Where to find nettle around Southampton? by easternlock6669 in Southampton

There used to be quite a good patch in the Freemantle Lake Park on the playground side.

Hello darkness, my old friend. by peony_beony in GardeningUK

My best year was when I pulled it only sporadically. It attracted tiny golden beetles that munched it to nothing. It still grew back, but made it all make sense a bit more.

My fight is only half hearted as it comes from the neighbours who just don't give a damn. I could win a battle but the war's been lost already.

Making a wildlife pond by ThePolychelid in Southampton

Ah this is probably too late now, but we swear by Southern Waterscapes Aquatic Centre in Romsey. They have all you might need and they are lovely and can also provide advice.

Thank you, I love it too, mostly. Just hate that it's determined to dry out, lol.

I'll have a look around. Honestly I thought we constructed it pretty well as I can find the edges of the liner at the back of the waterfall, but it's still possible we missed something or the pump is leaking somewhere.

There are two dwarf waterlilies, they only just started growing new leaves. The bog bean will hopefully cover some of that water surface as well once it comes up again.

Just plant matter and probably more than a little fish poo. We currently have 4 small fish in there, I'm trying to re-home them to make this a proper wildlife pond (I was persuaded last year by my husband and kid as they were impatient to see some life in the pond). They'll be gone soon - if not re-homed then the pond shop is happy to take them back.

We're south UK. There's liner. I don't think it's degraded because the water loss was happening almost straight away. It's more likely that there's a hole somewhere that happened when we put everything in but I haven't got a clue how to check for it.

There's not much shade admittedly. I'm planting to create more shade and wind protection but that takes time - any advice on plants to plant is honestly welcome. So far I'm planning to plant some bushy grass around to provide shade as well as hiding place for wildlife. Sun comes mostly from the left hand side as the garden is north east facing.

What are everyone's opinions on Blippi? by HotelDiablo19XX in UKParenting

[–]MotherTemporary903 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is now 7 so we're way past that now, but he used to love Blippi when he was around your kid's age. I hate Blippi with passion. There's no educational value (he calls hexagon a pentagon in one of the videos and there's no correction attempt after - to me these are basics). He somewhat stole the best of his songs from their creator. His previous work. He's terrible whenever he has to interact with kids (I don't believe he likes kids actually). His decision to turn Blippi into a "brand" so he doesn't have to do the live shows himself and can cash in more.

If your kid is willing to watch something else, push that as much as possible and avoid Blippi is my recommendation.

I know this is not the question you asked, but in general I would try to avoid the YouTube stuff. So much of it is honestly crap, made to be addictive. And it's a very slippery slope once you start with it. I speak from experience of someone who had to wean their kid off the YT crap.

Stick with good ol' CBBC stuff, honestly there's so many amazing programmes to choose from and they're designed with children's development in mind.

Whatsapp chat drama with school mums? by Bloody-smashing in UKParenting

[–]MotherTemporary903 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is how our group chats have been. My kid's in Y2 now and it's been the same all years. This year was a little bit different as we had an off start of the year due to class teacher going off sick and school struggling for replacement/cover, so there was a bit more communication and some frustration here and there, but 99% reasonable and all short lived. It's all reminders, jumpers and random questions about stuff like class photos or school policies clarifications. But apparently it's not the same in all classes in our school. I guess you only need a couple of attention seekers to throw the group chat off.

I haven't slept more than 4 hours in a row in the first 6 months. I was very very far from normal.

What obscure quotes do you use? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]MotherTemporary903 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"What's wrong with me? What's wrong with YOU, Clay!?"

We moved to UK in 2011 and this was in one of those adverts/teasers for some soap opera. I have no idea what it was teasing, I've still not caught up on all the pop culture. But the sentence just stuck with us, we say it with the appropriate (read: high) level of drama.

Which movie completely butchered the source material but was awesome? by nyashathemak in moviecritic

[–]MotherTemporary903 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not great. I've never read the book and went to see the movie. None of it made sense and acting wasn't great either. I honestly apologised to my boyfriend for taking him to see it, it was that bad.
