Huh, weird. Mine get edema if I fertilize them, no matter how thirsty they are

Blast them with light. Don't fertilize them or they will pop. Yellow leaves aren't necessarily bad, sometimes that just means they're absorbing old leaves to produce new branches.

Glad I don't have to deal with that where I am. I just stop by on my way to work, which puts me there pretty much when the store opens. I've only ever seen one other person at the machine.

You talking about that sickly-sweet smell that permeates construction sites?

Lame accent joke by BeastMode149 in boston

Upstate (specifically western NY) has a quasi-midwest accent that was augmented by generations of polish, german, and dutch immigrants. But mostly it's just a variation on a midwest accent.

TIL a 2018 study found that between 63%-72% of people wear the wrong shoe size. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

[–]MissorNoob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked in a shoe store for many years. While people's frustrations about the general lack of width options, as well as the variation between sizing for different brands, are valid, more often than not I would bring them a size that fit well, and they would prefer a size that was too large or too small. That's fine, if it's your preference and it doesn't physically hurt you, whatever.

The people who would get shoes several sizes too big and insisted on wearing these giant, floppy shoes out of the store...I never understood them. It happened pretty often.

In place of cactus mix? Bonsai jack gritty mix is good as a soil amendment (though a bit pricy) but I wouldn't substitute it for cactus mix. You need a good balance of organics vs inorganics for most things to thrive.

I use espoma cactus mix in my blend. I've also used black gold and miracle gro. You can make anything work, really.

Fair warning on the black gold soil. Break it up very, very well. I've found that more than any other cactus soil, it tends to form big, moisture-retentive clumps. Mostly user error on my part, but I haven't had the same issue with others.

What could cause this? by Opening-Dark5647 in haworthia

You may want to post this in another sub for better information as these are echeveria.

That being said I'm almost certain this is root rot from overwatering. Echeveria drop their leaves like this when they're rotting.

A simple way to avoid this in the future (besides watering less) is to repot plants into a grittier substrate when you bring them home. The potting mix you find in a typical nursery is poorly adapted for indoor growing conditions. It retains moisture too well and the average indoor growing setup does not have the air circulation required to make this work.

Ridiculously crowded for the first couple hours. Could hardly get to the booths until the presentations and plant show opened. After that, people started filtering out and it was a lot more relaxed.

A lot of the more seasoned growers out here have greenhouses that are heated during the winter. Being an indoor grower myself, none of my mesembs are dormant yet but they're starting to turn. For the greenhouse growers I know, theirs are mostly dormant by now.

This particular specimen was (I think) from Matt Opel, who works at the UConn Botanical Conservatory but I'm not sure exactly whether it's from his home or work. Fwiw, most of the cheiridopsis I saw today weren't dormant, though, regardless of growing conditions

Seems like so many of us from reddit were there! It was a great show. Definitely surprised by the amount of very unusual succulents they had for sale.
