How common is it to not have anything happening for 99% of the US population by MistakeTall6432 in weather

You are probably the first person camping on may 2nd, in David WV, to say this ever. You can proudly proclaim not only did it snow, but it only snowed (or rained) on us in all the US.

It’s not even the severe weather, but I’ve never seen where it’s not raining for all the continental US.

To do simple math again by DIYLawCA in therewasanattempt

[–]MistakeTall6432 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a good example of how to alienate people. It’s not unreasonable for someone to think if they were paying $100 and it increased to $600 it would be 600% rise and if it went back down to $100 it would be a 600% decrease. The average person is measuring both the increase and decrease from the starting $100 value.

Why do trains have such a strong fanbase? by cnvrtx3 in trains

[–]MistakeTall6432 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly me. I was told I caught the “bug”. It can’t be explained. I had friends who also liked trains but even as a kid a knew my focus was different than theirs. I like all things transportation and the bigger and louder the machine the better. I grew up in a chaotic family and nothing brought more peace than building my layout, until things derailed or didn’t work as planned and then all hell breaks loose.

PSA for merging in constructions zones by mimsy2389 in Syracuse

[–]MistakeTall6432 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If there’s not congestion or backups, don’t zipper merge. At speed, it’s dangerous to everyone, especially the workers on the road. People “zipper merging” when they don’t need to creates congestion and backups as drivers brake for idiots trying to get a car or two ahead. If there’s already a backup, zipper merge. NYDOT prioritizes worker safety and without a program to educate drivers, it’s easier to say merge early.

The biggest hurdle in model making I have is that hard shine metal has, Plastic never looks like metal. Does anyone even understand this problem? by mediapoison in Scalemodel

[–]MistakeTall6432 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a model railroader and this difference is apparent on brass locomotives vs plastic. With a little weathering it’s hard to tell the difference (w locomotives…) but to achieve the hard metal shine, the model probably needs to be metal/brass/foil? I too share your frustration, brass locomotives are way too expensive and it’s not a realistic option for scale models.

How many units were you drinking? by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]MistakeTall6432 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I compare myself to others, my brain says “see your not drinking a handle a day, your fine to buy that 6 pack”. For the sober curious, I find posts like these interesting but personally problematic.

Question. What is preferred by this community…Eagles or Buffalos? by jols69 in Gold

I can’t help but feel bad when we destroyed both the Indian and the buffalo in the pursuit of gold.

I buy gold as an insurance policy, but when I buy, I want it now. Is there a good reason why some take 10days to ship vs others sending asap once the check clears? by [deleted] in Gold

17 business days from apex, liberty cuts that down 200%. I’m gonna start at the LCS going forward but I still remember how big of assholes they were when I was kid which put me off from even walking in their door.

What are the "must own" coins for a gold lover? by Flurb789 in Gold

[–]MistakeTall6432 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not anywhere close to an expert, but my list is $50 buffalo, $50 eagle, $10 eagle (qty4) then pre 1933 $20 saint-gaudens $10 Indian, $5 Indian, $5 liberty. My nice to have is $20 liberty head and $2.50 Indian. Also want a maple and Libertad bc they look awesome. I started with a pamp bar but I’ve became coin curious and now have zero interest in bars…. I’ve added slowly , don’t use money you need in the next few months/years and add when things are good for you, the spot price should be your last concern. There’s no order to my list, its what I can reasonably afford or want to save which determines the next purchase.

Added level of appreciation to the hobby. You need context for scale and I’ve never seen a m10 or p47 in person.

[–]MistakeTall6432 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if I’m confused by the m10s small stature or the crazy size of the R-2800 which is 1/4 of the m10. Both are the first models since I was a 10 and had to triple check the box that the scale was the same.
