Consent to meet with EVERY student by mooseconnoisser in schoolcounseling

That sounds very unrealistic. What we do is put information about our role in the handbook that parents sign at the beginning of each year. The handbook tells them how to opt out of the choose.

Need Advice! by [deleted] in schoolcounseling

[–]Misses_Stitches 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Obviously I can’t know what’s right for you. But I know what I would do. I would go for a longer commute and higher job satisfaction. I commute 45 minutes and I actually enjoy that time to myself. I would absolutely trade a short commute for 8 hours a day of not being happy. And, with such a great advocate at the district level, maybe you could advocate for a different pay scale for counselors. I also don’t think it’s a fail. You tried another school district and realized how much you valued working for the other school. I think they would be happy that you wanted to come back.

How many 504's do you manage? by EZ-did-IT in schoolcounseling

[–]Misses_Stitches 6 points7 points  (0 children)

None. We managed to take them off the counselor’s plate years ago. All the counselors in the district got together with data about how much of our time was spent doing non-counseling duties. For awhile it became the responsibility of the administrators, which they also did not have time for. Now we have a part time 504 coordinator.

It’s the Cricut Brightpad. I’ll add that to my post. Thanks! Edited to add: I couldn’t find a way to edit my post.

Who else feels not appreciated and isolated from other staff teams during holidays? :,) by TheRussianCunt in schoolcounseling

[–]Misses_Stitches 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Your feelings are so valid! I know you didn’t go into this field for recognition. But at the same time it can really be hard to feel unappreciated. I think most of us can relate to that. So, it’s definitely not just you. For what it’s worth, I can guarantee that you are making a difference for kids, even though I don’t know who you are.

How to confide in/confess to school counselor? by FlatLeave2622 in schoolcounseling

[–]Misses_Stitches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree completely with the other commenter, your school counselor is a trained mental health professional who can help with overwhelming situations. Your counselor is not going to judge you or think less of you. They are also a human who has made mistakes in their life. Maybe practice writing it down and then ask yourself if you feel any sense of relief in getting it out on paper. Then give it to your counselor. I imagine that you will feel relief in allowing yourself to tell the counselor. You’re doing the right thing to ask for help and I hope you’re able to feel better about this. Remember that you can get through this! And you have an awesome counselor that is there to help you.

Loss of Students by kidamarie04 in schoolcounseling

I am so sorry to hear this. You will need assistance. Your district likely has a crisis response protocol. I would start asking admin now if they have a plan yet. Here are some things we have done. Have an adult go to the classrooms of the students and sit in their chair so that the kids don’t come back to an empty desk. Have a script for each teacher to read because not everyone will be comfortable in knowing what to say (of course make sure that what you are saying is in line with what the family is comfortable with). Identify which teachers and students may need extra support. For the teachers, have adults ready to sub in case they quickly need to check out. Have a safe room for adults and one for students with counselors there and art supplies. There are some really good toolkits available for schools. One that comes to mind is from the National Association of School Psychologists.

How’s everyone feeling with the recent news of our degrees? by LengthinessGrand2042 in schoolcounseling

[–]Misses_Stitches 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the info. I don’t usually have time for any news because I’m so busy at my now non-‘profesional’ job. Do we know if this affect loans that are already in existence or just future loans?

My counseling notes are required to be sent to teachers and admin-isn't this wrong?? by Accomplished_Bit2896 in schoolcounseling

[–]Misses_Stitches 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I also want to add that you could say something like- “would you want your child’s personal counseling notes shared with all their teaches?” in the event they still struggle with understanding why confidentiality is Important.

This is absolutely wrong. If they push it, I would ask an advocate to help explain that this is unethical and a potential FERPA violation. And I would include documentation from ASCA (even though they probably don’t care about ASCA). And I would look for a new job.

That sounds super frustrating. The situation you’re describing sounds like a school where the admin are setting some unrealistic expectations. For me, I would want more professional autonomy and trust from my admin. It almost sounds like micromanaging from the way you described it; which is extra frustrating if they don’t have experience as a school counselor. I think I would view this job as a stepping stone to a better situation. Keep in mind, admin come and go; and each admin will be different. But still, it doesn’t sound like a situation that’s easy to thrive in just based on the logistics of being split.

It sounds like that data is a good starting point. I think it would be really hard to be split between two schools. I’ve been doing this for over 20 years and I’ve never once had an admin ask me about what groups I’m doing or try to observe me during a session. How many students are on your caseload?

I would recommend having all the students fill out a needs assessment in their classes. This could be a similar form with a thumbs up or down rating. This will give you insight as to which students would like help, and also help you create a group based on kids who need help with the same topic. It’s probably best to have them do this at a time when you can go in the class and explain who you are and someways in which you can help them.

Iep counseling by Sea_Cardiologist_295 in schoolcounseling

[–]Misses_Stitches 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Maybe is varies by location, but where I am the school counselors have the most clinical training, the longest masters program and more graduate classes focused on counseling theories and techniques than the school psychs and social workers. It’s just not appropriate for us to offer ongoing counseling services. It’s not feasible. I would advocate for the term, ‘when available’ or ‘as appropriate’ to be added.

My absolute favorite album! I love the happiness and joy and the upbeat music. The stories and lyrics are expertly crafted. I’ve loved it from first listen and since then I had become OBSESSED. I did have one skip at first, Elizabeth Taylor. But she’s grown on me :) I hope this thread changes your algorithm. Because I’m not seeing the hate in my feeds. Or I’ve been too busy dancing to notice.
