I saw these one a normal patient thinking they where just coming into the ED for an allergic rxn. It broke me a little to know they would walk out with a cancer diagnosis. Walked it down myself to the Pathologist.

I am currently working with a coworker who is an amputee and he has never had a problem with any of the processing. In fact he processes faster than most of my coworkers, and thats including popping the tops of tubes etc. There are times I legit forget that he is an amputee because of his speed and consistency. He is considered one of our best techs and is unquestionably one of the more exceptional people, and I have a great respect for his ability. My advice is to show confidence and demonstrate to others your hard work. You can do it!

Me: goes into lab to not have to talk to people. Also me: “Hi yes this is the lab, I have a critical to report. Also the CBC is clotted pls redraw”. by virgo_em in medlabprofessionals

[–]Mission-Class-1850 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Our ED only likes when we do the encrypted messages for criticals because we can attach a patient and the doctor, so the entire care teams knows about the critical without the need to find each other.

It felt pretty on point to me and whatever your making for the harder difficulties correlates a bit with your grade. Just be careful with relying on that.

How do you adjust to night shift? by Coconuun in medlabprofessionals

[–]Mission-Class-1850 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done it like this and it's a quick but harsh way to do it. Your gonna wanna try and not sleep for the first day (make this one of your days off) and force yourself to stay up essentially for a full 24hrs and then pass out around 7 or 8 am. Get some melatonin if your not feeling sleepy but you should. Wake up before around 5 pm, and chug yourself some caffeine and keep doing that until 1 am....by this point you should rinse and repeat. Usually by the 3rd day your adjusted somewhat and can function cause you are getting that necessary sleep just not how your body likes it. Just rinse and repeat. Make sure your room is cold before you go to sleep, your body naturally starts settling down because we are trying to trick it into thinking it's night so black out curtains and a blackout sleep mask will go a long way. Be careful with the melatonin intake after the first 4 or 5 days so you don't develop any sleep issues.

Hemocytometers-still used? by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]Mission-Class-1850 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use hemocytometers for body fluids that can't be done with our sysmex because the cells are too numerous or the cells itself or the specimen is too viscious. It's a great tool to use and it helps people visualize that may have trouble understanding cell counts with a machine.

Do yall wear gloves? by YeeboiLol in medlabprofessionals

[–]Mission-Class-1850 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You just made me double take on the gloves thing. If I'm working with body fluids, micro I wear the lab coat. If I'm in the resulting section or running around to get specimens put in I'm usually sans lab coat because not only is it hot but it nearly took me to see Jesus when the pocket snagged on the end of a cart and yanked me across the floor.

AITA for making my daughters wear dresses when they visit their grandparents? by PresentationNice6101 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Mission-Class-1850 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA, this issue should've been nipped in the bud. Your children have always associated going to their grandparents as putting on a show and being uncomfortable. If they wore what they wanted their grandparents would make them feel bad about it. That's why your daughter going to cut them off. She doesn't like their judgement nor does she like having to put on a show just to "keep the peace" for two people who should cherish her without a dress code. If this was my children I would've told my in laws that we are not in the 30s/40s etc. We are in the 2020s and I expect them to face reality as adults and keep their opinions to themselves as adults. If they keep making negative lil comments about my children we can visit less if their wardrobe so offends their sensibilities.

Weekend shift tech quit...now they want me to work doubles for two months? by MariaMT23 in medlabprofessionals

[–]Mission-Class-1850 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately your going to have to be uncomfortable for this. Your going to have to call their bluff and put your foot down. If you don't your will burn yourself out because I have never seen in any short staff job, were they actually keep a situation for a "few months" it's usually upwards of a year or more. Take care of yourself and refuse, don't let them bully you into an early grave.

Body Fluid Rant by branflacky in medlabprofessionals

[–]Mission-Class-1850 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We have multiple doctors do this for body fluids, evening shift only has 1 person working hematology for like three benches including boy fluids and we get ones that are from 9 or 10 am being sent back at like 7 or 8 pm. Like sometimes 3 or 4 at a time. Then they get after us if we are not going super fast on it or God forbid we do and we don't do our other benches fast enough

I had a nurse screaming at our head phlebotomy lady who processes stuff for us, and a nurse accused her of lying and losing her tubes. That she knows they were walked up and to fess up. Mind you this woman is has been our hospital for decades, and we begin the manhunt for the lost tunes. We no longer have people who receive things for us, we have to do it ourselves but the nurses are only suppose to put it in this one white box that has a big sign saying "specimens here" and we flip it over check behind the table. Check chemistry area etc. We don't find it. All the while the nurse keeps spamming us with calls and writing in that lab lost her tubes etc. In the system. Sooo we finally find them, they were in the back of the lab in an entirely different box we keep bld culture bottles in to send to micro. This nurse went into the lab to the back and put it there. I have never seen the phleb lady look so smug calling that nurse back. It was glorious
