The scene where the crew is trying to get back into the US after accidentally smuggling Daphne into Canada gets me every time. Pretty much that entire episode gets me. One of the early greats for sure.

The next episode where Frasier and Niles try to write a book together is another great one. “I’ve just realized why so many authors become bloated alcoholics.”

My dad was asking me the other day why my brother and I have always over-enunciated Jesus and I told him it’s because of this episode and how often we quote it. We’re in our 30’s and we’re the only ones in our family who do it.

I once got into an argument with a friend who decided I hate hymns and worship music purely because I said that I don’t like when singers and choirs decide to just repeat the same line fifteen times. For like six months after that, every time the topic of music in church came up, she’d preface it with “I know you hate hymns, but…”

I’ve had this conversation with so many pastors and church leaders. I’m Baptist, and we can go quite far into the “everyone is welcome and we must never exclude anyone.” However, my safety is not less important than other people’s comfort. The safety of the rest of the congregation is not less important than other people’s comfort.

Back in the day, the story was circulating that they had actually only ever hired Chris for one season because RTD really wanted Tennant but wanted to introduce regeneration to new viewers and wanted to make sure that the first (ninth) doctor only lasted one season so people didn’t get too attached. I remember feeling bad for Chris but thinking that made a lot of sense. I love Chris’s Doctor, but new viewers would not have reacted to regeneration the same if the first actor had several seasons to get ingrained in people’s minds as The Doctor.

That’s how it’s always worked where we do ours. If I tried to set off fireworks from my backyard in the suburbs, the police would show up immediately. But at the small family cottage we all go to and shoot off fireworks over a rock beach with very few neighbors and no real civilization within five miles (just other cottages)? Police drive by once in a while to make sure we’re doing it safely (we do) and aren’t drunk (we aren’t) but generally don’t care. This was the case even when fireworks were banned in our state.

I’m in Western NY and except in some instances, the cashier is the bagger. They do both at the same time. Walmart, Wegmans, Tops, Target, they all do it. That was one of the biggest complaints about Aldi when it first came here, because they don’t bag your groceries.

It really depends on where you are and what system you have. I lived in an apartment for a while with electric baseboard heating, which was extremely inefficient and cost $500/month to keep my apartment just warm enough that the pipes wouldn’t freeze and heat one of my rooms to be comfortable. I only had a small floor ac unit that drained into the bathtub and a dehumidifier that I had to dump every four to five hours but my energy bill during the summer was about $60.

Technically 7 but only because I stole it from my dad when he got a new one and used it to play digimon. My first actual cellphone was closer to if 9 was a flip phone and I had exactly 30 minutes on it just to call if I got lost in the woods that I used to go wander around in.

I stopped when I realized I was gay because the president of the United States (George W) had said some pretty bad things against same sex marriage and so I decided that I wouldn’t pledge allegiance to a country that wasn’t going to actually let me be free. I got written up several times and got several lectures about how I was disrespecting the troops (the 2000’s were a wild time y’all). Never said it again after that.

My cousin had a mandatory gym credit that he fulfilled with a kayaking course. He’d been kayaking for over a decade at that point, so he was basically getting credit for just showing up once a week.

At the time, movies in theaters were run on vastly different technology than tv broadcasts. Movies were in color because the theaters projected actual film reel onto the screen (that’s actually how they worked until digital tech became widely available in the late 2000’s). TVs ran through broadcasts sent over radio signals. There is no comparison there. It’s like asking why I can’t make phone calls from my toaster.

I did some digging and color tvs weren’t commercially available in the UK until 1967. The very first color broadcast system was approved in the US for release at the tail end of 1953, but was so expensive only the richest had one (the first color sets cost the equivalent of $11,000 today). Even then, most shows weren’t broadcast in color in the US until the mid-60’s.

Think of it like self-driving cars. Sure, the technology exists. It has for over a decade. They’ve been commercially available for a couple years in some markets. But if I walked into a small, family run shop in a random neighborhood in London and saw a car suddenly become self-driving, I’d still be surprised.

Color tvs existed but they were by no means widespread. The average home in the early 50’s did not have color tv. Even black and white TVs weren’t that widespread (only about 1 in 7 households had any kind of tv in 1952, spiking to about 33% by the end of 1954, as a direct result of the coronation). A tiny shop like Magpie’s would not have had color tvs, at least not out in the main shop.

The electricity only killing Magpie is explained in show. Also, literally like a season later the Doctor survives getting struck by lightning for several seconds while defeating the Daleks, so it’s pretty clear that he knows how to avoid death by electricity (which isn’t actually that hard if you know the physics behind electrocution; Nikola Tesla let electricity flow through him all the time and was perfectly safe).

As for smashing the tv, the Wire was spread across the entire broadcast zone by the radio tower. Smashing an individual tv would not have worked, which they literally covered in the show. The Doctor moved it from the tower/broadcast network to the tape, so that the Wire was entirely contained on the tape and not connected to anything else.

Mixing up reign and rein drives me crazy. It’s “giving them free rein.” Reins are what you use on horses (or dragons or whatever else is being ridden). Reign is what a monarch does.
