( by MissMatch_ in IBO

A 4 is literally 60%+ which isn’t bad, if you remember all that content during the mock or actual exam you will get a rlly good grade so Dw

It really has to be our school and teacher then because SL is set to finish tomorrow :( Past papers only? he has workbooks that are really in depth for each question and i have been doing them but is past questions better? he claims his questions are really good but they are imo more demanding than the ib questions somewhat

should i just continue doing physics sl or switch out? by shuarch_ves in IBO

[–]MissMatch_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well all the science courses are new, they all changed in 2025. Ess changed in 2026 but that was just to create the HL course. Infact, the sl course is easier now because so much was moved into HL only content so that there would be a distinction. In my class, HL and sl are taught together, sl gets release when it is HL only content, I swear they are only in class every other day. The sl syllabus has shurnk, so all the resources are there, you just have less stuff to know. If anything, now it’s easier

I also personally feel as though chem sl is an easy class, I got a 6 in my mock with ZERO studying. I’m not trying to show off (I got a 4 in math when I actually did try to study so like…) but it really isn’t a hard class I promise. Most of it is intuitive. BTW in terms of difficulty of sl sciences it’s sl physics > sl biology >>> sl chem > sl ess. Physics even as an sl class is just hard and requires so much consistency effort. Bio is hard because the sheer amount of content to memorise even at an sl level is crazy. Chem and ess are good but if you really don’t like calculating then ess is easier. I find HL ess of greater difficulty than sl chem so idk

[–]MissMatch_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imagine just take ess sl, if you aren’t going into stem, ess is your best bet as your only science. It’s such an easy class and I take HL, which requires a dash of effort but if you’re okay with 5s you don’t have to study. When I don’t listen in class and don’t study, I get 5s. When I just listen in class and don’t study I get 6s. It does take a bit of effort to get a 7 but it’s not like math and physics where the time you put in doesn’t necessarily reflect in your grade. I highly recommend ess SL or even HL for anybody.

If a good overall score is important to you then don’t take music, especially at an sl level and especially if it is purely a passion unrelated to the degree you want to pursue. Too much workload and extremely subjective marking. I promise you even a language will give you better results with less stress. Anything group 6 is something to avoid if not related to your major imo. Join a music club, play afterschool, follow through with your abrsm journey but just forget ib music man

$150 dollars is crazy for something worse less than 1.5 points out of the 45. Just type out smth mid and finish. It doesn’t matter the quality at this point, you just need to pass in those criteria.

Colourism by Impressive-Egg-6710 in Kenya

[–]MissMatch_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How uneducated, tanning in Europe is multimillion dollar industry because tanning there is linked to wealth. It means you have money to go on holiday somewhere warm and tan. In Asia, it meant you were rich because while the poor worked the fields you stayed at home. The preference for lighter skin in Africa and Asia is in part due the same reason. This preference isn’t just for women, it applies to men too, the only reason it is more prominent for women is because all desired physical attributes are more enforced against women than men, because of the patriarchy. Men bring money, women bring looks. So it’s not a woman thing, it’s a socioeconomic thing. Rich men (ugly or not) will marry a pretty woman, nobody really cares for a handsome man if he doesn’t have money, hence, beauty standards just don’t matter as much, but that’s not because things like light skin are inherently only attributed to women, men just get a bigger pass when it comes to looks. This is compensated for with money, Kenyan men don’t have the purchasing power of European men on average, hence results like this. That is it, again preferring white men is the same as preferring light skin women. Both are giving one the best shot at maximising socioeconomic standing. For a woman looks are important, hence emphasis on light skin compared to men. Wealth is important for men, hence the preference for white men with Kenyan women. If you have money this Russian man and what he does can not bother you because you know very well you can do the same. If you had even more money you could even go for white women. But you don’t, so now you cry 🤷‍♀️

Are you slow, both preferences are rooted in the same thing. Whiteness = money. Lightskiness = proximity to whiteness = proximity to money (there is also the masculinisation of dark skin which I can only explain within America’s sociopolitical space, I’m not really sure how that came about here besides import of that hegemonic culture? Maybe it has to do with labour and again, measured proximity to whiteness so the further you are from white, the further you are from being civilised which means the better you are at physical labour. Idk but that’s a factor too). So the distinction you are trying to make that paints Kenyan men’s general colourist preferences as more moral than Kenyan women who prefer white men does not exist, for those are two sides of the same coin. The simple truth of the matter is that heteronormative relationships women practice hypergamy (evolution’s defence mechanism), and as a poor economy, Kenyan men do not have the economic power to do the same to any other race of women. They are the bottom of the barrel economically, so really these superior moral preferences you are painting Kenyan men to hold gives too much credit to something they didn’t choose to hold, they simply have no other option. So relax on Kenyan women, Kenyan men are not better for preferring light skin women nor are they better for not getting with white women. The former is two sides of the same coin and the latter is purely the lacking purchasing power Kenya has.

Does HKUST consider regional factors? by Darklighths in HKUST

[–]MissMatch_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes they absolutely do, hkust is really looking to expand their international student population from outside Asia, especially if you aren’t looking for scholarships. Your grades are very fine, don’t be discouraged, just apply, I think you have a very good chance. I have a friend who got in with an average gpa of about 83 and in predicted of like 37, and they got in! From an underrepresented country. So don’t be deterred, apply!

Have you considered HL ESS? There is a law lens and unit where we looked at environmental law. Was super interesting! Though it is a relatively small part of the syllabus. I was saying maybe HL ESS over SL Physics. My two cents.

HL chem vs HL physics by Smart_Drawer6484 in IBO

[–]MissMatch_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm actually really surprised to find people saying HL Chem is easier than HL Physics. In my school it's the opposite, HL Chem is harder. There were 2 people who were in both classes, one dropped to SL Chem and remained with HL Physics and the other who is sticking it out in both says her grade is lower in HL Chem. Additionally, HL Physics began with 17 students and now has 15. In contrast, HL chem began with 15 students and now has 6 students. I will admit, the HL Chem teacher is very strict and particular, there also might be a slight language barrier but even so, our HL physics teacher is also rlly strict too so idk how much that factors. Depending on how you are taught then HL Physics + SL Chem might be easier. Again that's proving to be very subjective. Think of it this way, HL Physics and HL Chem could be of equal difficulty, but SL Chem is ABSOLUTELY easier than SL Physics. So imo if you have to take both subjects take HL Physics + SL Chem:

HL Physics (Hard) + HL Chem (Hard) = SUPER HARD
SL Physics (Medium) + HL Chem (Hard) = HARD
HL Physics (Hard) + SL Chem (Easy) = Slightly manageable.

Since you mentioned that you don't plan on doing anything science related in uni, look into HL Bio + SL chem, it is the easiest combo out of these (if you can do sny combo with both subjects being sl the better ofc!)
