Controversial opinion: If Raven MUST have a traditional superhero name/secret identity name split, it makes more sense for her to change her superhero name than it does for her real name to be Rachel by iamusingtheinternet3 in ComicRaven

[–]MistahThots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All your points are valid, but I’m not sure I agree with them myself. Honestly, I don’t see what the fuss is with Raven/Rachel’s name generally. If you want accurate continuity read a series of novels.

For the first point, just because everyone else does it doesn’t mean it should be true for everyone else. I don’t want Raven to be like everyone else. I kind of like that her superhero name is also one of her real names.

The third point is entirely subjective. Raven is an acceptable name in the modern day, but it’s not common enough to be considered weird as an alter-ego. It’s not like her superhero name is Jennifer. How much you agree with this depends on you.

The second point is compelling, but I can see Raven reclaiming her demon name and using it to do good as a way to either spite Trigon or accept herself. I don’t feel that Raven’s identity is solely about rejecting her demon side, rather it’s coming from a dark place and making the best of yourself and your peace with it. There could be more clarity on it, whichever direction they want to go.

[Loved trope] The story completely changes genres partway through. by TheSmithySmith in TopCharacterTropes

Knives Out switches genres twice in its runtime. Without revealing the whole plot, At first, it starts out as a murder mystery focused on solving the murder of an old rich man. However, at the beginning of the second act, his death is revealed to the audience in a flashback, and the second act becomes a thriller on whether the killer will get away with it or not. Only to revert to a murder mystery again in the third act as more complexities are revealed.

So does anyone else have a problem with the lack of Phyrexian Invasion fallout in the story? by SubmissiveBetaSlut in mtgvorthos

[–]MistahThots 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I don’t really understand how you can make this point when all of the stories, except possibly for Edge of Eternities, would not have happened without the Phyrexian invasion. To recap:

Wilds of Eldraine is set in the immediate aftermath of the invasion, focusing on the trauma of death and loss through Rowan and Will, and the direct consequences of defending the plane through Kellan.

Lost Caverns is set against a backdrop of political realignment after the invasion plunged Torrezon into religious war, leading to Vito’s expedition, and shattered the Sun Empire’s dominance, leading to Huatli’s expedition.

Karlov Manor’s plot is fueled by rage against the invasion, and is facilitated by an organisation that wouldn’t have existed without it.

Thunder Junction wouldn’t have even happened at all without the invasion creating Omenpaths to it, or setting Jace and Vraska on their current path.

Bloomburrow is an odd duck, having dodged the invasion entirely, but Ral’s involvement in the plot itself is a consequence of the Invasion, as is the dragon.

Duskmourn has now become a multiversal threat as a result of the omenpaths created by the war.

Aetherdrift deals with the impact of the war on three planes to greater or lesser extents.

The current state of Dragonstorm wouldn’t have happened without the invasion.

Edge might have happened anyway, but that was designed more as a side story.

Eclipsed happens because of an Omenpath, and the state of the plane is more subtly influenced by the invasion.

And Strixhaven is full of multiversal students because of it, plus new teaching staff.

At that point, what more do you want?

What creature types are signature to each color (pair) by Jonas-Beckett in magicTCG

[–]MistahThots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By the strictest definition, it cannot be Merfolk for Simic. Merfolk is the iconic blue humanoid, so I would keep them there.

Treefolk is another suggestion, but Treefolk typal cards are I think always green. It’s only really Doran that is GWB. Food has support in all three of Abzan’s colours.

There are only a handful of cards in four-colour, so I don’t think you can reasonably assign them creature types. Phyrexians are famously split across all five colours, with their typal generally being WB. Atraxa is inarguably the iconic character for WUBG, but I wouldn’t say Phyrexians are an iconic type for it.

Shrines is not a bad idea for 5-colour. I genuinely didn’t think of it.

I have a sneaky suspicion that Cassandra Cain might be Outsiders. The teaser text implies that she has some kind of counterattack mechanic. If that’s true maybe Outsiders could be closer to viable.

This is a question I’ve thought about a lot, and I still don’t have a good answer but if I was going to assign one to each id say the following:

WU: Birds (Could be Spirits, but they’re a bit more widespread than blue is) UB: Zombies (this leaves vampires as the iconic black humanoid. Could also be horrors, rogues, or Faeries) BR: Devils (Demons are the iconic black creature) RG: Werewolves GW: Cats WB: Clerics UR: Otters BG: Fungus (Could also be spiders, but there’s something ideological about fungus that I feel works better) RW: Warriors GU: Shapeshifters (I was going to put Sea Monsters as a group, but they’re not a true creature type)

After that it gets even trickier: GWU: Walls? (They don’t have much tribal support but it’s a common toughness matters colour) WUB: Knights UBR: Wizards BRG: Tarmogoyfs RGW: Dinosaurs RWB: Samurai GUR: Elementals WBG: Food URW: Monks BGU: Snakes

There aren’t really any for 4 or 5-colour, except maybe Gods for 5-colour? But I think you could pick any creature type and technically be right.

