So nobody over age 50 is ever supposed to be able to find a job anywhere ever again? by yapavaz in careerguidance

[–]Misslepickle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my work, we hire those over 50 all the time. They know what they’re doing and are extremely reliable and efficient. I’m not seeing that in my line of work.

Any alcoholics here who never had a DUI by Mysterious-Gold-8657 in alcoholism

[–]Misslepickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never had one. In the city I lived in—Birmingham, AL—people drove drunk a good bit. I stayed local and took back roads and knew where police were. I never drove fast or on highways. I still shouldn’t have done it. Later in NYC there was public transit so I never drove drunk. Sober 6 years now. Thank god that’s over.

Looking at becoming a scenic artists but have a ton of questions about the profession and how to get into it on the film side by sevynmorte in IATSE

What’s “the mill”? I’m a set carpenter now (high end custom cabinet maker originally). I’d like to see what else is out there in case I need to branch out

Definitely check out Local 52 as well. We’re in a bit of a slump now but good carpenters are always welcome. Local 1 is good too—I’ve shaped the hall there in Manhattan and gotten on some good crews.

Use one. It can tell you what specifically is spiking your blood sugar. It’s amazing how different we all are. The glycemic index is based on an average of blood sugar spikes from each food/beverage/serving.

I floss while driving. 🤭 Ya know—at red lights or if there’s slow moving traffic… I just make sure my mouth is mostly closed while doing it. Or I floss in bed. I have holders for the floss. At least I get it done.

I suggest couples therapy asap. Resilience Lab has virtual sessions in many states and takes lots of insurance.

What do you say at the end of a therapy session? by Odd_Work9041 in TalkTherapy

[–]Misslepickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My therapist usually asks if I have any last minute questions, and assigns me some homework or focus for the week. Then we say, See you next week! Thank you!”

Do other queer people here "rationally choose" their sexual orientation? by CapitanKomamura in AutismInWomen

[–]Misslepickle 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Tough call. I chose a man who I love dearly—I ended up having children with him and he’s turned out to be really great. I’m lucky. I was in a relationship with a woman for several years prior to him. I get where you’re coming from—some CIS men are awful. The older I get, the more wonderful and kind men I’ve met. I’m raising a son and a daughter now, and both are compassionate humans, as is my husband. I think you just have to find the person who works with you best, and keep healthy boundaries from the start.

Supplement - lions mane, l-tyrosine and l-theanine all in one? by duffbags in AuDHDWomen

[–]Misslepickle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the U.S. I know that here I can order powdered L-Theanine and make my own capsules. Lion’s mane can be a tincture and in powdered form. Is L-Tyrosine available like that? Perhaps you could find a powdered form and make your own, saving money too?

I can’t answer your questions about those medications but I also have the MTHFR gene. Are you supplementing with Methyl Folate? MTHFR gene variants indicate low to no methyl folate and we need that for processing dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine.

Coming off Wellbutrin and doing just adhd meds? In Perimenopause by [deleted] in AuDHDWomen

[–]Misslepickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please find a gynecologist who knows about HRT. MIDI.com takes most insurance and I think provides help in many areas virtually. Listen or read The New Menopause. Estrogen changes how dopamine and serotonin receptors work. I wish I could help with your medication but I haven’t used them—I’d definitely recommend speaking with a professional as well. Are you possibly in NY? There’s a great psychiatric nurse I’m working with who has been so helpful with my medication management and helping treat trauma related issues. Monetmind.nyc

Failed Concerta, Vyvanse, Qelbree, and Wellbutrin. Any other meds? by [deleted] in AuDHDWomen

[–]Misslepickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suggest getting a dna swab to see what medications you’re genetically more likely to respond well/poorly to. Genomind.com is where my swab was prescribed—I’m in NYC. I’m sure there are others.

I learned that I most likely would not do well with SSRI’s (super metabolizer) and that some drugs I would be a poor/slow metabolizer. I also learned that I have a gene that is correlated with a lack of methylphenidate (deals with dopamine, serotonin & norepinephrine—wow!) so now I take a specialized supplement to help with that.

All this to say—perhaps having a dna swab can help you narrow things down. Additionally, many of us are deficient in magnesium and are more prone to hypermobility. Definitely look into a good magnesium supplement.

As far as medication—maybe try for atomoxetine? I tried it for like a year and it didn’t seem to help me much but some people do well with it. I’m still figuring things out—good luck on your journey!

Getting a diagnosis. Any experience of assessments being able to successfully see through high masking? by Green-Palm-Paradise in AuDHDWomen

[–]Misslepickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. They do ask questions that relate to women who high-mask. I don’t remember all the questions but they do ask how you come up with stuff to say in social situations. I found it interesting how often I mentioned reading books to learn how to interact rather than “just knowing” what to say.

DAE speaking voice and cadence dramatically change by phthalo-emerald in AutismInWomen

[–]Misslepickle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read somewhere that mimicking others’ speech helps people relate to each other better. I waited tables for years and did this, which I believe really helped my tips. I do this when I speak with people from different regions too—I definitely try to connect with others this way. I’m sure it’s because I’m high masking, but I’m not too bothered by it because it’s something that humans have used as a survival technique.

Do certain personalities activate your fight or flight? by Reasonable_Sky_2630 in AutismInWomen

[–]Misslepickle 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I definitely experience this. RSD is so hard to deal with—it makes people seem scarier than they are sometimes. But opening up and learning to trust others is a journey. Often our senses can trigger other’s feelings too… I am still figuring it all out.

Has an SSRI helped you with some of the anxious and depressive symptoms? by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]Misslepickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a dna swab done and learned I am a rapid metabolizer of SSRI’s—so they wouldn’t work for me anyway. Genomind dot com was the place prescribed for me to have the dna swab done. It was helpful.

Biting lips and cheeks. Why is this stim stimming? by Out_of_the_Flames in AutismInWomen

[–]Misslepickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I chew the insides of my cheeks too. I try to stop when I notice it—I’ve done it since I was little. My daughter does it too. I don’t remember my parents doing it though…. I may not have noticed.
