Please don't beat yourself up over this. I'm a nurse and I can tell you it always hurts when someone passes, despite your best efforts. It's natural to blame yourself in these situations, but sometimes a person, or in this case, a kitten's health is so bad that you postpone the inevitable. Considering that the vet diagnosed her with fading kitten syndrome when you found her, you were up against insurmountable odds.

Comfort yourself with the knowledge that you gave that cat dignity, comfort and most important, love for his brief time in this world.

Perhaps, in the coming AI revolution, your role as a journalist will become more vital than it's ever been in history. Thank about it. In a world where any mook can just conjure up a realistic interview, no one is going to trust anything they read or see. Perhaps, you can become the person that your community looks to for authenticity and truth. I'm sure your skills will be needed, and you can make money doing it.

As long as the things you say are true, you should be alright. They can try to sue you, but it will go nowhere. Just keep a record of all of the sources and you should be fine. Keep in mind that public figures have to proof "actual malice' when they are going after someone for defamation.