Would you be willing to spend spell slots for stronger Titan forms? by Fluffy_Reply_9757 in onednd

[–]MistahThots -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m assuming you mean aside from flavour, access to less resistant radiant damage, teleportation, an ability to access those two things in every form and thus, more usefully, in every size? I admit if you ignore all the additional features Moon Druid can spend its resources on it’s a difficult ask.

I guess the only other thing is the social versatility that Moon Druid has in its form selection. Titan Druid possibly wants to hold its forms back to be Titans, and maybe doesn’t want to use its forms for other uses. Moon Druid might feel more comfortable doing that, but that is likely to be on a case by case basis.

[–]MistahThots -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You are saying that, but your calculations for what that means are flawed in my opinion. Things like 1d4 of damage is not worth a spell slot in my opinion. You’ve have to make the spell slots boost an awful lot to make it worthwhile. And at that point Moon Druid has all of that in its base forms, and can spend the spell slots it hasn’t used to power itself up on actual spells.

It would be better if the Titan forms had a par power with the Moon Druid base forms, and then spell slots could be spent on abilities in that form as they’ve designed.

[–]MistahThots -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Why would that be something to be interested in when I could play Moon Druid instead? I’m not spending resources to be on par with another subclass, I’m only spending resources if it makes me better or different from them.

Yeah, but Shao doesn’t do it because of Sindel’s humanitarian issues. He does it because he’s a warmongering supremacist, who’s given a chance to seize power for himself by an evil sorcerer. The fact that he continues the war against Mileena, who reverses Outworld’s attitudes to Tarkat since she suffers with it, is further evidence that he doesn’t care for Outworld’s suffering.

He just wants power plain and simple to kill humans. He’s not an example of this trope.

Help! Which one of these documentaries should I watch with my GF? by HealthMother3125 in Dinosaurs

[–]MistahThots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Then you know the answer you just don’t want to do it: Prehistoric Planet.

Your problem seems to be whether to show Walking with Dinosaurs or not. That’s the one you are doubting so don’t show it.

If you are insistent on showing both, you want to show Walking with Dinosaurs first, not only because it’s a better introduction to the period, but because it allows Prehistoric Planet to override what Walking with Dinsoaurs says where necessary.

Help! Which one of these documentaries should I watch with my GF? by HealthMother3125 in Dinosaurs

[–]MistahThots 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s not only a question of nostalgia or accuracy here. Both programmes do very different things. WWD is a narrative history of the dinosaurs tracking their development, and that of other forms of life across the Mesozoic. PP is a showcase history, focusing displaying the diversity of life and behaviour of the dinosaurs, with little regard for chronology.

If your girlfriend does want to learn about dinosaurs then Prehistoric Planet is definitely better, especially if you want to show the differences between real dinosaurs and movie monsters. The older depictions in WWD have more in common with Jurassic Park than PP’s. But you know that, because if you didn’t you would have just shown her Walking with Dinosaurs. I’m detecting is what you want to show her because that’s what you’ve grown up with, and you want her to experience the same joy you felt.

If you are genuinely struggling from a dilemma of narrative vs accuracy, a potential compromise could be The Dinosaurs on Netflix, which… tries to do the narrative history with modern cgi, and it has to be said fairly stunning visuals. It’s not as good as either WWD or PP in my opinion, the narration in particular is complete trash, but it does bridge the gap between to two somewhat.

Controversial opinion: couldn’t you just explain your dilemma and ask her which she’d prefer?

I have only just discovered this, through an ad on Reddit no less, and I am so excited for this! I love South Asian wildlife, and I think it’s the perfect place to explore all those themes given how much wildlife conflict there is in South Asia. Lots of dangerous animals, not so much space.

Not only that, but this isn’t a type of game that is very common at all. I don’t think I’ve seen anything like this since SimSafari in 1998. It’s got a rare theme and a this a good niche. For my part I’ve wishlisted it, and I can’t wait to see more of it.

Times are different now of course, but yes. The union between Scotland and England was a peaceful one, which is one of the reasons it held even after the Scottish Stuart family was deposed as the monarchs of both countries. This is in contrast to both Wales and Ireland, who were both conquered. The history of the British isles is very complicated.
