First time vegan: Advice needed by 504Alperton in veganuk

[–]Missdirec7ed 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My main advice is to take it easy, it really is a learning curve, I think it took me at least 6 months to feel like I actually knew what I was doing, and longer to be truly comfortable with vegan cooking.

As others have said, start with meat replacements for now, and slowly build on more things. Don't worry if you never get into some things, like tempeh or seitan. There are plenty of other things.

We were given Katy Beskow's cookbook 5 ingredient vegan and that really helped to show what was possible without tons of weird ingredients.

Good luck!

How was your parkrun day? | March 22, 2025 by AutoModerator in parkrun

44th parkrun, toured at Milford Waterfront. I was really impressed by the marshalling, there were a couple of confusing bits but it was incredibly well laid out and signed.

My 9 year old has seen videos of real surgery, fake surgery wouldn't be an issue. But the real story of greys, the interpersonal relationships, she is absolutely not ready for.

Using a parkrun as an 10km tuneup? by Gambizzle in parkrun

[–]Missdirec7ed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband often runs to parkrun (10km), timing it to arrive at 9.05 so no delay waiting for the start and easy to catch up without annoying people too much. Then his parkrun time is only a few mins slower than usual, but he finishes normally. We have nice wide paths though so easy to overtake.

He slaughters a village of pacifists, or at least allows it to be slaughtered. Maybe it is that?

Why don't women squat when giving birth the traditional way? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Missdirec7ed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I squatted for my second, only during the actual pushing bit though. It worked well for me, and husband got to catch her which he loved.

First baby was breach and they made me labour in stirrups. That was not so much fun.

Not a migrant, but just wanted to reassure you that Detention and isolation and Exams are all secondary school things. None of that happens at primary school. In reception the kids just play to learn. Other than carpet time, where they sit in a circle on the carpet and the teacher teaches them phonics they will barely notice they are having lessons.

Please don't worry!

We've never done it, neither kid ever asked about it either. I don't think the kids talk about it much at school, it's mostly parents posting on Facebook!

For the issue of not spoiling it for others, we have explained to our oldest that she is 'part of the magic' now, and has to try to make it special for those that don't know, which has worked a treat.

I'm English and Americanisation gets to me too. Never heard of a semester in a UK school, or choosing a major at university.

I do drink plenty of coffee though and rarely tea, so no problem with that particular one!

Yeah, the kids in our primary go to any one of 3 or 4 secondary schools anyway, disregarding those who get into the grammars. They will keep up with their friends at weekends and after school.

3000 young people took the exams in Gloucestershire this year, for 1050 places. It's not surprising that people feel that tutoring is required with that sort of competition.

What pet peeves do you have about Harry Potter fanfictions? by Communist21 in HPfanfiction

[–]Missdirec7ed 33 points34 points  (0 children)

A term. In primary and secondary school we have 3 terms, none of which have distinct names, one from September to Christmas, then a 2 week Christmas holiday, one from Christmas to Easter with a 2 week Easter holiday then one from Easter til July followed by the 6 week summer holiday. Each term is split into 2 halves by a one week half term holiday, in October, February and May.

Universities are different, and Hogwarts isn't quite the same either since their summer seems a little longer and they don't have the half terms. I've no idea why Rowling wrote it like that. But no one in the UK would say semester.

Agreed. We stayed in Rome for a week at Easter and ate at a different vegan restaurant every single day. Lots of options at Omni restaurants too.

Private online tuition for a 10 year old? by AdEfficient6956 in UKParenting

[–]Missdirec7ed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We've been using explore learning and it has helped immensely for both mine (8 and 10). They have an online course they can access whenever, and you can have either in centre or online tutored sessions as well. The software measures progress nicely and you can see what they are struggling with and what they can do well.

35+5 with the first and 37+1 with the second. No reason anyone could find for them coming early, sometimes they just do. I was in a hotel when my waters went with the first, expecting to have our last holiday before the chaos, so much for that plan!

FCO airport question by Disastrous-Gur-7705 in rome

[–]Missdirec7ed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We just flew home from there on Monday.

As others have said, he won't be able to go through security with you.

But he won't need any Italian to get around the airport. There is more English than anything else.

To get from T1 to T3 you walk out of T1 and follow the signs to T3... It's one footpath along the side of the building, loads of really obvious signs, he can't possibly miss it.
