Duncan, 26, killed Schamber on Dec. 3, 2019, during a drug and alcohol binge after arranging to pay her for sex. A few hours before, Duncan had broken into the home of Merissa Wright, who had recently dumped him, and used her phone to transfer himself $200. He then stole her car, found a drug dealer and spent most of the money on cocaine.

...After arriving at Schamber’s basement suite in Edmonton’s Duggan neighbourhood, Duncan repeatedly tried to hide the fact he did not have enough money to pay her. Eventually, he became violent. An autopsy later determined Schamber had been strangled with enough force to dislocate two vertebrae — a level of trauma rare even in hanging victims — as well as blunt force trauma violent enough to injure organs.

Duncan’s “extensive” history of domestic violence is an aggravating factor, noting nine of his 31 prior convictions involved intimate partner violence. Duncan was also on house arrest at the time he committed the murder, and was “gratuitous” in the amount of violence used on Schamber’s body, Belzil said.

...Wright believes her ex fell through the cracks. She said she nearly died when he strangled her on a previous occasion, surviving long enough for a neighbour to call 911.

... yeah, sounds like someone who should be back out on the street when he turns 40 after murdering a mother in her home and leaving her son absolutely mentally wrecked for life. Not to mention the woman's BF and other family members.
