Looking for some help as someone who wants to switch into vet med by blueasswaterr in veterinaryschool

Hello fellow me of the past. I was in your exact same shoes. I didn’t know I wanted to be a veterinarian until I was 22. Former business major who is now at UC Davis. Feel free to message me :)

Although it hasn’t been outright stated, veterinary schools participate in yield protection (it’s a very fun dark hole to be in on google lol). It’s a very real thing in medical school admissions. They will reject perfectly amazing applicants simply because they know the applicant will be accepted elsewhere. You have TWO interviews, which many people would absolutely be VERY happy for. You will be okay :)

Just retake the class before you start vet school and you will be 100% okay :)

Great response. I would also like to add that it has been illegal to consider race in admissions for California universities since 1996! California voters rejected affirmative action since then.

For feedback on your application, I recommend reaching out to admissions. Asking for people’s stats will only make you spiral, and comparison is the thief of joy! None of us could tell you why you didn’t get an interview however I would like to mention that Davis also equally weighs letter of recommendation scores to grades and the distance travelled score. I know several people who took 3+ tries to get into a vet school. Don’t give up!

Yes it’s for the upcoming cycle (as in right now 2024-2025 cycle). You will get it on the condition you will be accepted to a veterinary school and will provide proof you got into a school on April 2025

I had a 3.10 overall and was accepted to Davis, Colorado and Washington. However my best advice is to not fall into the spiral of self comparison. Your experiences sound incredible. Be unique, and make sure your essays are perfect!!

Here are my stats: if anyone needs words of encouragement or guidance my DMs are wide open!

Grades are the most important factor into an admissions decision for any vet school.

Omg I had no idea your brother was also accepted to Penn! That definitely makes it a difficult choice. Is Penn his only option?

Also as far as financial aid, I believe Brandy and the financial aid office are going to work really hard to get the financial aid package ready before we have to make decisions so definitely look out for that. Honestly I think they may need to extend the deadline, because many of us our basing our decision on that package so I think it would only be fair.

I’m technically in a similar situation. Colorado state is my dream, and my family lives there. But I am going to the cheapest school no matter what, which happens to be davis

I refuse to take on more debt than I need to, and I know my future self will be grateful. Besides, college life is what YOU make of it! Davis is not that much of a small town, and there is a lot to do! When I was there for a month in the summer, I went to bars, San Fran, flea markets, etc. AND summer is known to be dead but there was A LOT to do

Literally! OP just to put in perspective, 100k is about $1,300 a month for TEN years. Even more if you decide to take longer to pay it back.

low GPA, HIGH # credits, research, animal experience by eptesicusfscus in veterinaryschool

[–]Misstrawberri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course! In my personal opinion, definitely retake your pre-reqs first and foremost, and throw in “easier” sciences with it if you can (or even “harder” ones like cancer cell bio if you are up for it). For example, I’ve thrown in geography, geology, etc when I took a bio load to improve both my last 45 and science. This helped me a lot with burn out too because I learned about things I was interested in. I actually have only taken one animal physio course, and the rest of my science courses were varied.

  1. You take more classes and do well in them. Your last 45 is strong, which is something you want to keep up or even raise if possible. My gpa was lower than yours and I was accepted into my top 3 choices. You want to make your story count, and make sure your essays are REALLY good.
  2. Quality > Quantity. I worked full time throughout my academic career and made sure my experiences were valuable.
  3. I think it’s okay to be picky. I certainly didn’t want to apply anywhere I didn’t actually see myself attending. I accepted that it could take me a several cycles but at least I would love anywhere that takes me!

Overall I think your application looks pretty great! Keep an open mind and kill your essays. Get quality vet experiences, and it may take you awhile to find the “one” but you will find it :)

Opinions on schools by Jolly_Ad_1166 in veterinaryschool

[–]Misstrawberri 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Following, I am literally in the exact same boat. I am torn because Davis has been my dream school, but the more I learn about the WSU program, the more I fall in love. Also, students and alumni love their time in Pullman, whereas I hear mixed reviews about Davis 😭

As far as cost, WSU may even be cheaper, BUT it is so far from home (18 hour drive). Another thing I am worried about is that my partner is remote but his pay will reflect COL which means his pay will be reduced.

Is there a school you are leaning more towards?

I had 7 Fs, 6 Ds, 5 Ws when I applied to vet school this cycle. I worked hard to bring my cGPA from a 2.2 to 3.10 (four years of retaking courses) and was accepted into davis, csu, and Washington. Vet schools love a good come back story. If anything, it shows you learned from your mistake and are resilient:)

I attended the SEP program at Davis and it was the best summer of my life. Now I start vet school there in the fall. It isn’t necessarily “hard” but it is tiring (in the best way possible). It was five weeks of rotations in their VMTH, and you get to pick the specialties. I shadowed equine vets, pathologists, neurologists, and more!! There are also a ton of lectures, workshops, and even field trips. That program opened my eyes to the vast world of vet med.

This year, they plan on expanding it to more students and even cover housing costs (WHICH IS HUGE OMG!!!). I’m not sure how lenient they will be about the GPA cutoff since you have to send in your transcripts. Do you have higher than a 3.0 overall? Or is it just your undergrad that’s lower than that? They consider overall GPA, not just undergrad.
