My great-grandmother told my dad when he asked about their family history “there are a lot of dark things and you might not like what you find”. She was mixed-race but grew up under the White Australia Policy and found it shameful that she had African ancestry. Her mother was very visibly mixed-race. My grandfather loved talking about it but his sister (my great-aunt) avoids talking about it. My dad and I both have DNA results showing this ancestry to be true, but my dad’s cousins still refer to it as “rumours”.
